Ever feel like you’re stuck in a rut, just going through the motions of daily life? This video is your sign to break the cycle.
Si decided to do just that. Armed with the new Canyon Grizl, a stove for a sunrise coffee, and a very special “secret weapon,” he snuck out at 4:30 AM for a micro-adventure to escape the routine, clear his head, and put the perfect adventure bike to the test.

This is a reminder of how easy it is to find adventure right on your doorstep, and why sometimes, the best tech is the simplest.

Have you ever thought about how much of your life you just speed through without ever really thinking about it? A lot of us have a routine so entrenched that we spend all day basically walking in a rut. To change course requires effort because first you need to climb out of it. But today I’ve managed it in and around all my normal commitments. I have snuck out and had a little adventure. So, how have I got here? I love adventures, but I don’t have them as much as I should. There are always a million reasons why it’s not convenient. Not least because it’s something a bit different and it takes me out of my comfort zone. But I was sat writing about a bike, the new Canyon Grizzle, in fact, which I’d ridden home on the night before. I was writing about how it was a bike for adventure. and I was trying to work out how we could make a video introducing you to the bike and do it justice. It made me think of adventures, ones I’ve taken in the past on bike or on foot. And it made me think how I just don’t have time for them at the moment. [Music] And then I thought, s who needs time? So, here I am pedaling away from home at 4:30 a.m. on a Friday morning for a little adventure. Then, yes, I am riding a new bike. So, thank you, Canyon, for getting me out of my comfort zone. I’m not going far, nor am I doing anything particularly rugged. But that’s not the point. The point is that I’ve got a stove for my morning coffee and some warm clothes, plus a secret weapon, which I’ll tell you about in a moment. I’m riding a route I know well to a place I’m familiar with, but yet with my bike laden and in the early morning light, it feels very different. My destination is a hilltop overlooking the town where I live. From there, I’m going to be able to see the sunrise. And then once my coffee is brewed, I’ll simply head back into town, let myself in, hopefully for anyone who’s woken up, and then I can start the day perhaps a little bit more tired than usual with a certain swagger and what I’ve just done. And probably I won’t tell you all that much about the bike. Doesn’t feel like the time, but I will say that it’s a bike for adventures, big or small. [Music] [Music] This is my ice uh not Icelandic Finnish coffee. Very impressed. [Music] This little bit of kit will make tech nerds weep. It’s so uh so good. [Music] forgot a spoon. Some stirring implement. This uh I was given last week in Finland. It’s a coffee measurer. I like it. [Music] It’s just there by the fence just walking along. Just pretty up there, isn’t it? [Music] We are about to get swallowed up by mist, so I think that is time to go home. I’m not going to lie, getting up at 3:40 a.m. was not easy. When the alarm went off, I did think strongly about maybe just staying in bed. But I’m glad I didn’t. And I think to me that is the lesson is that although it’s not easy getting out, like it’s definitely worth it, right? You don’t need me to tell you about all the reams and reams of research about getting out into nature and doing different things because you already know it, right? We all do. But I don’t know, maybe if you watch this, you might have a think about what you could do. And what I will say is that bikes are so good for this kind of stuff, aren’t they? Like, there’s no way I could walk anywhere from my house like this. And I could get in the car for sure, but it’s a heck of a lot cooler just pedaling. It’s so much more relaxing, so much quieter. So, yeah, that was absolutely wicked. Oh, I said as well, I had a secret weapon. Where is it? I can’t tell you how excited I am about this. Check it out. So, I was in Finland last week and I was thinking, I wonder what happened to Nokia. This is what happened to Nokia. This is the Nokia 105. And this, I think, is going to be absolutely revolutionary. The one thing I would say about any micro adventure is leave your smartphone at home, right? And I get that if I was out for an overnight or even now, like so used to being contactable that I wouldn’t feel comfortable being up here and my family not being able to get hold of me. But I know for a fact that if I had my iPhone here, I’d be sat on Instagram or looking at, I don’t know, pro cycling stats or something. But this this is the answer. Cost me £13.99. Got a pay as you go contract, which means that I’m not going to pay anything. And do you know how long the battery lasts? Have a guess. Nope. 22 days. Oh my word. 22 days. It’s the future right here. So, there we go. Speaking of future, should tell you a bit about the bike. Okay. You want to hear less about the phone and more about the bike? I get it. Right. Um, we’ll start with the geometry, shall we? Of this, the new Grizzle. It’s the kind of the adventure grizzle, not the super adventure grizzle. Um, so the geometry of a bike governs how it feels to ride largely. And crucially as well, it also governs how it makes you feel as you ride it. So this is not a bike that makes you want to redline everywhere in a haze of lactate. I mean, you could do, there’s absolutely nothing stopping you, but the bike naturally doesn’t make you want to do that. So it’s a little bit more upright in the position, particularly with this shorter stem. But the bike itself is actually a little bit longer. Um, so you’ve got longer chain stays and a slightly more relaxed head angle, which means that it’s super stable, but with this shorter stem, it keeps the bike nice and agile at slower speeds. Now, that longer wheelbase makes it supremely confident descending. The rougher the better, pretty much. It’s not a bike that’s going to be phased by anything other than perhaps a criterium. Now, tire clearance has increased up to 54 mm. So, mountain bike tires basically. And you’ll see that it is covered in mounting points, so you can attach everything to this bike. It’s even got a custom front and rear racks that you can fit to it as well. Um, you’ll see I’ve got this optional frame bag here that attaches by the very neat Fidlock magnetic system. And then underneath there as well, there’s capacious onboard storage in the down tube as well. And lastly, mine has got these brand new Canyon carbon rims on here as well. So, 27 mil wide internally, so great for supporting higher volume tires. So, there we go. That is my Grizzle for today. You can have an adventure on any bike, of course you can, but this one is built for it. Okay, real life calls. I’ve got about 15 minutes to get back home, walk the dogs, feed the kids, do all that kind of stuff. But anyway, this has been an absolutely mega little morning. Hopefully, it will make you think perhaps about doing something similar. But anyway, give the video a big thumbs up if you’ve enjoyed it. And uh well, yeah, I got to go now.

