The Mugel lies at the northern end of the Gleinalpe or Hochalpe mountain range. To the east, it is separated from the slightly higher Roßeck (1664 m) only by the flat Wapplersattel (1540 m). To the west and north, the Mugel slopes down in two elongated ridges to the city of Leoben and the market town of Niklasdorf, respectively. The gully between these ridges is called the Brandgraben. From the Niklasdorfgraben, further east, a private road leads to the transmitter station and further to the Mugelschutzhaus (Mugel Protection House). The southern side of the Mugel is steeper; here the mountain drops directly, largely without a path, into the Kleiner Gößgraben .
