Depuis ses débuts en 2011, Shay (ou Vanessa Lesnicki à la ville) s’est imposée comme l’une des rappeuses francophones les plus talentueuses de sa génération. Basée à Bruxelles, elle dévoile en 2016 son premier album, “Jolie Garce”, aujourd’hui certifié disque d’or. “Antidote”, son deuxième album, est lui certifié platine. En 2024, elle revient avec “Pourvu qu’il pleuve”, un troisième album conçu sous son propre label, Jolie Garce Records. Alors qu’elle présente à Vogue France les secrets que contient son sac, de ses lunettes de soleil à son durag, elle en profite pour évoquer le manque de femmes dans l’industrie du rap, autant sur le devant de la scène que dans les coulisses des maisons de disques.

When you do
Vogue’s “In The Bag”… I’ve watched them all.
I’m a fan of the concept. I think the bags are well organized, but in real life, it’s more like this. Hi Vogue, it’s Shay, and today I’m going to show you
what’s in my bag. I’ve had a bag for like…
barely two years. I’ve always been the girl
who has everything in her pockets. I’m trying to get organized. It’s an Acne bag
that I think is very nice. It matched my outfit. I’m Congolese, I like to
combine and match everything. First of all, I have this book:
The Book of Five Rings. It’s a book I’ve been carrying around
with me for maybe five years now. I want to be that woman
who reads while she waits, but I don’t have time to read. And, I get lots of book recommendations
and if I like the stories and all, I buy them,
but they just stays in my bag. A durag, for my hair. It’s mainly used to protect afro hair. It’s handy, like when my hair’s
messed up or when I’m sleeping. I always carry it with me. Sunglasses, very important. I usually wear much bigger ones,
to hide my whole face. But even that does the trick. When you’re not completely dressed. I’m totally the kind of person
you can run into at night with sunglasses on. I can’t see a thing,
but I wear them, it’s cool. My card holder
with my cards in it. I’m not a spendthrift. I’m not the kind of person
who goes shopping on a whim. But I do travel a lot. I never pack a suitcase,
so when I get somewhere, I usually buy everything,
toothbrush, hair comb. I’m a difficult person. It’s supposed to be a card holder,
but I’ve put a hard drive in it. It’s super important
in music to have a hard drive because when you do sessions… I keep every tracks.
I’m very paranoid. On that hard drive,
there are very old tracks, there are new ones,
some that will never be released. Stans must never grab that,
if they do, I’m finished. I’m going to change my bag
and my hard drive, I don’t want them
to catch me with that. The Virgin Mary! It’s a gift from my director,
who’s also my best friend. He gave it to me because he said
I needed to calm down. I’m a super nervous person
in everyday life, and he thought it would help me. I’m still not calm,
but maybe one day, who knows. A pen… But a special one,
it’s a laser too. I really like lasers. I love pointing at someone
when I’m talking. I’m super rude. My car keys, very important I love driving. A lot of times people
want to send me cabs or have drivers drive me around,
but I like to take myself somewhere. And I’m the kind of passenger
who criticizes how you drive. My first car
was given to me by my father. It was a very old Mercedes. It was so stylish. One day while I was driving it,
the exhaust fell off. It really didn’t end well. Earphones.
I lose them all the time. I think this must be
the 20th ones I buy. I used to buy
the more expensive ones. But I kept losing them
over and over. Now I’ve forbidden myself
to buy them. Wait, are they in there? Here they are. They’re here, but I’m so afraid
of losing them, I don’t wear them anymore. I have my passport and a notebook. My passport because I travel a lot,
and a notebook because I write. I like to write in it
rather than on the phone. I like to write during the night,
late, around 1 am, 2 am, 3 am. I can never lose that,
it’s full of secrets. I have my phones. My first phone,
which I use mostly for work. And I have a second phone. My boyfriend doesn’t know
about this phone. It’s okay, we won’t tell him. He doesn’t watch Vogue.
He thinks it’s a girl thing. Well, he’s wrong. I’m on the phone all the time. I like to call my best friend. But he hates me because
sometimes I call him, he picks up, and I put the phone down
and don’t say anything, I go on with my life.
But I want him to be there. If he hangs up, it’s war,
so, that’s it. What’s left in there? There’s a bag in the bag. Because it’s cool. Back then,
I could have used this as a bag. I think I’m super responsible now. When I come here, I’m proud of myself. I’m like:
“Yes, we’re really doing stuff here.” And here I…
I just lost a nail. My nail stylist,
you’re fired, it’s over. But it’s okay
it’s just the vagaries of life. And in this little bag,
I’ve only got red lipsticks and brown lip pencils. That’s all I use for make-up. Arnica Montana,
because I do a lot of Thai boxing, so I usually get
a lot of bruises on my legs, and I was advised to take this. I don’t know if it was good advice,
but I’ve bought some. It’s a sport that attracted me
because it’s a sport that requires a lot of strength,
that lets your rage out. It taught me a lot about myself. And a perfume. I love the shape, it’s so beautiful. Courrèges, Hyper Cuir. With a false eyelash,
because it’s in the bag. I’m someone who changes perfumes a lot,
and especially mixes them. I feel special when I mix them. I feel like a bit of a scientist. In general,
everyone thinks I smell good. And the last thing. There’s some jewelry here. That’s a pendant. Jolie Garce records. Very important. It’s my label,
I do music under this label and my ambition
is to produce other artists. Today, it’s hard
to develop female rappers and female urban artists, because
labels are 98% composed of males. When you have to release a track, make
choices, or have artistic discussions, you’re here with people
who don’t even understand what you’re saying most of the time. That’s why I’m keeping this label. This is a ring a suitor
gave me as a gift. But I didn’t end up with him,
I wasn’t interested. There you go Vogue,
you know everything that’s in my bag. I hope you enjoyed it.
I had a wonderful time. I really like this exercise. I think I’m going to stop
releasing albums. I’m going to become a youtuber. “- Who agrees says yeah!