  1. When was the last time you broke your routine for an adventure, big or small? Let us know in the comments!

  2. Love a little mini overnight adventure. Head out in the evening at like 930pm. Ride an hour. Find somewhere to sleep. Wake up early, ride home the long way. Back for late breakfast.

    Lovely.

  3. Si, this was very touching. Its amazing to have watched the GCN presenters maturing gracefully in front of our eyes over the years. Keep on inspiring us.

  4. This year, I was nearly done with cycling after 50 years of riding, either competitive or just training hard. I literally changed my mindset when I spoke to my friend and colleague, who was a CPN who said just enjoy riding instead of being wrapped up in pushing it. So I purchased a gravel bike and just haven't looked back. I will continue to enjoy the experience, and cycling, massively supported my mindset and wellbeing, totally sold on this way of riding. Still will be going to all the classics next year will always love them. Great content again Si.

  5. This is brilliant. I completely agree. Over the last few years I've developed a two-wheeled micro-adventure habit. My recent thing is to take a mini smokeless firepit and ride to the beach. Ride to Beach, Beer, Book and Burn at sundown. Absolutely lovely. I also rode (motorbike) to Cheddar Gorge to make a cup of tea and some noodles on a stove and headed back. I also like riding to the woods and making tea with a Kelly Kettle. Planning on going somewhere nice with the means to make a hot drink is underrated as a mental health pastime. I try and squeeze in a couple of mini adventures a week during the summer.

  6. Looks like the beginning of a very good niche of the channel. Finally a man gets some attention for his midlife.
Not everything in this channel has to revolve around speed and epics.
    More please.

  7. I love the direction of the channel to be broadly about cycling with a lean towards road bikes. It is showing a great example of how to make a bubble bigger rather than infighting about which style is “better”. Riding a bike, any bike, makes us cyclists.

  8. Not quite the same, but I am starting to get up earlier for Zwift rides. I won't be getting up at 03:45 anytime soon though, I'd need to go to bed earlier than our 7 year old daughter.
Did you notice how easily the mighty arm lifted the bike over the kissing gate? Is Si taking up the mantle left by Hulk Hogan?
The non-smart phone is a great idea, just have to catch up with the GCN videos another time.

  9. One of these days I just need to leave the HRM at home, turn off the power meter, and enjoy the ride. Almost did on a recent epic ride while in Italy…but ultimately didn’t. “Needed” those stats on the climbs! 😔

  10. Im going to take an adventure with my boyfriend.

He’s on my hardtail and I’m on my new enduro. I’m so happy being on the path with him….

