MPs have approved plans to save British Steel’s Scunthorpe blast furnaces after an extraordinary sitting of the Commons on Saturday.
Emergency legislation giving the Government the power to instruct British Steel to keep the plant open passed the Commons unopposed.
It will now be debated by the Lords as the Government attempts to get the powers on the statute book in a single day.
Ministers took the unusual step of recalling Parliament from its Easter recess to sit on Saturday after negotiations with British Steel’s Chinese owners, Jingye, appeared to break down.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds accused the company of failing to negotiate “in good faith” after it decided to stop buying enough raw materials to keep the blast furnaces at Scunthorpe going.
He told MPs: “We could not, will not and never will stand idly by while heat seeps from the UK’s remaining blast furnaces without any planning, any due process or any respect for the consequences.
“And that is why I needed colleagues here today.”

under the order of the house today I must put the fourth with the question on third reading The question is that the bill now be read a third time The question is that the bill now be read a third time As many of that opinion say I I of the country No I think the eyes have it The eyes have it Doing nothing was not an option We could not will not and never will stand idly by while heat seeps from the UK’s remaining blast furnaces without any planning any due process or any respect for the consequences And that is why I needed colleagues here today And I’ll give But now the most important thing is we’ve got control of the site We can make the decisions about what happens Um and that means that those blast fences will stay on And I’m really pleased to come here and deliver that news uh to you And

That's the steelworks we sold to the Chinese in 2020. 🤡 show
The first decision that benefits the British people this trash of a government has had the temerity to make
An unsafe steelworks of no value
Does it make money?
We make the best steel in the world but successive governments have failed to back the industry and that's why it in the mess it is because we have sold everything that was good in this country
Why couldnt they do the same for Port Talbot. ??? Not intetested in Wales are they?
We need to open up our coal mines and stop importing coal
This is a good start.
How much have our govts given tata over the years. They took the profitable bits and sold the junk for £1. Now we're gonna start handing out cash to the Chinese.
Last chance for action. Scrap Net Zero, Agenda 2030, Nutjob Milliband and his fan club and open up British pits. Oh..and declare Climate Change to be the fraud that we know that it is.
sadly if a business is losing money and to that figure then it cannot be viable and no one in their right mind is going to buy it even at £1 so sadly the inevitable will happen job loss and no ammount of gov funding is going to make the the plant viable you cannot turn a non runner into a winner
This is in preparation for their continued war,
They don’t give a flying Hoot about the working class.
But they will expect you to encourage yours sons and daughters to fight in a foreign war.
one rule for England one rule for port talbot in wales roll on the welsh elections in 2026
They need to do the same with all Chinese owned industries before they collapse and take us with them!
Let's be honest here… This is just pantomime for Labour to save face. A 120 year old car factory in Luton closed in March and not a peep from the government. A thousand people went to the unemployment line and so now Starmer needs to appear to be doing something to tackle the rampant de-industrialisation of the UK.
Couldn't be bothered to save Grangemouth. Scotland is the only oil producing country in the world that doesn't have a refinery. England produces just 8.4% of the UKs oil but has 6 refineries.
There's 4 letters in Scunthorpe which describe sir keir down to a T !!
And mealy mouthed platitudes for Grangemouth.
Brit trash save their own but leave the filthy sponging Sweaty Socks’ Grangemouth refinery to closure. The stupidity of Unionists has been made abundant again and again and again; but still they’ll vote Labour so they can keep the Union Jack and weird Royal Family.
Bust in days then
LIAR-BOUR COMMUNIST PARTY were already embedded with the COMMUNIST UNIONS and the COMMUNIST CHINESE
This is the uk government, i.e. England, (the united kingdoms of England). Cymru and Alba are not part of this, although our taxes goes to that foreign government in England.
British government should take back everything from foreign owners and bring back all call centres from India. Here in Uk we have man power to run everything ourselves
Funny how there are elections coming up, no suspect timing going on here. They could have done something ages ago but chose not to.
Bribery
Privatisation has always been a failure, and yet another way to funnel public funds to the rich.
Nationalise our public services, stop the corporate bailouts.
I can categorically promise you that this steel plant will close. The Government haven't got a clue.
It's no surprise that they cant find the materials to keep the blast furnaces running. they run on coal, the government gleefully cheered the destruction of the UK coal industry. now we will have to import it. same issues regarding national security arise if we need to import coal from a foreign nation
