Hey everyone,
I ride a 1992 Trek Multitrack 730, still completely original. I’m currently planning a gravel conversion and trying to piece together a solid setup myself.
The build I’m planning includes: • Cantilever brakes • Tiagra ST-4700 STI shifters • GRX 600 front derailleur • GRX RX400 rear derailleur
I’d like to run 45 mm tires for a more comfortable gravel setup.
I already have a nice wheelset (Velocity Cliffhanger rims with DT Swiss 350 hubs and Schwalbe G-One Overland tires), but that set is actually meant for another bike. I spent quite a bit on that custom wheel build back then, so for this Trek project, I’m looking for a more budget-friendly alternative — but still reasonably lightweight, ideally in black.
What I find really tricky is finding rims with 135 mm rear spacing that work with rim brakes and can still handle wider tires.
So I’d love to hear from you: • Which rims are you using on similar builds? • What rear spacing are you running? • What tire width do you run in the back? • How much do your rims or complete wheels weigh?
Any recommendations or experience would be super helpful — I know it’s not easy finding the right balance of compatibility, weight, and price for a retro-mod like this. Also, if you have any suggestions for complete wheelsets, I’d really appreciate it!
Cheers!
