Ironman Leeds Recon Ride With Full Black Hill Footage.
My Ironman training continues to go well.
Thank you for watching the swim, bike, run Stu YouTube channel.
hello and welcome to Leeds welcome to Leeds Iron Man Recon number two uh today I’m going to give it a go on the road bike rather than the TT bike uh yeah if you’ve not seen over video on the TT bike go and uh check that out uh yeah I’ve come here today uh and I’m going to come with the two lads that I’ve been training with uh their first Iron Man uh they’ve not been to Leed before pretty new to cycling uh so we’re going to go and do a loop maybe two loops we’ll see how they go uh yeah just get them a feel for the course so if you’re if you are a new cyclist if you’re new to Iron Man then yeah these boys are exactly the same boat as you uh so yeah we’ll get their feedback we’ll see how they feel of the courses obviously it’s different to how I feel the courses i don’t think I Well I’m 95% sure I’m going to ride my TT bike rather than my road bike uh this is an old Boardman Air fantastic bike probably be lovely and comfortable uh on race day I would have no problems riding this uh round Iron Man leads no problems whatsoever but I feel I’d probably just be that little bit quicker on the TT bike just having the arrow bars just on the in between sections will just make a big difference but yeah nothing wrong with using a road bike so yeah the traffic was awful this morning yeah uh I think they’re going to be a little bit later behind me so yeah let’s get changed let’s get ready uh we’ll meet the boys and then yeah we’ll go for a ride uh around the lead’s course uh I’ll get a good video of Black Hill i won’t mess up the cameras this time like my last video uh so yeah I’ll video up Black Hill to see what it’s like it’s not that tough it’s not that it’s it’s a climb but it’s not horrific uh like I said it be pretty tough on the third loop but yeah shouldn’t have too many issues most people right let’s get changed and the boys have made it let me introduce you to Michael how’s it going and Michael so two first timers riding the course the first time nervous all right a little bit nervous to be fair all right we’ll be sound see that’s the right thing be a bit nervous that’s the way to do it don’t go in all confident and cocky uh yeah be a bit nervous we’re going to take our time uh we’re just going to enjoy it we’re going to have a nice poodle round today see what it’s all about get on Black Hill maybe once maybe twice but I’ll be honest they’ve done harder climbs with me uh so they they’ll find it a breeze it’s we had a pretty tough ride Sunday uh so this this will be easy for them road bikes over here ready to rock and roll and uh yeah let’s go let’s go and ride [Music] heat [Music] up here [Music] [Applause] heat [Music] heat [Music] heat [Music] heat [Music] heat [Music] up [Music] [Applause] here heat [Music] heat [Music] so don’t go wrong so you got to go down that hill to come back up that hill and then we’re going to go this way but yeah wrong way they wanted more elevation you see they said it’s a bit flat more elevation god I’m blowing up there right let’s crack on right so we are 15 miles in how we feeling boys feeling good yeah we are averaging 14 mph but we are just it’s super hot we’re just taking it nice and steady just checking it all out and I think everyone’s feeling all right everyone’s feeling pretty good so yeah if people are worried about cut offs and times and stuff like literally we’re riding at 40 mph not pushing it and we’re cruising yeah we’re literally just cruising yeah so it’s Yeah there’s some climbs but there’s all some downhill there and flat uh so yeah at 40 mph we are just tapping out really really super easy no one’s dying no one’s struggling so if you’re worried about it don’t don’t worry don’t until the third lap when you were all crying don’t want to do it anymore so we’re now just coming through this sort of lake or sewage treatment plant whatever it’s called uh I think this is the worst uh of the roads that people have been saying uh so yeah we’ll get around this bit up here uh and then I’ll show you the big potholes that I remember from last time uh these boys are absolutely smashing it doing fantastic uh yeah really learning how to ride the bikes considering the ven started to really ride the bikes from the start of this year they’re absolutely smashing it and yeah they’re really getting the feel for these bikes uh these last few long rides we’ve done so let’s go and uh show you all these potholes uh whether they’ll be repaired or not who knows but nothing’s worse than where I live if you live in Comry in Warikshire yeah we have these terrible roads all around where we live so yeah we’re not too fussed about it and how bad they are so yeah I don’t think they’re that that terrible if I’m honest [Music] heat hey Heat [Music] right we’re now on Black Hill Climb the one that everyone’s talking about uh I’m going to film the whole thing yeah I’m going to try and keep it nice and controlled sort of between 200 and 250 watts nice and easy in the little ring in a little gear we’ll see how we go there’s Beanot there’s MJ we’re all just going to climb here nice and steady today is not about going fast it’s just about taking it nice and easy and here we go here’s Black Hill uh I didn’t feel much well before this corner uh because it’s just a couple of percent it’s really from this corner where it sort of starts to get steeper it’s uh yeah I don’t think the camera is going to do it justice but as you’re looking at it here like these lads said it does look like you’re about to climb up a wall it looks really steep in front of you and then from the sort of this farm build on the left is where it really starts to steepen up it’s uh yeah pretty steep but yeah nothing terrible at this stage it’s not until we get sort of further up that it gets a bit steeper uh so then we swing the camera around just so you see basically we’re going to watch the lad suffer hopefully see sort of the the steepness of it like I said it’s steep at the bottom and then it gradually eases off it just goes on a bit uh so our plan was basically just to ride this at Well