Ahead of the F1 British Grand Prix, I thought I’d set myself a little challenge…
I was going to cycle all the way from my house to the circuit. Which is over 90 miles…
Now, ever since my IRONMAN challenge I’ve not really cycled, so it was time to get back on the bike!
After Kona should be a walk in the park right?
How wrong was I… 👀

Whose idea was this? It’s going to be a real grind. We have just had an issue. It feels so close, but so far. Oh god. Oh, my bum hurts. It is early. Good morning and welcome to my latest YouTube video. You might wonder why are you up at 3:30 in the morning? I’ve got a mini challenge for today. We’ll get straight to it. Cycling to Silverstone today. This weekend is the British Grand Prix and I thought need to get some cycles training in. I’m working at Silverstone this weekend. Is there a way that I can do both? Going to be a 95 mile cycle. But yeah, 3:30 a.m. Time to get this show on the road. Here we go. I don’t know why I do these things sometimes. Eating jam on toast and a banana at 3:55 in the morning. Final bit of the car loads happening now. Then got to get all the kit ready, lights on the bike, do his final bike checks. My trainer will be coming over and then hopefully we’re all set and we can leave at 5:00 a.m. as planned. So yeah, just over an hour to go until the cycle to Silverstone gets underway. I wanted to do something a bit different for Silverstone. Normally I would always drive up there. I just Googled how far away roughly it was and I thought well I cycled further than that before. It’ll be I don’t know around 7 hours on the bike. So it’s the Wednesday before the British Grand Prix. So maybe I see some fans that are driving up for the weekend as well. It’ll be I don’t know around 7 hours on the bike. So, it’s kind of like getting my week’s training done for the cycling in one hit. This is going to be my second biggest ride that I’ve ever done. All my training rides for Kona, none of them were 95 miles. This is not going to be an easy day. Morning, mate. It’s early, isn’t it? It is early. You are not wrong. I’m I’m just at the gate. Good morning. How you doing? Very good. It’s uh it’s an early one, isn’t it? He’s obviously been there before and done this, so I’m not not particularly worried. Yeah, it should just be should be a nice day out. This bike that I’ve got is not as finely tuned as the one I used for Hawaii. You know, there’s part of me that thinks I’m going to be more uncomfy on this ride than I was in Hawaii. So, that’s one thing. It’s just a training session at the end of the day. Just chipping away, trying to enjoy it as much as possible. But, yeah, got a feeling it might be a little bit uncomfy and a bit sore on the saddle. Yeah, let’s give it a go. Yeah. Yeah. Silverstone Adventure. There it is. Yeah. Okay. We’re going to star it. Look at that. Lots of red triangles, sharp turns or ples. Nothing dramatic. [Music] If you need something, just raise your arm up in the air. Yeah. If it’s really urgent, like it’s a mechanical or something’s falling off. Yeah. Then just like wave around like a mad man. All right. I’ll do my best. Yeah. At least it’s bright nice and early. Yeah, I’m all right. Nice. [Music] Whose idea was this? I believe it was yours. I know it was. How am I feeling so far? Right. to be fair. I mean, we are only an hour and 20 in. We’ve done 28k and we’ve got an 135 to go. So, barely scratched the surface really of today, but it’s actually the first time I’ve probably been back out on the road since Hawaii. So, to jump out on the road and then kind of go and cycle 100 miles is like a bit mad, you know. All right. Yeah, I’m good. We’re cutting through the hills now. Um on our way to Gilford. So it roll up some elevation a bit. Yeah. But it’s not going to go steep. Nothing extended. Yeah. He’s looking face is good. He’s looking smooth. Cadence is good. He’s in good spirits as well. Here we come. If you’re generally positive, then you’ll find yourself in a much better place. [Music] So, we’ve just done our first proper stop. We’ve just found a little cafe that we’ll know. So come in, had some normal food rather than the gels and all of that kind of stuff. We’re 2 hours in to the ride and that’s the longest that I’ve done in one hit since Kona. So breaking it up a little bit, keeping everything fresh. But yeah, just had a little pit stop ready to get going again. I’m I’m being not being funny at this point. I’ve snacked it so many times. It’s like seeing a bit. Really happy with that. That’s just over 40k in. Main thing was getting through Gilford. You know, it’s really busy. The timing is good. Effort load is is perfect. Let’s see where we are at halfway. [Music] Rail’s still all right. My neck got a bit sore towards the end there. I was trying to try and stretch my neck. Yeah, I don’t know if it’s like cuz I’m been looking up ahead of me a lot. Ticking along nicely. I’m still in the sort of that southeastern quarter which is busy. Next phase is Maiden Head. This is the the messiest chunk in terms of traffic and all that stuff. So, you know, we’ve done really good. And last time we stopped was just there. We’ll push on for another hour or something. Half iron man to go. Oh god. That’s one way of thinking about it. All right. [Music] I’m feeling confident. Certain areas that I thought would get sore are starting to get sore. If it like gets really sore and I decline quite a lot, then I think that last 60 70k is going to be a real grind. So, we get some fuel in me and uh head down and just see how how we