While cycling from Maidstone to Dover in the middle of a UK heatwave, I stopped to film a quick moment — and that’s when a kid pointed straight at me and asked his mum, “What is that man doing??” 😂 Moments like this are what make bikepacking so memorable.
This ride was part of my bigger journey along the Velo Route, heading towards France and eventually further into Europe. I had my panniers fully loaded, a bottle of water always within reach, and more suncream than I thought I’d ever need. The UK coastline heading into Dover was absolutely worth the effort, with the sea breeze finally cutting through the heat as I got closer to the port.
For anyone planning a long-distance cycle, here’s the truth: it’s not all perfect views and smooth roads. There’s sweat, tired legs, and the occasional public comment that makes you laugh for miles afterwards. That’s the joy of travel — you never know what’s coming next.
If you’ve been thinking about starting your own cycling adventure, whether it’s a weekend trip or a months-long journey across countries, I can tell you it’s worth every turn of the pedals. And if you missed yesterday’s video, go back and watch it — it sets the stage for this part of the ride.