there you go mj nearly got run over by that that lorry there i didn’t notice that um but yeah we decided we’re going to ride this at conversational pace i just kept saying “Are you breathing lads talk to me.” Uh so they were they were chatting it it’s not easy it’s not easy at all we we sort of had an agreement it was going to be between 200 and 250 watts we were going to keep it at i just keep ticking off trying to make it as easy as possible while applying a little bit of pressure you You can only make it so easy when when it’s steep you can only make it so easy can’t you but yeah the lads are weaving a little bit i’m weaving a little bit i think this is sort of there’s a little corner that we go around and I find that the steepest bit and then what you got to think is the climb just keeps going you sort of go around a few corners and it just keeps going up so don’t don’t try and race the bottom bit you want to just pace it nice and steady cuz you you’re not going to lose anything it’s not a massive climb you’re not going to lose anything by slowing up on this climb you want to save it for when you get over the top cuz as soon as you get over top of this it’s like a big fast couple of cent downhill where you can just absolutely smash it so don’t die here oh there you go look Bean’s having a little wave u So yeah just ticking over all we’re doing is ticking over these lads have never been up it um it’s probably one of the steepest climbs they’ve ever done but they’re absolutely smashing it so I’m going to put a bit of music over now uh enjoy watching these boys suffer and then we’ll catch up at the top heat heat [Music] heat heat [Music] heat heat n heat heat n [Music] heat heat [Music] so we’re getting near the top now uh I’ll put uh the official sort of time that we did it in so we went up in 8:04 so it’s 8 minutes uh from the bottom so it’s not We average 242 watts heart rate 145 beats a minute so I wasn’t absolutely dying going up here so yeah out of your day it’s it’s 8 minutes it’s uh So if you’re worried about it it’s not long and look we get to the top here and let’s go let’s start pushing on and let’s uh roll away so this is the way to do recon rides uh I forgot to record before but we’ve just had a pub lunch we’re at the Dexter so we’ve had a nice pub lunch already for the 8 miles back to the car and then they’re planning a run so I’m deciding whether I’m going for a run with them or I’m not going to bother you’re doing You’re doing the run okay i’m doing the run yeah so it’s uh Yeah if you’re going to come for a recon do it with these lads get a pub perfect it’s the way to do it enjoying it [Music] right so we’re heading home now we’ve just done the one loop had a lovely lunch we’ve gone over that last climb and uh yeah we’re just heading towards the the bridge back over and down the hill towards Ronda Park yeah it’s been lovely it’s been nice bit windy quite warm but yeah nice little recon we’ll speak to the lads when we get back uh and then I think they persuaded me to go for a run so not sure about that but we’ll give it a go right one loop done how’d you find it it was okay few short short steep climbs but as a whole there’s there’s more than just Black Hill but nice and steady and you’re fine same really one after Black Hill that’s the one you’ve got to watch yeah so nothing major is it some nice long downhills as well nice long long stretches as long as you’re smart with the inclines and these boys have been cycling for about 2 months so true so I mean if these can do that and like two months training you guys will be all right right i’m going to put this down they’re going to make me go for a run my worst bit right so home now uh just going to quickly wrap this video up uh I’ll put the stats up of the ride so I’ll stick that up uh sort of averaged uh what was that 13.9 mph just took it super steady uh we just wanted to feel fresh at the end and feel good so yeah super super steady uh yeah the lads did fantastic like great effort absolutely great effort uh and then they dragged me out for a run so I’ll put the stats up for the run we did most of the run course uh not all of the the run course cuz I was trying to follow it on my watch and uh yeah we missed a little bit out but it doesn’t really matter but yeah the run wasn’t horrific if I’m honest uh so my thoughts on the course again is I’m 100% going to ride my TT bike uh yeah there’s far too many fast sections uh between the clims uh that I’ll need the TT bike on so I’m definitely going to go TT bike if you’ve got a road bike clip on arrow bars are going to be a good shell but then also if you’ve just got a road bike just ride your road bike but yeah for me 100% TT bike it’s going to be a tough day out don’t get me wrong but it’s a rolling course like I say with one sort of big climb there’s some nice recovery sections and uh uh to sort of recover on and uh yeah so not too bad uh yeah like I say three laps it’s just going to be tough and it’s a long way isn’t it 112 mi over 60 is long way so thank you very much for watching this video uh think about liking and subscribing leave me some comments and I’ll see you next video bye

Looks lumpy😮. But TT bike still best I reckon too.
Great video, thanks… Did you manage to stick to 250watts up black hill? Can I be a bit cheeky and ask what w/kg that would be for you? 😅
I can't believe they made you run! With friends like these, eh?😅
Nice that you have friends to train with. 😊
I also ride boardman air. What size tyres you be using? I’m thinking of going 28mm.
Good to see the course, I hope the recon gives you a confidence boost. Final push now 👍🏻💪🏻
Another great video, you all did really well. Especially your mates who have only ridden for a couple of months. Blackhill looks tough, especially x 3 🤣
That looked hard work 😓, well done to you all , best of luck with training 😊
Solid day of work..
Nice video, mate. It's good to see the lads making you go on the run after the bike. Going out in groups on a ride or run makes it so much easier. Hope the training is going well and good luck for the race
This is very useful! Great video Stu, smashing it! 👊

09:20 this lads bars look around a yard too wide for him
