There was major drama as Redcar beat Scunthorpe in the second tier of British Speedway, with two riders involved in a heated brawl. Redcar captain Charles Wright and Scunthorpe’s Jake Allen clashed after heat six.
After an incident during the heat, the two riders exchanged words before Allen approached Wright and dragged him off his bike. The pair then went at it before being separated and they eventually patched things up.
“There’s drama here,” one of the commentators said of the clash. “The two of them are really going at it. There’s drama on the track and Charles Wright and Jake Allen are taking matters into their own hands here at the ECCO Arena. They’re trying to be separated by the start marshall.”
The second commentator added: “We love to see it! I would not get involved in that and Charles Wright is going back in for it again. There’s going to be fights left right and centre.”
And after Wright and Allen settled their differences, he added: “There you go, I told you they’d shake hands. It was good fun and I really enjoyed that sort of UFC-style rolling about on the floor.”
Wright ultimately had the last laugh after Redcar took one step closer to qualifying for the play-offs with a 55-35 victory over Scunthorpe. “We thought it would be tough because Scunthorpe are always a good side around our track, so I told the boys not to take them for granted,” Redcar manager Gavin Parr said.
“But right from Heat 1 we were on the front foot the whole time, and it was a really pleasing night. Ace [Pijper] needs special praise, he’s been up and down a little bit, but he’s got a new motor in and the confidence is just seeping from them all, so it should be good for the rest of the season.”
The results leaves Redcar third in the table, while Scunthorpe are bottom. “It’s been the way of our season,” Scunthorpe boss David Howe admitted.
