The Lucania Parks Loop is a spectacular bike ride entirely within the Basilicata region.
It starts and ends in Maratea after approximately 800 km and a total elevation gain of 14,000 meters. The route crosses the Pollino National Park, which is the largest natural park in Italy and extends between Basilicata and Calabria; the Gallipoli Cognato Regional Park and Piccole Dolomiti Lucane, known for its spectacular rock formations and the village of Pietrapertosa; the Lucanian Apennines Val d’Agri Lagonegrese National Park; and the Murgia Materana Park. The loop winds along secondary roads that are almost deserted, partly because Basilicata is one of the least populated regions in Italy.
A visit to Matera with its famous Sassi is obviously a must, and I would recommend dedicating a whole day to visiting it.

For those interested in the itinerary, I have attached the GPX file for download below.
