On my bike ride to Mont Ventoux, I was well prepared for the brutal incline. However, on the climb, I quickly realised that this wasn’t actually the biggest challenge. But let’s start at the beginning. Good morning everyone! Welcome to my next cycling adventure on this canal. Today I have a very special treat in store, every cyclist’s dream, I think. I’m riding up the Géant de Provence today. Today we’re going up Mont Ventoux. I started near Avignon. Now we’re going to Pernes-les-Fontaines, from there on to Carpentras and then to Malaucène. I’ve decided to make the climb up Ventoux from Malaucène. It’s a little less famous than the climb from Bédoin, which the Tour de France also climbs, but the route is a bit more varied and I’d like to try it out today. Beautiful cycle path here before Pernes-Les-Fontines. Ah, it’s fun to roll along here. It’s much nicer than the busy main road, of course. I’ve left Carpentras behind me. It’s been a leisurely warm-up up to here. The next stop is Malaucène. It’s a gentle climb up there, up into the village. That’s just to get used to the climb that comes after. Up ahead, you can already see Mont Ventoux, still shrouded in clouds, but it’s really impressive how it rises from the landscape. I thought it would be a leisurely ride to Malaucène, but the wind is already murderous. It’s blowing from all directions. You have to pedal at a rapid pace to make any progress… I think I’ll be completely exhausted by the time I get to the foot of the Ventoux. Well, if I’d known what was waiting for me at the top of the mountain, I hardly would have complained about this gentle breeze down here on the plains below. I’ve arrived in Malaucène. So far, things have been going well. The wind was a bit annoying, but yes, now the tour is really just beginning. Let’s see if I can conquer the giant of Provence with my fighting weight of 90 kg. It will definitely be strenuous, but I’m looking forward to the climb. Here we go. The climb has begun. Now it’s a good 1,500 meters of elevation gain. 20-21 km, and then we’ve already reached the summit. The first few meters start off well, with an 8-9% gradient. But ultimately, it’s just a taste of what’s to come. Let’s get on with it. The whole thing wasn’t even planned. We were supposed to spend a week’s vacation in the mountains. But the weather was simply terrible. Temperatures were sub-par, with 20 to 30 mm of rain per day. Then we spontaneously decided to take a short break in Provence instead of our mountain vacation. We were lucky enough to find a great offer, despite it being summer vacation. And of course, since you’re already in Provence, then I can’t resist. Then of course you have to do the tour up Mont Ventoux , and so I’m overjoyed. Nice surprise, I didn’t think it would be on the list this year. But yes, here I am, panting up the climb to the summit. It’s not exactly sunny today, it’s quite overcast. But it has the advantage that it ‘s not so blazingly hot. It’s about 14° here at 800 m. It’s quite pleasant for the tour. This first part is very easy. The first third of the climb, so 6-7%, sometimes up to 10%, sometimes a little less. But pedaling at such a leisurely pace, you make good progress. The next milestone has been reached. There are only 1000 meters left to the summit. Ah, we’ll take that one. Let’s go on. Luckily, it’s not so cold anymore that snow chains are needed. Now comes a slightly flatter section. It’s good to recover a bit. I really need that right now. Besides the incline, there’s also a terrible wind. Not only do I have to lug my weight up here, I also have to fight against the wind, and that’s tough. There are still a good 500 meters of elevation gain to go, and we’ll tackle that now. We’re here at the turnoff to Mont Serain. I’m going to treat myself here. A quick refreshment stop to refuel. There’s still about 450-500 meters of elevation gain, 6 km. Now comes the final stage, where it climbs up into the moon rock. Quite strenuous, but a short break will do me good. Every kilometer there’s a road marker showing how far it is to the summit, how many kilometers, how many meters of elevation remain, and what the average gradient is for the next kilometer. It ‘s kind of meditative. You clamber from stone to stone, are happy that another kilometer has been completed, and simply count the stones backwards as stages. I had enormous respect for the Ventoux, this legendary climb. I was concerned about whether my fitness would be sufficient. But the real test was waiting at the very top. Nature showed its merciless side. The wind blasted across the summit at over 100 kilometers per hour. Gusts of up to 144 kilometers per hour threatened to simply sweep me off my bike. Every pedal stroke, every steering movement required utmost concentration to avoid losing control. Added to that was the biting cold. It was the end of July, but the temperature felt like 0°C and my fingers were going numb. But giving up was out of the question. I could see the finish line in sight, just a few hundred meters left. I simply had to push through. This last section became an act of willpower. When I finally reached the top, the joy was immense and the relief overwhelming. I had conquered the mountain, the giant of Provence, and also the wind. A feeling you never forget. Afterward, I was looking forward to the descent, but with the wind, it was definitely not a good idea. This wasn’t how I imagined the descent, but the wind is so strong right now that riding down is out of the question. A whole column of cyclists is pushing their bikes down here right now. We’ll see when the wind dies down enough so that we can think about riding again. Of course, one thing you can’t miss when riding down here, or walking down like I am now. This is a visit to the Tommy Simpson memorial. After just under a kilometer of walking, the time had come. The winds died down, and the leisurely descent to Sault could begin. I’ve reached the valley floor. It’s a bit warmer again. I was able to take off my jacket again. The wind is still blowing strongly, but warmer now. Now it climbs a little bit to Sault, and that is the end of the stage. I entered Sault happy and satisfied. I had conquered the Giant of Provence and was also happy to have survived the tour unscathed in these stormy winds. I think I truly deserved the refreshment afterwards. If you liked the video, I’d appreciate a thumbs up and also a subscriber. Thank you so much for watching. Now there’s one more thing. My family is picking me up here in Sault: my wife and my youngest son. They brought me a little surprise, and I just have to show it in the video.
