Residents of North and West Yorkshire can now wheel, walk or cycle a refurbished two-mile stretch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, in Yorkshire.

The โ€˜missing linkโ€™ in the towpath was opened this week by the Canal & River Trust, after a renovation supported by our Net Zero Fund.

We spoke to users of the tow path, who are getting out of their cars to connect with the outdoors.

This new toe paths cover is absolutely amazing. Yeah, I think cyclists will absolutely love it for many years to come. Today I’ve been on the Le Liverpool Canal looking at this section of about a couple of miles long between North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. We funded through our net zero fund. We’ve now got a continuous all weather surface all the way from Leeds up to the county boundary. Around about a thousand people a day will be going on this path. Fantastic for commuting, for leisure, but for also for people enjoying the local nature and wildlife. people using it all the time now, but now they can use it all year round. Now they can come down with their push chairs, their bicycles. Wheelchair users will find it much more user friendly. So yeah, we’re going to see a vast increase in number of people being able to access nature, see the waterway, get out of the towns, out of the villages, into the countryside and really benefit by being by the water. Come over from Cole and then we’re just on our way back. So we decided to try along the toe path and yeah, very pleasantly surprised. Fantastic project bringing net zero and active travel together.
