Welcome to day 38 of the tour. Uh, I’m somewhere. title says I’m in Hap Saloo. I’m actually 15 14 some amount of kilometers before it. I thought I’d just put it there. It’s closest place of significance. Uh it rained a lot last night. I was happy to be in my tent. I’m happy to have my new tent without holes in it. That’s a big bonus. Um Septto kit. I I couldn’t find my proper patch kit, but I found some like waterproof tape. I think a lot of tape is supposed to be waterproof anyway to just like patch up some of the holes I marked. Didn’t work. So, slept on the ground. Either need to actually properly patch this thing or get a new one cuz I’m tired of sleeping on the ground. Like actually on the ground. The sleeping pad goes on the ground, but then I’m on top of the sleeping pad. I lose the air, then I’m actually on the ground. Anyway, how’s everyone doing this morning? Or if you’re in North America and you’re up at a degenerate hour, nighttime, or if you’re in Asia or Australia, evening. Okay. I tried well I did call Sarah last night and she could barely hear me over the rain. It’s just hear about the earthquake. Yeah, this morning I saw the news like the earthquake itself is luckily at a very unpopulated region of eastern Russia. Correct. But then tsunami risk But I think from what I’ve heard like at the populated areas by the time whatever tsunami was created was reaching there it was quite minimal in size when I was in Japan. And the first streaming trip in Japan 2019, I was camped on the west coast of Japan and there was a was a 7.0 earthquake and then there was a tsunami warning and I was camped like right at a river inlet to the Sea of Japan. Um, not where you want to be if there was a tsunami. So, I got evacuated by some fishermen that were fishing in the park that I was camped in. Some bears are worried out here. Uh, I’m not currently worried about bears, but maybe I should. Usually, I’m not. Bears are like giant raccoons usually. Um, and so that like I have food in my tent. knew this is like proper bear country. That’s not that’s not proper bear safe procedure. Um, but I was hungry, so I did it anyway. All right. I got drink some milk. Yeah, I thought I knew where my um because I have a Thermrest like proper patch kit for my sleeping pad. Um and I had seen it earlier on the trip and I thought it was in my backpack and I went out and grabbed a bunch of stuff from the trailer last night and I couldn’t find it. Hasn’t gone bad yet? No, it takes a little bit. Doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Well, if you want to keep it for like however long the best before date says like two weeks or whatever, then yeah, you got to refrigerate it. But if you just need it for 24 hours, it’s fine at room temperature, not overnight. I’m a very experienced leave a milk out overnight enjoyer. Milk’s fine overnight. You can tell when milk goes. It makes it very clear to you that it is no longer good. It goes quite accurate. It won’t go bad overnight. Yeah. Okay. You’re saying you can’t keep it overnight. I’m like, “Watch me. Watch me.” How do you transfer all the bike stuff when heading back home? Uh so the bike goes in essentially bike box. Go to any bike shop. Well, many bike shops and they’ll just have bike boxes from when they received inventory like when they buy bikes to sell bikes. They receive them in cardboard boxes. Just go them there and they’ll usually give them to you for free. And then you just chuck your bike in there. Well, you dismantle it a little bit. Chuck it in there. Uh and then I use a separate check bag for my cycling equipment. Uh technically within your bicycle box, it is only allowed to include um your bicycle and the bicycle components itself. You can’t put your like touring gear with you. You can’t put a bunch of clothes in there. It’s supposed to be bicycle um like just your bicycle essentially and a helmet. It’s allowed. Okay, I really need to fix this [ __ ] pad, though. I even reinflated it because I’m just like, I want a little bit more time on my comfy pad with air in it. But that doesn’t last long. seems cozy. It’s really nice and like Oh, we had some proper weather last night and it’s just like trustworthy. It’ll keep me dry. Like my other tent wasn’t going to keep me very dry cuz I had a bunch of holes in it and this one’s new so it doesn’t have holes in it yet. So that’s good. Um but yeah, it’s nice to have this tent and like I was kind of excited to use it in some expected weather. Did a good job. rain two hours. We are supposed to get sporadic thunderstorms starting around 11, so that’s fine. Um, I’ll have to eat some more, but we can get up and start packing. Since it’s not that hot, I might wear protection. Wear my pants, too. That patching didn’t work. Well, I didn’t find the proper patch kit, so I just used some tape that I had. Didn’t seem to work. Why it woke up so early today? It’s 9:30. It’s not early. This crap over All right. Am I supposed to description inside? Uh, not really cuz I don’t even know what I’m doing. like if I’m taking a like a two week holiday or whatever cuz Tanya doesn’t want to work for two weeks uh or like what I’m doing. So, and then after that I’m not sure what I’m doing. So, it’s all a big question mark for Vancouver Island. I don’t know. But where it was reaching landfall wasn’t what I saw wasn’t very substantial. I don’t think they make this model anymore. There’s the synthetic uh pants that did have DWR, like water repellent coating on it. Not waterproof, but just would bead some water. Uh with reinforced knees and a reinforced butt for if you’re doing like hiking and scrambling on some rocky slopes. Um I got these back when I used to sell this stuff in 2017. They’ve held up pretty well. I’ve lost so when I left on this trip, my legs kind of like filled out these pants. Not they weren’t tight, but they were like form fitting and now they’re loose. Okay. Like it’s going to take a while. my whole uh backpack