Just want to let you lot know that if you’re watching this clip on the FOcast YouTube channel, the full episode is now available to watch exclusively on Spotify and it’s free. Come on. So, so when you get clubs like Chelsea, Man United, Man City, this is why they absolutely stack theiries high with the best young talent because they can there’s a business in selling players, young players who don’t make it to your first team. Yeah. but have got of value to somebody else home. Do do you think that the at that top end so Chelsea for example now the the best thing for a a player like Jared Branweight at Everton would be a a James Tarovski and for a young Max Clworth having an Owen Oonnell a Bentoser around is is going to develop that but do you at that upper echelons of Premier League like Chelsea being a prime example is that kind of squad balance forgo a little bit because who who who are the Bentosers who are the James Taros in that Chelsea team. So Tom, so we started this debate about me saying to you don’t don’t get I don’t want your listeners to think that everybody does it the same as Rex. Yeah, of course. So when you’ve got a director of football type model, that’s this is what you’ve just talked about about lots of young players with a value trading players registrations to be profitable. That’s what’s led by a director of football rather than a manager because the managers were only interest manager is only in inverted commas interested in winning games of football. The director of football is interested in creating a business model for the trading and football registrations that keeps the club in business. And this is why certain clubs will only employ certain managers who are able to work in that model where they know they have to just work with the players they are given. They don’t get a say in the transfer dealings. These are the players that you got to work with this season. Work with them, coach them. So, so pick your horse and ride it is the answer. You know, which which route are you going down? Now, of course, everybody wants a bit of both, but it’s impossible to have a bit of both in some Premier League clubs and further down the further down the track, everybody hopes that to have the young player coming through. You talk about Jared Bran of course because people forget he started at Carlile, right? So, he was transferred from Carlile to Everton as a young player. the day he leaves Everton to join, if there’s any Everton fans listening, a bigger Premier League club. I apologize in advance on behalf of the Foscast, but you know, if you know, if that is the case, Carile United will get weighed in under their salon. That’ll probably keep that club going for two years. Incredible. Rexom did it with Danny Ward. Yeah. Back in back in the day of the WST, sold to Liverpool. That money was useful at the time, but Rexom earned more from the sellon that they’d put in the in the deal when he went to Liverpool when he was signed by Leicester City than they ever did as the original transfer fee. Would you if you’re selling a young player, is that an absolute must then? You have to have that that little clause in that contract could be 10, 15, 20%. Yeah. And it’s not just small clubs that do it. Every club does it. Yeah. You know, there’s there’s players, you know, if young players are leaving Man City, they’re looking for 40 or 50% sell on of the future really. So, you know, if Morgan Richards moves continues up, they’re still getting weighed in. You can go as high as 50%. Yeah. You can’t usually go higher than 50%. Wow. So, how how hard is it to to put that I guess it depends on how much you want the how much the how much you want the player, how much the selling club wants to sell the player. So, so when you’re putting in um a contract in place, if you say right, we want 20% 30% sale on it, does it just depend on the demand? Well, there’s a little bit of that, but it’s usually twofold. You know, there are clubs that would give you a player on a free transfer with a 40% sell on. Yeah. Yeah. Or they’ll charge you £100,000 for him and you take a 20% sell on. Uhhuh. Yeah. It’s fascinating, isn’t it? So, there’s a gamble to the future. that little team in Ireland who got the the windfall when Quee and Keller left Liverpool and signed for Bournemouth if they got an absolute payout didn’t they 2 million quid or something like that enough to run them for the next however many years but that’s the example I’ve just given you with Jerry Bradic it happens up and down the country up and down up and down the country I you know an example I was involved with you know Fabian Del obviously played for England and Man City and Villa you know he left Braford City as a a 14y old signed for leads leads then sell him to to to Villa you Bradford City earned over a million pounds. Yeah. As a signing on fee. And and that’s the beauty of the English pyramid. In fairness, everybody talks about strength in depth of 92 teams up and down, but actually we’ve got behind the scenes this whole sort of matrix and trap tapestry of clubs retaining an interest in the value of a