emergency measures have been put in place to save the blast furnace at Scunthor from closing but why is the government racing to keep the plant open british Steel’s owners Jingier had plans to stop all operations but it’s difficult and costly to stop and then restart a furnace it’s a process that involves draining molten material by drilling a hole in the structure so how does a furnace work well raw iron ore dug from the ground is dropped into the furnace at the top along with a processed coal called coke that’s the fuel it heats the iron so it melts but it also starts a chemical reaction to remove oxygen from the ore and produce almost pure iron the byproduct is the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide the molten iron is then pulled out down here at the bottom and processed further to make steel the furnaces at Skunthorp are running low on both coing coal and iron ororn pellets without a fresh supply the furnaces would have to be switched off in the next fortnight

What a farce the UK has become. They shut the bladt furnaces at port Talbot and the its a race to keep Scunthorpe open. Sadly if we ever go to war well be gone in a matter of days.
can the uk afford coal for tomorrow?
Sick to fooooking death of hearing itt.!!🥊. Bad management another bail out.. !!😮. It’s a joke.. left to simple man(tax payer) to carry.!! Sack the board.!!👍. Piss take

They just need to open the mines in Cumbria. Yip that’s in the uk!!!!!
Why the rush to keep Scunthorpe (I think it should be saved if possible), but Port Talbot, a superior and more diverse site was left to close?
What would my left foot say?.
Buy Tesla use electric
Not a single report by skynews or others include this governments big push for net zero which has caused higher cost. Don't blame Trump and hide what this disastrous government has done.
Livin, in a starmerterial world
Seeing as when Trump put the Tarriffs for imported steel from U.K. the government said they would supply the coal needed to subsidise the industry. Since then Trump has dropped the Tarriffs days ago on the U.K. so what is this mean only posted only five hours ago?
Too little too late for Teesside 🥲
Why are we waiting on coal ,why dont we use our own or is that to much common sense!
The question should be: Who sold British Steel to the Chinese in the first place? Greybull Capital. Surely they made a fortune from the sale, I say seize their assets and use it to deliver on promises made. They have made fortunes profiting from others loss. the global crisis on 2007-2008, they bought up loads of firms for nothing and sold them on at profit. They should be held to account for the loss of another british industry.
They can’t afford the cost of power to keep it going.
Couldn’t the steel be preorder by the government for new Warships
Brexit going well then 🙄