on the trailer. I emptied trying to find my patch kit. Couldn’t even find my patch kit. Found some tape. Tried to tape the sleeping pad that didn’t hold the air. Um so I slept on the ground anyway. So I was quite annoyed about that. It’s going to take a while to reload all that. This bag. And I don’t feel like showing that to you because I don’t want to drop the entire bike. front wheel parking brake hack is awesome. Using it, too. It’s with a loaded touring bike, it’s kind of necessary unless you like park up your wheel against like a wall or just something to stop it from rolling away. You kind of need something to stop it from rolling. With the weight, it just will run. If you have something like our uh tandem bike with a nice wide bipod kickstand, that’s even better. Uh in big cities it’s hard to tent like I was just in Helsinki and I got a hotel in Helsinki but um but here in Oh yeah. Yeah. I camped uh 15 km east of here. Like it’s only been what 2 3 days here since I took the ferry from uh Finland to to Thailand. Uh it’s been great though so far. Um it’s beautiful country. People have been really nice to me. Um, but yeah, I need like more time to develop like cuz I was in Finland for like a month and now I’m like just barely here only in Hops or Italian. Sorry, Italian and Hel. Well, I’ve been riding like just west from Talon to here. So, it’s mostly small towns between here and there and like some like little beach towns and stuff. Uh, but like it’s all been nice. Um, but it’s I got a bit more unlucky with the weather cuz in Finland we had like a 3 week heat wave, just pure sunshine and now here it’s getting into that variable stormy cuz last night you got a decent thunderstorm through here. Yeah, cuz I was camped just 15 km west of here in the next town over and I was supposed to come to this town last night but I didn’t because I was just going to get poured on. Yeah. But you’ve been cycling through all of the world basically. Yeah. Well, like I’ve done across Canada, through Europe, through parts of Asia, but like a lot of the world I still haven’t done. So, and because of the for cycling probably in Europe just because there’s like a lot of countries in a concentrated area and then a lot of the countries have like good cycling infrastructure. But like the favorite country you’ve been Oh, favorite country. My first trips in Japan were really cool. Uh because I spent a lot of time in like rural Japan and people would come up and want to talk to me and show me around. So I got to learn about Japanese culture in a unique way. You’re not just in Tokyo paying for hotels and food and stuff like that. You’re kind of getting invited by local Japanese people to see what their world is like. Um but it it’s hard for me to pick favorites cuz you know Japan felt very different than Finland did which felt very different. Yeah. So it depends. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. I decide to wait here. Yeah. No, like and the thing is everything I do is so usually unplanned. I don’t know where I’m going until I’m pretty much already there. Okay. So, the fact that I’m stopping here, weren’t really sure about this until, well, I was supposed to be here last night. I was going to get dinner here and then camp here and then leave this morning. But now it’s worked out in a way that ended up here. So, I wouldn’t have ended up here last night, I don’t think. Okay. So, it’s very spontaneous and I like it that way cuz I never know where I’m going to go that day, what I’m going to do that day, who I’m going to meet that day. Very interesting to me. That’s free, but then you got to be able to do that. And then where are you going to eat? Are you just going to eat at grocery stores? Are you going to dumpster dive? Are you going to eat at restaurants? There’s many different ways you could approach it. And your expenses can be from essentially next to zero all the way up to several hundred a day. Um, I guess like look at your airport like look at flights where you’re flying to and first of all check what airlines are like cheap and like the ones you’d want to fly on out of your airport and then go to that website’s or that airlines website and see what their bicycle policy is and then uh see what their is for flying with your bicycle. Some airlines are cheap like it’s just counted as a normal bag and other airlines want to charge like I think Swiss airlines wanted like 300 Swiss Franks to fly to Canada. Um so I’d say like first of all figure out how much it’s going to cost. But second of all like it’s not that difficult to fly with a full touring bike. You just have to put it in something and the something that’s easiest to put it into is a bicycle box. And that doesn’t have to be a box that you own or something like that. It’s just a cardboard box that fits a bicycle. And you can get them from any bike store when they receive inventory. They’ll have they’ll come in cardboard boxes that fit a bike and then they’ll just recycle them. So you just go there and be like, “Do you have any bike boxes? Can I have one?” If they have any, they’ll just give them to you. [Music] I’m imagining how people must have felt in the 16th, 17th century without entertainment such as podcast, radio, etc. been weird sitting in the house. I don’t think it’d be weird because how would they know any differently? Like they’re not going to be in the 16th, 17th century and be like, “Man, I could wish I could watch Twitch TV right now.” They don’t have any concept of what that is or what that form of entertainment is or even like any kind of electronic anything is. You fly into Oslo, Norway, and you ride your bike to Roterdam. Just say Amsterdam cuz the airport’s actually there. Um who are you going to rent a bike from in Norway that you can return in [ __ ] the Netherlands? It can’t like you have to do a round trip tour. You have to do a circle. I don’t want to do a circle. If you have no money, the fact that you have