Check out this video by Shifter on Edmonton.
Edmonton is investing $100 million on bike infrastructure over the next 4 years to encourage more active transportation and give people more opportunities to choose this option. What are the potential returns of this investment? A healthier city: better air quality, reduced noise pollution, environmentally friendly in terms of carbon emissions and wild life habitats, better for local businesses (cyclists are more likely to visit stores that they bike by then car drivers), more active citizens, etc etc.
$100 million sounds like a lot of money but it is small in comparison to the cost of road infrastructure/maintenance. This is a city that is the capital of Alberta – a province in Canada known for its truck drivers and conservative provincial government. But having the right city councillors and the right mayor is what makes it possible. Talk to your city representatives. Encourage people in your community. And keep cycling! Even if you feel that your impact is minuscule, you are part of growth of the cycling culture!
Edmonton is not perfect, but it sure is making the right step.
