Last night, we slept deeply and woke to the most glorious sunrise. We walked into Coulon, as the colours intensified and watched a hot air balloon take off, across the river.

Our plan had been to find breakfast, but nowhere was open, so we wandered back to the site, packed the tent off and headed off, on the next leg of the ride to Rochefort, aiming to stop for breakfast on the way.

To cut a long story and a few detours short, we didn’t find an open café, bar or boulangerie. The Charente Maritime villages were closed for business.

It wasn’t our favourite day on the bikes, but more on that in the blog later. However we have been bowled over by Rochefort, which is unexpectedly beautiful with a very gentle feel.