no money makes your life very difficult. Very difficult. If you can’t afford like accommodation or food or any kind of entertainment, life is difficult. It’s very difficult. And increasing your money intake from like nothing to like a median salary kind of amount immediately brings your like quality of life up substantially which increases your happiness substantially. But at each level above that once you have your necessities covered people get a little bit happier with more money but it doesn’t really go up much. Um because you have enough to live, to eat, to be entertained. [Music] They close at 8. I can finish this and be ready to go, though. Um how did that even come up? Oh, lottery. There isn’t much I’d want to spend like 70 million on. that I think would make my life that much happier. Like I’d buy a house somewhere. I think I’d want a house that feels like my home and then I would not feel the need to own anything else. Like maybe that would be considered an investment to buy other properties, but like in my mind I’m like I don’t need to own a bunch of houses. And this was US- based is like the returns on an increase in money making you happier was around $70,000 US. And that’s going to be geographic based too. Like some cities are a lot more expensive than others. Uh but they said this nation as a whole 70,000 USD above that like it doesn’t make you that much happier to get another like pay raise to go from 70 to 80 80 to 90 to 100. Um I think that’s outdated now. Uh inflation has been a bit of a [ __ ] in the past especially 5 years. Um, I don’t know what it would be now. Or was it about lawyers? And it was I think it’s just Oh, yeah. It was like lawyers, how much money do you make? And this one person was making like5 or $600,000 before bonuses. And bonuses were quite lucrative per year working as a lawyer in big law for whatever x number of years. And it’s just like I don’t friends, I don’t talk to family. I dedicate 80 to 90% of my like waking hours to my work. I love my work. I don’t have a life outside of my work. does allow me to essentially buy do whatever I want whenever I want to. But your life is now your work. Um, and that doesn’t sound particularly fun. Like to be fair, I describe what I do as in a very different career kind of way. Like my life is this. This is my life. I don’t have a life outside of this stream. When I end the stream, I go to bed. I talk to Sarah for like 15 minutes and I go to bed and I wake up in the morning. I like exist for an hour or two conscious but just like tired and preparing myself mentally for the day and then I stream all day and then I go to bed. This is my life for months at a time. And that’s been a struggle for me because I actually really like doing this, but once I finish a trip cuz I’m I burn out then what? [Music] Looks like I got to get [ __ ] out of here. How long you been living this life? 7 7 and 1/2 years. What to do? Whoever must figure it out at some point. I feel like a lot of people go through their whole life still not knowing the answer to that question. I don’t know because of streaming or biking. I think this is trip lifestyle because like my entire day is is a live streaming broadcast and I objectively really like doing it but like I don’t take much time for myself to like exist in my own head and like keep relations that I want to keep around like is my own doing but like my relationships with my friends and family falter when I’m traveling because I’m I’m just busy and I’m tired. And at the end of the day, honestly, the last thing I want to do is talk to anyone because I’m tired. I’ve been talking all day. Figured out for me. And I hate accounting, but it pays the bills and retirement isn’t terribly far away. I endured. Yeah. And like there was a whole like live to work ver work to live kind of thing like you leave your work and you leave your work behind and it gives you a paycheck and then you find have your life outside of your work. Um cuz a lot of the jobs that are like what people aspire to be like the work becomes your life and then you don’t really get to have a life outside of your work. Um, and what I do is like isolates me from that existing in my life cuz I feel a very strong pull towards like wanting to connect with people in real life. Um, but my lifestyle means every person I meet in real life is in passing. Uh, and when I go home, if I have friends, I’ve now been gone for so long that I feel outside of that. Um, so when I feel empty and I feel like there’s something missing, I feel like it’s that aspect. Cuz I like you’ve seen like like I like being social. I like people. But I the extent of my people is one night here, a couple hours there, a night or two over there. [Music] But touring with people again, people in Sarah potentially It’s just hard to make it work financially. This this streaming as a career is so volatile and so not guaranteed. It is not a salary. It is a small business with the most variable freaking income in the world. You know, like sometimes you have a month where someone gives you $10,000 to get a [ __ ] corn tattoo and other months you make essentially nope. Uh, I’ve really enjoyed the riding, the roads have been in good shape. Uh, so the cycling has been quite enjoyable. Well, kind of just in the the evening each day, but each day just forecast shows variable. It’s going to rain at some point. Probably possibly. I don’t know when. I haven’t spent enough time in Estonia, but I do know I’m enjoying it. had coming have been too lucky with weather lately. This is true actually. I have been extremely lucky with the weather. The girls were just like giggling over there by the um behind the bar. We can talk too anyway. considering getting you a beer around the house, but that turned into a burger. And uh like it caused me to just like loiter there for longer than I would have otherwise. But I think all things considered that worked out pretty well. Yeah. Stand looks cooler.
