Join me for a ride from the double Locks Pub Exeter. This started with a superb meal at the
Double Locks pub beside the canal. I then cycled the scenic riverside trail all the way into Topsham. I wanted to continue to Exmouth and back but I didn’t leave enough time as I was collecting my other half Uschi from the train station.
I headed back, but had just enough time to continue towards Exeter along the canal and the picturesque Exeter waterfront . It was a beautiful day again, and perfect temperatures too. I’ll make sure to have more time when I come here again.
This ride features:
Peaceful riverside paths
Charming town of Topsham
Lively Quayside area
Easy, family-friendly route
Perfect for anyone looking to explore the Exeter Estuary Trail on two wheels!
I hope that you enjoy this video, although it doesn’t show much of the route because of having to cut it short. And please don’t forget to like and subscribe to my channel if you enjoyed this video.

Another day out, another ride. I’m just starting at a place called the Double Locks, which is a pub on the canal in Exat and starting with a sirloin steak. I’m going to then ride down to Xmouth and back. And the weather’s looking lovely. Well, I think that was um probably a little bit better than the steak that I had in view the other day. But that was a sirloin that I’ve just had compared to the rump. Although the rump was amazing. I’ll just show you the pub, the double locks pub. Lovely setting. And obviously it’s so cool. called the double locks because it’s got the two locks. Right, let’s get on the bike and get riding. So, I’m riding from um this pub down to the left hand side of the esturie. I’ve done the other side before and I want to go as far as Xmouth, but it’s 5:00 already and I need to be back at the train station in exit for when my other half arrives around 7:00. So, I haven’t really given myself much time to come here. There’s a car park at the top end when you come over the tight little bridge, but you can park you can park in there without having to pay. So, I can’t really see the point in paying paying to park when there’s a big car park which is free. But, let’s pick up this cycle path. Have a bit of a ride. This is another flat nice cycle path. I’ve done the other side that goes down to Dorish. I think that’s about 10 milesi each way. That’s quite nice. And I haven’t uh haven’t yet tried this side. I’m not sure how long it’ll take me to get to Xmouth or whether I’ll have time to get there. I don’t know how long it is. It looks on the map a little bit shorter than the Dorish side. Got to pick up the trail first. I’m on the path, but I need to make sure I pick up the right trail for the um for the door up for the Xmouth trail. I’ve come to this section before just up here where we have to cross the road. It’s a very busy road actually. Luckily, there are. It’s a pedestrian crossing. And then normally I go right that way and down. But on this occasion, I’ve looked on the map. I have to go left. Not sure if I go left fork here. Yes, I do. I would guess. I think I did look on Google Maps. I think there’s another crossing further down. So, normally for the Dorish run, I just carry on where you just saw the other path and then it goes over that way just a little bit. Not very far, 30 yards or so. Then you turn left and you go along the beside the water, but I want to pick up the other one. Hope there’s a crossing up here. Hello, Mr. Mrs. Swan. There quite a few bikes around. Well, I’m guessing this is the crossing up here. This chap just pressed the lights. Yeah. Is this the side that takes you to um Xmouth along here? Yeah. Do I go that way or do Which way do I go? That way. Yeah. Okay. Thanks. That helped me. Not sure if I recorded that conversation with that chap, but if he says is right, we’re going towards Topshop. Hopefully, we’re going the right way. Well, we’re going the right way, but uh as I say, I have to keep an eye on the time. Oh, temperatures are lovely again. Warm breeze, sunshine. Must be 20 23 24°. Pretty perfect. I guess we just go straight across here. Obviously giving away the traffic first. She wasn’t too short. You feel quite vulnerable on a bike when there are lots of lumps of steel whizzing around on four wheels. I do hear of so many accidents. Well, so far I think I prefer the trail the other side that goes down to Dorish. Let’s see how this pans out. Traffic great fun. Ah, there we are. Got to go straight across here. It’s a busy place. XS3 trail. There we go. Just saw that at the last minute. It’s a lovely afternoon. Good start to the week. Oh, it’s Monday the I’ve got to work out the date now. Friday’s the 1st, which is my birthday. So, 1st 31st 30. So, it’s the 28th. Yes, it is 28th today of July. I wonder if there’s a place to get an ice cream. Mind you, 5:00 everything shuts, doesn’t it? There’s an arrow for the cycle route. Cycle route two. That’s the N National Cycling Network. This is a bit more interesting. Nice pop. Yeah, there’s the estury. Now, which way does one go now? No signposts. Ah, to remember to turn here when I get back. Any signpost to remind me? Yes, there is. So far so good. Thank you. Wasn’t sure which way you were going. You’re right. probably just got back walking back from the pub. Pink house. Oh, it’s a strong headwind. Everyone seems to walk along the road rather than use the pavement. Don’t know why. Here we go. Look, another two on the road. There are some black clouds up there and the wind for me is blowing this way. Don’t like it. Now there’s no cycling. What the bloody hell is that about? All cyclists just heading along that path, but there’s no cycling allowed. Just have a stop instead. I pass 5 and half an hour to get back I suppose and half an hourish to get into the station or 20 minutes. Just enjoy this I think for a while. It’s nice to sit and relax. Like most places, when the tide is out, it looks a mess, but I’m sure this is very nice when the water’s in. Yeah. Next time I’ll come down here, I’ll give myself more time. Then I can walk that little stretch that I saw. There are lots of little villages along that trail. It takes you eventually down to Xmouth. That’ll be quite nice. Just need more time. I underestimated really because I had something to eat at the double locks which was worth it though. It was lovely. Expensive but really nice. Yeah, shame. I was all psyched up for a nice bike ride as well. There’s that pub again further up on the right hand side here. Looks lovely. The passage house in Dosham. Well, I shouldn’t be doing many miles today. I’ve done 4.7 so far. Only been in the saddle for half an hour just bimling along. I shall definitely come back. Back to the double locks. I shouldn’t be having another meal though. Completely stuffed after that. It was lovely. I’ve got an hour before she arrives at the station. So, I’ve got half an hour, really, 35 minutes or so, just to tinker around with the bike. Oh, the marsh on the right here looks beautiful. I can see I’m guessing up ahead is exit of cathedral. I think that’s confused me. There’s another spire now as well. I can see two couple of their paddle boarding. I didn’t know this existed. This is lovely up here. Just cross over. Got nice. Remember Oh yeah. Yeah. This is rather nice here. Heat. Heat. Heat. That was nice. Need to head back to the van now and get me assing gear. Pick up the misses. another ride over. That was nice. Really nice. I hope you enjoyed that. It wasn’t that far, but it was a bit of fun in the end. Lovely views in towards Exit along the canal. I’ll have to um come here sometime with the Mrs. Park here and we can walk walk along there along the um riverfront or whatever it’s called waterfront. Really nice. Anyway, what have we done today? I have done 10.8 mi. So nearly 11. So wasn’t too bad in the end. Average speed 9.8, average cadence 67 and time in the saddle 1 hour and six. So it’s better than nothing. Got a bit of a sweat on at the moment. Gave it a bit of stick on the way back. Really nice. Love that. All I’ve got to do now is pick us up from the station, which is about 10 minutes, 15 minutes away, and then then drive back, which takes about an hour. It’s half past 6 now, so I’ve got plenty of time, actually. Thank you for joining me again. Hope you enjoyed it. Be happy. Stay safe. Until the next one.
