Day 5 of pedalling on our trip down through France, and we’re now in the Marais Poitevin…

Yesterday, we spent the day exploring the stunning Ile de Noirmoutier, with our friends. It was a stunning place, with golden beaches, warm turquoise sea and teeming with wildlife. We spotted an Otter, as well as some Sacred Ibis..
.
Then after another lovely evening, we hugged Jo & Peter goodbye and set out across the salt marshes on our way inland & towards the Marais Poitevin.

It was a beautiful morning and the peace was only interrupted by the gentle plops of coypu slipping into the water, and birdsong.
.
We’ve pedalled just over 100km today, along peace fil roads, leaving the flat open area of the Vendée coast behind and cycling into the rolling landscape of the hinterland, spotting our first vineyards too.

Tonight, we’re at Mareuil-Sur-Lay-Dissais and got the tent up in record time. We’ll have some supper and plan a new route to get us to Angoulême, the long way round, as we seem to be riding so much further each day than we thought we would.

And on roads & through countryside like this, why would we want to take the short route?
