I had the pleasure of riding the Robbers Roost Overnighter route from Bikepacking.com a couple weekends ago. It was absolutely perfect. This is only my second trip but I feel so at home while bikepacking. The weather was great and the trails were so fun. There were some grueling climbs but even those are fun when you have incredible views around you. I ride a fully rigid Surly Ogre. There were a few sections (mainly the descent from where the cave is) that I could’ve used a suspension on but at this point I’m pretty used to feeling every bump. I had a blast and learned a lot. Got to test out some new gear. I got an REI Magma 30 to replace my Teton Leaf, which was a huge upgrade. Packs down much tighter. And I replaced my Snugpak Stratosphere with a Durston X-mid 1. Regrettably, I didn’t get any pictures of my tent set up as it was getting dark and I was ready to crash for the night. But it was so much more comfortable than the bivvy and made my trip much better than the last. Very happy with that upgrade.
Anyway, if you get the chance to do this route I highly recommend it. Most of it is rideable with a bit of hike a bike. There’s one steep section in Diamondback Gulch that was a little sketchy for me and there’s one section with some mild exposure towards the end of the route. Other than that, it’s fairly tame with the occasional tech here and there. I absolutely loved it! I’m sure this won’t be the last time doing this route for me.
