Cycling the mountains of the Pyrenees

The long awaited cycling trip to the Pyrenees finally arrived. We decided to do some cycling on our road bikes in in the mountains rather than a bike tour in Belgium in the hope of better weather. It would be my first time cycling in mainland Europe and boy what a difference to the UK!

it’s the first day of vacation and so we fly out to France tonight and I’m about to learn how to pack one of these there’s a video so I’m gonna watch that first going pretty well so far but the wheels in which is pretty easy they just slot in there and they screw in place quite nicely seat post is there so yes the bike I’m having the bike room shut up I’ve ever shown you here is the bike it’s a room full of bikes basically yeah my bike next work on getting the handlebars off so I can tuck them down in and then I think we’re ready to put it in the box it’s pretty straightforward getting it in I felt crowing it down everything’s in there I’ve got my shoes filled with food some snacks and things helmet some protein in my water bottles the tools everything sort of tucked away in there very nicely it was just a matter of packing my suitcase and everything off to the airport taxi comes at 5:00 so nathan has to do this but I’ll let him do that so we can do anyway he’ll be home soon so I’ll show you how you gets on great Nathan’s box is in a nascent bike Nathan’s bike is in my box is in my bike yes how did you find was it hurt no pretty good easier in the cardboard box in one day we meet in our own boxes we go yep we are liking the books so yeah well ready to go so right he throw our latest delayed not too much 40 minutes over having allegedly dinner at Wagga mothers with this view from doing some good food and then hopefully if you have any questions either for the cabin crew thank you [Music] so after a delayed fight we have arrived but we arrived last night got to bed about 3:00 a.m. so yeah only about five hours sleep but the bikes are back together and we’re about to go for a ride however the weather decided it’s the amazing view from our room so yeah we’re going out in the rain anyway you’re going for a flat ride 74 okay and I only get to try out the theory that weather guv cuffs will stop the rain from going into my bootys so I’ve got my rain covers which usually give me about 40 minutes in the rain however if this theory about the rubber glove cops is true I will keep my feet dry the whole ride and Nathan’s got his new rain jacket so he’s ready and he’s got fellow toes to keep his feet dry so yeah [Music] when you need the feed so we saw some of those guys so we’re writing [Music] it’s day 2 we see Sun so we’re making a run for it well the goings good so it’s quite changeable the weather and yes right now their Sun it supposed to rain later so we’re gonna go to Spain hopefully it’s sunny here in Spain for me [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] how do you feel about your first cold we’re going down it now amazingamazing so we’re doing a section from the Tour de France last year yeah they’re actually defending now we didn’t record at the top oops it’s very very nice roads very beautiful views as you’ve seen and yeah we’re just getting to the bottom in a bunch in Spain [Music] [Music] so I thought I’d talk you through my thoughts on the coal deport alone this is us going up the Spanish side and the Spanish side had better surfacing than the French side you can see its new pavement lovely drainage pupper ditches the first slide wasn’t bad though so don’t get me wrong on that and if we really enjoyed we had slightly better weather on the Spanish side as you can see and the views on the Spanish side are slightly better you’re about to see Nathan filming me coming around to switch back and he’s very supportive as always keeping guy if you want it to you yes okay nice the other great thing on the Spanish side which was a great help was the information boards every kilometer along the way telling you what to expect for the next kilometer what gradient which is great help and here Nathan’s going to capture me again at the top of the cult double-double summit if you missed it my answer was tired so we’re coming down the French side now and if you compare the two sides of the call the French light is harder for both going up and down the Spanish side is a more consistent it’s you know six point eight or six point six going up on average just over eight K the French side if you ignore the first two K and just look at the last eight K it’s an average of eight point four and there are sections that spike up to 14% they stay there for you know a good hundred meters so it’s harder on the front side cuz you don’t get that consistency of grade and you do have spikes so it makes it more challenging both coming up and down as you can see the switchbacks are there more severe there’s less straight stretches as well on the French side so where we’re staying Jeff and Victoria we know how to look after cyclists when we come back and find cookies and cake Nathan’s warming up is our D and because they’re British it’s property so they will get you

  1. Great to hear the poor weather didn't dampen your spirit or your enjoyment of the riding here. You'll have to come back again when it's dry, sunny and warm …. er, like next week! 😉

  2. That was a super ride! It looks like you had lunch in Bossòst. They have a video about themselves that lasts more than an hour. 🙂 That was a huge piece of cheese and an interesting way of getting the meat. Very cool.