players registration that they’ve developed at some stage in the future. Do you reckon it will ever become Do you reckon it’ll ever become um transparent that what players have got what in their contract, whether they’ve got a release clause or whether they’ve got a sell on clause? Do you reckon it’ll ever get to the point or will ever get to the point where you can just click on a website, go to a list, and you’ll be able to see a squad list and these are the contracts that are attributed to that? I don’t because you know there’s there’s always confidentiality provisions in there and people don’t actually need to know. Not nobody’s being deceived by not knowing the exact details of how much Rexom paid Plymouth for Ryan Hardy. So, okay, when a player is unhappy at a football club or he’s doing really well and he wants that next big move, if he does have one of these little release clauses, for example, or a relegation release clause of 40 million, £50 million, if it’s in his interest to get that move, is this where he and his agent might just let somebody know? just let somebody know that we’ve got a little 40 million pound release clause in there. The answer is of course they do. Yeah. And you know, but unsurprisingly, it’s you know, it’s a case of vested interest, isn’t it? You know, if if if there’s a release clause that works in your favor, you’ll tell everybody. If there’s not, then you say, why don’t you ring the club and see what sort of deal you can do? you know when you see the money sort of absolutely getting pummeled in the Premier League 60 million 70 million pound Brian and Bremo and do you look at it and just think we’re not far away from we’re going to be Premier League you’d like to think in the next two 300 maybe even next year you never know but you’re when you get to that level the money just becomes a little bit more eye watering and every transfer deal in then has a little bit more jeopardy involved in I think we’re there now posy truth I don’t I don’t think we have to for the Premier League. Um, you know, you’re now looking at you’re now looking at trying to sign, you know, our model has always been we wanted to sign players that were at least used to play one division higher than that we were that we were playing in. Um, now if we’re going to do that now, we’re signing players who are Premier League quality. They want Premier League wages. Now, so we’re looking at, you know, we’ve actually probably subdivided the championship into top end and bottom end, you know, and even if you’re looking at signing players from the top end of the championship to come and help you on your journey, they’re earning fortunes more, you know, we I mean, our wage bill now a month will will be more than we paid for the the whole time we were in the National League, probably. Yeah. Now, obviously income’s gone up as well, so it’s not it’s not just a oneway, not just a one-way street, but the actual real mechanic is is fascinating. So, I’ve talked to the club. We’ve we’ve agreed a deal. We’ve agreed a deal. Well done, mate. Thank you. We’ve agreed we’ve agreed a deal. We’ve got a deal done with a player. Yeah. So, everybody’s happy, you know. Then, of course, you play the real game of Jeopardy. He comes in for his medical. Yeah. Uh, you know, hold on, hold on, hold on one second quickly. So, when it comes to transfer fee, Yeah. So you’re buying a player for a million pounds. Okay. Is it up to the club that are selling to say we want that million pounds in one lump sum or then you go hold on we haven’t got a million pound to go right now. We might only have 500 grand but what we’ll do is we’ll spread it out over the next two or three years. So so so most deals most transfer deals are not on the nose the one to use a horse racing phrase. Most transfer most transfer deals of a significant nature. So, you know, a million pounds might be half now and half in 12 months. Yeah. It it might be if you’re buying from a Premier League club who just wants the value of the transaction on the books and are less concerned about when the money arrives, they might give you four years to pay. Oh, really? It’s easier to negotiate. Absolutely. Absolutely. So, you know, so we we are, you know, we will be paying for players that we’ve that we’ve bought now. we’ll still be paying for them in two years time on an agreed payment run kind of like a loan repayment scheme. Absolutely. Equally I mean we haven’t sold many players because you know we’ve not you know that’s the difference in the marketplace. We’ve been getting players for a purpose who were then free to go and join you know we’ve had very we’ve had very very very few. I mean, young Luke McNicholas, we sold to Forest Green Rovers. We got to have to dust a different file off here. How would you actually how would you actually sell a player, you know, but that’s not any shortcoming on the club. It’s just the purpose of the players that we’ve been is the model and that’s and that’s what’s different. Thanks everybody for watching. We hope you enjoyed this clip of the Foscast. The championship is where the Wrexham story ends.
