Welcome to Parede, a charming coastal town between Lisbon and
Cascais. In this walking tour, we’ll explore quiet neighborhoods, historic streets, and end with a sunset over the Atlantic. Let’s begin our journey through this
scenic seaside gem. We begin at Estação Parede — the town’s train station, opened in 1889. This station played a vital role in
transforming Parede from a fishing village into a sought-after summer retreat. Its elegant architecture reflects early
20th-century styles typical of Portugal’s railway heritage. Rua Capitão Leitão is a quiet residential
street named after a naval officer. This part of Parede showcases the blend of
villas, low-rise buildings, and local shops that give the town its
peaceful rhythm. This second entrance to Estação Parede
offers access from the town center. The station lies on the Linha de Cascais — one of Portugal’s oldest electrified rail
lines, known for its scenic coastal views. Rua das Clementinas leads through a
charming neighborhood of traditional Portuguese houses, often painted in bright pastels. Look for azulejo tiles, iron balconies, and gardens blooming with bougainvillea. Praça 5 de Outubro is a small civic square
named after the 1910 Republican revolution. These squares often serve as community
anchors, offering shade, benches, and places to pause in daily life. Avenida da República is one of Parede’s
main arteries. Lined with cafés, banks, and bakeries, this thoroughfare reflects the town’s
daily rhythms. Keep an eye out for Art Deco and
mid-century modern façades. Rua José Relvas is named after one of the
founders of the Portuguese Republic. This side street connects central Parede
with quieter neighborhoods and provides a glimpse into local residential life. Mercado da Parede is the town’s
traditional market, where locals buy fresh fish, fruits, flowers, and handmade goods. Markets like this are central to
Portuguese life — a place of commerce, gossip, and community ties. Rua José Elias Garcia leads you past shops
and historic buildings. Elias Garcia was a 19th-century liberal
politician and advocate for civic education — fitting for a civic spine like this
street. Avenida Amadeu Duarte passes by elegant
villas and newer developments. It transitions from central Parede toward
residential zones closer to the cliffs. Notice how the architecture blends
post-war simplicity with coastal charm. Igreja Paroquial da Parede is the town’s
main parish church. Built in the early 20th century, it features clean neoclassical lines and
beautiful stained glass windows. The church often hosts music events and is
a cultural as well as religious center. Rua Gomes Freire de Andrade is a narrow
connector street, named after a general from Portugal’s
Liberal Wars. It offers quiet passage between busier
parts of town. Rua Vasco da Gama pays tribute to the
famed explorer who opened the sea route to India. The street is a modest nod to Portugal’s
age of global exploration. Rua Luanda is named after Angola’s capital
— a reminder of Portugal’s colonial history. Today, it’s a quiet, tree-lined street that leads toward the
coastal highway. Avenida Marginal, or N6, is the stunning oceanfront highway
connecting Lisbon and Cascais. Driving, cycling, or walking here reveals breathtaking views
of the Atlantic. It’s one of Portugal’s most scenic urban
coastlines. Praia da Parede is a small but beloved
beach known for its therapeutic rock formations and calm tide pools. Historically praised for its iodine-rich
waters, it attracted visitors seeking natural
remedies. Today, it remains popular for sunbathing, snorkeling, and family outings. Miradouro das Avencas is a clifftop
viewpoint with benches overlooking the sea. It offers panoramic views of the rocky
shore, and it’s a perfect spot to watch the
sunset paint the sky and water. Praia das Avencas is a protected marine
area known for its ecological richness. The tide pools here host rare species and
are studied by marine biologists. This quiet beach is a favorite for nature
lovers and photographers.
