Having seen some recommendations, and following a fair bit of research in the search for a budget gravel bike after having been purely a “roadie” for the last decade and a bit, I took a punt and went for a Saracen Levarg. Saracen have been making decent MTBs since the 1990s, so should know what’s what.
Spec-wise, I couldn’t find anything better (new) for the price – full 2×10 Shimano GRX chain set and derailleurs with Tiagra shifters for £750 (reduced currently from £1300). It’s got 650b wheels with 47mm tyres on, which I found super comfy.
They do an “SL” with hyrdo brakes for just over £1k after delivery, but I couldn’t justify the extra cost at the moment. Mine came with the TRP Spyre mechanical brakes which are at least dual piston and seem fine so far, even if they do need a bit of a shove to generate maximum retardation. I rarely hammer the brakes in general riding anyhow.
First ride this morning – absolutely love it, the bike is great. Stable and composed over the rougher stuff, but felt fun and lively to steer too. Very confidence inspiring. Apparently there’s some MTB inspired geometry with a longer top tube and shorter stem involved.
Also, what a revelation it is riding off road. There’s so many bridleways and tracks within 10-20 mins ride from home that I never even knew existed. No traffic, just quiet countryside and birds of prey looking for their breakfasts.
