[Music] I can actually remember the beginning of mountain biking in Ireland when there was virtually no trails. We used to go on adventures on Sundays. It’s actually amazing. Amazing kind of innocence to the thing. Yeah, it was very basic in those days. We were ragging down, you know, forest roads and building our own single track and building our own downhill tracks. It was just exciting and it was going places. You could kind of tell at that stage. It was really enticing. Really made us want to do it. The more I got into it, the more I learned about all these other Irish legends. You started to learn of all these different names who might be fast and then you’re like, “Flip, I need to try and beat that person.” You know, people start realizing, you know, this scene’s kicking off a bit. It’s it’s something pretty cool. Without all the other Irish riders there, we never would have really pushed each other that much. We went to these races for for results, you know, like we were trying to carve that path for Irish riders to be riding with people that are as quick as you. It obviously brings everybody on and that’s definitely what we had. Like see when you’re riding and everything’s linking and you don’t even have to think about it. That’s when it feels like you’re in a different bloody world in my opinion. I knew I had the speed. I knew I visualized everything. I knew I had good prep. I managed to stay on the bike um in those conditions and put down a solid run. If you actually want to be doing this as a job or not going back to school or going back to work, you you’re going to need a cop on and actually really take this seriously. I remember watching a few podiums, the races. It’s kind of like a mythical place and only the people get up there who are like gods really. as kids growing up and riding together, going out on long rides in the rain, that’s what you work towards. And for it to eventually happen, that is what you dream of every night. The Emerald Storm has been brewing from the mid ’90s. It’s the history of Irish downhill mountain biking, hamming over the bat to the younger riders, watching and experiencing them just getting faster and faster and cracking the code to become the fastest riders on the planet.
