As he raced past, French cyclist Julian Alaphillippe grabbed the sign that featured words of encouragement to his rival the Belgian racer, Wout van Aret.
It was later revealed that Alaphillippe tore the cardboard and then tucked it inside his shirt as a way to preserve body heat.
The two-time world champion explained, “In the end the story ended well, I apologised to the woman whom I took it from. I gave her a bib, and she took a picture with Wout”.
