Welcome to another early morning mountain bike ride through Gozo’s wild and historic west coast.

This off-road ride begins at Tal-Wardija, just as the sun rises, casting golden light on the rocky terrain, dried shrubs, and sea views to my left. The weather was perfect — calm, clear skies and warm morning light added a magical touch to today’s trail.

At 00:58, we reach the legendary Ras il-Wardija, an elevated headland that once housed a Punic-Roman sanctuary. Its isolated coastal location made it a strategic lookout and beacon for ancient mariners navigating between Gozo, Malta, and North Africa. The site, first excavated in the 1960s, contains remains that hint at religious and maritime importance — a link between the island’s ancient past and its present-day natural beauty.

From there, it’s full-on off-road riding. The paths are technical and narrow, and maintaining balance is key. We follow the coastline, slowly descending while the view to the left opens up to some of Gozo’s most dramatic cliffs.

The highlight comes at 02:34, where we ride with the iconic Fungus Rock (Ġebla tal-Ġeneral) in the background. This imposing limestone islet rises 60 meters above the sea and is steeped in Knights-era history. Believed to host a rare medicinal plant (Cynomorium coccineum), the Knights of St. John so valued it that they heavily guarded the rock, using it as a botanical stronghold.

From 02:44, enjoy a 47-second uncut clip of technical riding — rugged terrain, rocks, and steep drops with the stunning sea views behind me.

At 03:32, we reach the best vantage point for viewing Fungus Rock, where I pause, take it all in, and share a quiet moment from the trail.

The ride continues past Dwejra’s rugged coastal cliffs, ending a few minutes later with a calm cruise and a reminder of just how scenic and challenging Gozo’s coastlines can be for mountain biking.

Whether you’re here for the history, the views, or the thrill of off-road cycling, I hope this video gives you a small taste of what it’s like to explore Gozo on two wheels.

  1. I know when the title says 'technical trail' there are going to be some hairy scenes….not disappointed with the whole first 1:00 min…then it culminates at 2:25 where you leave the path and decide to go left off main path and cross-over a knocked down rubble wall and navigate through a treacherous path of baseball-sized stones😵…..it really doesn't get any better than the technically challenging trail coupled with the backdrop beauty of the sea as you ride around Fugus Rock illuminated in morning glow….that clip is a Gozo MTB gem 3:003:30….well deserved rest at FR viewpoint….Bravo and well done!…I will enjoy this from my computer screen….although thinking about it, hiking these trails would be fun🤔….maybe one day…..
