Title says it all! Going on an international multi-week tour. 99% paved, self-supported, carrying clothes and shelter but eating meals out. Both of these frames are on the market near me in the $200-300 range. Which is the better choice?

Those look like two completely different sized frames. Which one actually fits you? Thats the most important thing n
For touring the 520 hands down. Literally built to be a touring bike whereas the Volpe was found to work as a tourer and grew that way.
That said the volpe will have more modern drivetrain specs.
I had a 520 w down tube shifters that I upgraded to sti. If I were to do it again I’d put essentially mountain cranks there but it was a fun do absolutely everything bike and I was able to do club rides during the week and touring on the weekends.
The 520 is an awesome bike. If you happen to run across another member of the cult it’s a good conversation starter too.
If it’s in good condition and your size, the 520 is an evergreen frame and never a bad choice
I have a 520 of a similar year, great touring bike.
I think the Volpe has a bit smaller tire clearance, but unsure.
I’d prefer STI to bar end shifting, but the frame size is most important.
Whichever one fits you better. These look like quite different sizes.