get on really. So, if we give ourselves another hour for this next 70, it should be done then. Another hour. Yeah. We’ve just turned on 5 600 watts. As soon as you stop, everything just starts to You’re like up a little bit. Bit stiff here. A bit tight there. So, we watched you from Portugal. Yeah, we watched Portugal. Yeah. You’re international now. And our kids watched too. Yeah. The kids were super inspired. The first time we ever did a bike ride, it was in the documentary. This would knee was a new like unit I’d never used before. And it was like effectively like straight like it is now. So you you need to bend it a bit to get your tool in here to loosen it off to cycle. If you flick it, it opens up. We were literally trying to bend this thing. It wouldn’t bend. Mark and we were hammering this this thing. Steve, right? Don’t tell Steve. This I think they’re probably the hammer. Some of the hammer marks are probably on the air. I think that might be some of the nicks from today as well. It could have been from the stacks. Yeah. I’m just trying to blame you guys. See you. Right. So, we have just had an issue with the pedal. The magnets’s come out. Lost the magnet on the left pedal. Let’s do what? See what we can figure out. Cut an edge of of sport. Bit of cardboard. Bit of tape in black stealth to match the pedal and the cranks. Bit of black nasty cardboard. Job’s a good. No problem. Job is a good. All right, I’ll get cracked on. All right, see you in a bit. So hopefully the changes to the pedal will hold on hold up until I get to Silverstone and then it’s job done. So far feeling all right. It’s only when you get to the latter stages of, you know, long distance ride like this, you can really feel the drop in fitness. Yeah. Let’s see how we get on. I am getting a bit tired. A little bit lower back bit sore and my neck. But it is what it is. Yeah, I’ve done 6 hours of riding. Just over 6 hours of riding. Hopefully just under 38k. 38k. Yeah. There you go. On the home straight. Very doable now. Onto a standard distance triathon. To a standard distance travel. The reason we’re doing this, it’s fun. Oh well. It’s fun for us. Um but it is it’s just, you know, it’s a challenge. It’s bit of a challenge. something that’s a little bit different outside of normal training is it’s totally doable. And yeah, I think if you don’t mix up training with bits and pieces like that, then you know, at this early stage, as we get closer to Yeah. then you’re more and more dialed. Yeah. But then we, you know, we won’t be able to do this thing. So, it’s nice to get this sort of thing done, do it. This GoPro is heavy, but we’re moving. Nice little downhill section I just did then, which was nice. Uh, it’s definitely got warmer, though. There’s your update. Hope this detour doesn’t add too long. It feels so close, but so far to be honest, I’ve done 143 km on the bike. We had to do a little detour. Like my legs actually feel all right. It’s just my lower back is just tight and I think it’s just haven’t spent loads of time in that sort of position ever before really. Definitely nowhere near this amount of time. All I keep thinking is, “Oh my god, how did I run a marathon after cycling 180 kilometers and swimming beforehand?” Cuz like right now, if you said to me, “Billy, you’ve got to run a marathon.” I think I would burst into tears. But yeah, right now all I’m thinking about is trying to enjoy the last little stretch, arrive at Silverston, see what’s going on British Grand Prix week, and then yeah, chill out and get off that bike. Oh god. Oh, my bum hurts. [Music] Last stretch. Nearly there. We have done 103 and 1/2 miles. 168k. So I think the route’s going to be around 170. So 10k off the iron man. Work really hard today. Nearly there. Ah god, that hurt. Thank you. Jesus, that hurt a lot. That last bit was hard. But we made it. Get in. That was a long day at the office. Maybe don’t cycle to Silverston from your house, especially if you live over 100 miles away. Do you know? I learned a lot today actually cuz it’s all right doing something when you’re like fully prepared and ready like I was for Kona to then cycle, you know, 7 and 1 half 8 hours and get up to Silverstone to be here at the British Grand Prix. It’s an it’s it’s an exciting cool challenge and I’m uh yeah, really happy about it. Never say never because I think sometimes like even before I set off today I knew that I was like you know I might have bitten off more than I could chew. So I think even like when you got those doubts, you got those fears, you think ah you can’t do something, it’s good every once in a while to push that push that comfort zone and to actually do something that you don’t think you can do cuz then when you do do it like right now I feel like full of pride, really happy with like the effort that I’ve put in today and I’m hope hoping that this will now give me a boost and get me back into the swing of things properly when training kicks off. One of the best bits of the bike ride was the last few kilometers when I was seeing all the campsites, all the flags waving, all the RVs pulling in on the right, the people turning up to the campsite already. So that’s Woodland’s campsite. It just reminded me of my childhood. Like this is where I came when I was like 9 10 years old to watch my first ever British Grand Prix. Super excited for the weekend. Thank you all for watching. Hope you enjoyed the video. Me being a bit out of my comfort zone at plenty of times there, but here we are, British Grand Prix. And that’s a wrap.