  11. Seriously you guys should go on top gear style biking adventures, sometimes with unusual bikes, exploring concepts, destinations, challenges

  12. Thanks man I needed that kind of idea. I have a vacation coming up in a few weeks I'm gonna do this. Just blast off make some brew.
It's been so long for me since I've had that little get up to ride in the dark for fun. I do it all the time riding to work I'm on graveyard shift.
While it's still fun it's no adventure.
    Thanks for the idea
I'd have to say you're one of my favorites on the channel

  13. I really appreciate this video. It inspired me to reflect on the adventures I've had biking alone, embracing the beauty of nature without needing ride buddies by my side. It's wonderful to find joy in those moments. Thank you for sharing!

  14. This was a great video, ironically I wanted you to make it longer but you did not have the time. I live on the edge of a city in Mexico and it is not particularly cycling friendly, I discovered a dirt tract 2 km from my house and periodically I adventured more until I had three different gravel routes, of different distances and even when I have little time so I choose the 30 km route escaping from the traffic, the horns, the people driving too close to me but gaining the smell the clean air tranquillity and touching nature for an hour of pleasure. Your point is very valid, making a little time each day or week, to escape is better than waiting weeks for an 8 hour opportunity.

  15. Good stuff Si, it makes me recall living in the UK, a lot of brits bag it and wondered why I went there when I'm from NZ. UK has some stunning scenery and beautiful villages, you just gotta get out of the drudgery of your own little sphere and experience the nature there, it's never far away. This video epitomizes the opportunities there are

  16. Reminding us that this type of mini-adventure is possible – and easy and delightful – was such a nice treat as I head off (on my bike) to a local music festival where I'll be camping all weekend – 10 miles from my house.

  17. Great content, I've done similar rides in my community. It even reminded me that the wife & I, several times of year, approch the city that I've lived in all my life & she's lived in since she was three, like we are tourists. Good times. But at the risk of sounding quite negative, the bike is completely inappropriate for these adventures. Sure it has the mounting points, geometry, tire clearance , etc, but being carbon fiber makes it incompatable for those adventures, considering that knocks, scapes & general rougher wear that these adventures bring. Sure it can be done, especially by those with deep pockets and/or those who get bikes to ride by their employer like at GCN, but those of us masses that live in the real world, an aluminum, steel or even better, a titanium framed bike is much more appropriate.

  18. I do a 22km+ (sometimes up to 30km, one way) commute twice a week by bike. Depending on how nice the morning / evening is (or on the road works along the way), the distance will vary.
Going from Voorburg (NL) to Rotterdam, there is some rural area in between, sometimes evoking a "I'm really out there" feeling. Some other routes feel suburban though. So depending on time allowed, I do get a fair share of feeling free. But looking at people stuck in their cars, whatever the route I feel I'm the lucky one 🙂
More km's on the bike than in the car this year

  19. Thank you for this meditation on the early morning ride. In Texas, we have three months of hot summer days, 100°+ Fahrenheit (37° Celsius). My pre-dawn bike ride means that I'm outside before it gets too hot, there's almost no car traffic, the air is clean, and I have a few hours of solitude.

  20. "Micro adventure". I love it. That's what I'm going to call all my bike rides from now on! (Even if I don't have a dinky stove with me to make coffee)

  21. I have been setting my alarm for 2:45 three to five mornings every week and going for a ride for an hour or so around where i live on five or six different routes. Then getting home having a coffee and going back to bed for 3 hours. It's part of my life now and feels great, especially knowing i've done 60 mins of exercise while most of the country is still asleep!

  22. One of my favorite things to do is strap my camera bag onto my back, coffee thermos and breakfast included, and head to the local ponds to photograph the birds.

Headed out on a cycling adventure with the husband tomorrow

  23. I like to have what I call my secret vacation… It's set sometime between late August and mid-October. My GF is a school teacher and the kids are back to school.. I get to spend the week on my own!! I've made it clear to my GF that she should consider it like I'm punching out of work at 5pm so I'm not doing anything for anyone than myself. I don't talk about it to my friends either, so no one makes time available "to do stuff"… They all assume I'm working!! To me, it's one of the best weeks of the year!!

  24. More of these, please! It is not always about racing or how fast you can go… The enjoyment of getting out there is equally important! Thanks!

  25. Thanks for the heads up on the phone. I’ve been wanting a feature phone and it was good to hear a recommendation. You’ve also inspired me to go on a mini adventure
