Long time lurker and occasional contributor here. I’m looking at doing a 1-week trip from Manchester to Exeter at the end of August, to see a Women’s rugby World Cup in one and then the other. So I can’t get too distracted as I have a ‘deadline’ but it shouldn’t be more than 5hrs/day at 15km/h (~80-85km a day).

This is the route that Komoot recommends: and I just wanted to ask for any advice / tips / suggestions / ideas from anyone with experience near the route.

I’m hoping to either wild camp (discreetly), use campsites or ask to pitch in peoples’ gardens. I’m not bringing a stove so good cafe / pub spots doubly appreciated!

Roughly thinking: Salford -> Telford -> Worcester -> Gloucester-> Bristol -> Taunton -> Exeter. I don’t mind – and often prefer – quiet paved roads over gravel.

Thank you in advance, and I’ll try answer any questions!

  1. I used to cycle from Manchester to Glastonbury on a yearly basis so I’ve tried a few different routes for the first part. I settled on a slightly more easterly route but my distances are slightly longer.

Manchester to outside Shrewsbury (70 miles)
    Shrewsbury to Hereford (56 miles)
    Hereford to Bristol (55 miles)

I was stopping at campsites on the way (don’t want to wild camp when you’ve got 5 days of festival at the end of it).

One warning; doing this route ended up as a gateway to cycling from the UK to Vietnam when I got made redundant…

Lemme know if you want any more specific advice

Have you got a link to your route? Because that looks like A30/B3181 Taunton to Exeter.
