At 15 km/h through Europe Day 43 Wednesday, June 27, 2018 France On the Eurovelo 6 cycle route 1,350 kilometers of cycle path and 26 days in the saddle are behind me. Today I’m taking a break from my beloved bike. I’m having breakfast on the terrace. An hour and a half later It’s time to keep my promise to Alexander, the manager of this campsite. We agreed that I would take aerial photographs and in return a voluntary donation would go to the therapy farm in Leobersdorf. On the way to reception, I spot the tent and bicycles of the two cyclists from France I met a few days ago. After a crash course in drone control, I hand Alexander the controller and take cover. As if he’d never done anything else, he hoists the aircraft to dizzying heights and accelerates it so fast that sweat pours from my forehead like a waterfall. Later, these shots will present cheerful images on the front page of the company’s website . After the photos, on the way to the tent, I actually meet a nice couple from Austria! I’m really happy about that. On the one hand, they’re great, friendly people to talk to , and on the other hand, they’re contributing to the development of the therapy farm with a donation. And when I think about it, I ‘ve only had two other encounters with Austrians in the last few weeks in France. 11:00 a.m. In full travel gear and with a fully loaded bike and trailer, I wait for the photographer. Two hours later, the photo shoot didn’t take place. In comfortable summer clothes, carrying my dirty laundry in a bag, I set out to find a laundromat. Hey Gerhard! Don’t bother yourself so much and take the tram! I ignore my inner demons and continue my walk. With the help of Google Maps and a few passersby, I find a youth hostel that has washing machines. At the entrance, a friendly man explains to me in clear English that a wash cycle takes 30 minutes and costs €3.50. The detergent is included in the price. At the same time, he sells me the coins to operate the machine. At the coffee machine, the language barriers become apparent again. Only the cappuccino seems familiar. A quarter-liter cup costs 50 cents. So, the decision is made. 3:00 p.m. Oops! Near the youth hostel where I used the washing machine, there’s a laundromat. I love my goddess of fate. First, she makes me search with great effort, only to then offer me two, just a few meters apart . How lucky that my wife Elisabeth isn’t here! You know, Gerhard, in 2018, approximately 104,000 people live in Mulhouse. And Mulhouse was first mentioned in a document in 803. The industrial city is called Mulhouse in German and lies in the border triangle of France, Germany, and Switzerland. Here, French is the official language, and German is the regional language. Curious, I stroll through the city and am amazed at how many people are milling around. I withdraw cash from an ATM and later buy a ticket for the tram. The inviting bistros, the cozy café terraces , and the ice cream parlors in the pedestrian zone delight me. With two bags, one containing groceries and the other freshly washed clothes, I take the tram to the campsite. While eating dinner, I realize that I could already be in Switzerland by late afternoon tomorrow .