Sean has been fantastic for Wrexham. Just having him on board allowed Rob & Ryan to be able to better hire the best people instead of them guessing, as they didn’t know anyone or anything about the sport ahead of time
Chelsea have owners that are Billionaires, Wrexham have owners that are Millionaires. Simple.
Wasn't there a team in Ghana?? that had a sell-on clause that paid them enough to run the club for a decade or something for a single player.
Watched the Documentary and find myself agreeing with a lot of what this guy says. Seems like a proper football guy. Knows the game inside out
Thats why many english clubs try to avoid players from spain on an RC. In spain you have to pay the full amount upfront to LaLiga. And they will transfer the money to the sellers club. And release him to get registered in another league.
Shaun is a legend. Down to earth, intelligent and humble. A great guy for Wrexham FC.
This was very interesting
Ryan Hardie left for 690k
Very educational, interesting to note that the higher Prem teams will take money spread out more than in one lump sum.
Coming in live from Upper Hutt!!!… 🥝
If they stick with their league 2 manager because he's now famous on Disney+, they're fucked
I love listening to Shaun Harvey… he’s so smart. I’m glad he stayed more than the initial ‘six months’. 😊 Now, his legacy includes the Wrexham rise. How cool is that? ❤
One of the most hated and loved people in English/welsh football. Time at Leeds was what it was. EFL he had to navigate some bad purchases. He was bound by the rules so it’s not really on him, but his signature is on it. He’s been a goldmine for Wrexham
Is there a cap on the amount of players in each Academy year group?
Or can Man City literally have 100 players per year group if they wanted?
He went to brentford not Bournemouth ffs
There's a reason why Sean won't leave Wrexham. It completely changes his legacy. Shawn was known as being the bad guy, to really awful owners, or even the EFL as a league. Now he's the realistic guy, with two idealistic owners. He's still the baddie, but turns out to be the hero saving the club from bad ideas that won't work. And in Parky, he has someone who thinks like he does. Parky realizes that this is his one shot to get to the Premier League, so they're totally in sync. It's a perfect situation for everyone, and the secret sauce why Wrexham keep climbing. Back to back to back to back is not a pipe dream any longer.
Did Diod Ryan Hardie come home from Down Under? I heard his car is still in the lot. Did he sustain a concussion?
Not sure Wrexham should even be in the same conversation as Chelsea when it comes to transfer reality, Chelsea have just become world champions and spend over a billion and Wrexham are just an old Div 1 team that have just come up to championship..It's a moronic comparison !
Very intelligent guy we are lucky to have him
Shaun is a legend 💯
I'd love to see an episode with craig gardner
This was a brilliant interview! Sooo interesting to get a peek behind the scenes of the transfer market. More please! ❤
Who brought up Chelsea👀
What the heck😑
Watched the full episode on Spotify – brilliantly informative AND entertaining from start to finish. Thanks so much.
Very interesting! Great pod. Only critique is that I really wanted to hear what Shaun was going to say about medical. Has anyone ever made it through negotiations, set to come to Wrexham, and then failed medical? If you could ask next time, appreciated.
Coventry fan here.
I've been really impressed with the owners & staff at Wrexham. The Championship will bring a new challenge, this is where it gets serious. Having said that, I thought the overall standard, bar the top 5, was poor last season. Probably the worst I've seen, since we got promoted 4 years ago.
This shows how disgusting clubs like City and Chelsea are, stock piling young players for profit benefits nobody else in football, ruining the game
Can you get Calum Paterson or windass on your podcast
Nice to listen to someone who actually knows what their talking about. Football is a business.
Used Chelsea as a click bait, 2 completely different club. Wrexham get funded by Disney and is trying to sell a fairy tale of lower league team moving up the English Pyramid, has more resources and clout to pull players than all these Championship/League one team.
Ben come on, no need to talk about eye watering fees of mbeumo when other clubs have spent £100m+ on players Rice, Caicedo, Grealish, Nunez or even more than £70m this season eg Ekitike £80m,
This was fantastic
