today I’m going to be traveling with cross country on one of the class 221 super voyages from Abedine to Penzance this is the UK’s longest train journey it takes over 13 hours to complete and I’m going to be riding in standard class i am very much looking forward to it hey everyone Gloves Trains here i’ve just checked out of the Premier Inn here in Abedine and it is nearly time for me to do the long ride from Abedine to Penzance it’s one of those train rides it’s just got to be done right especially now since as of the May 2025 timetable change this service is no longer going to be running all the way through to Penzance it is going to be cut off at Plymouth so yeah I’m getting in there whilst I still can i am just making me way to Abodine station and uh I will pop to the shop and get some food and drink there probably will be a catering trolley on the train but yeah I’ll get stocked up as much as I [Music] can ret I’ve got some food and drink let’s go head on into the station [Music] well here it is the train I’m about to spend 13 hours and 11 minutes on it’s 221 120 at least it’s a five coach Voyager and there’s still about 20 minutes before it departs yet but yeah you know what i’m going to head on and get myself a seat right I’m on and I am making this journey today in standard class i booked about a month and a half ago and it cost me just £45.75 with a rail card and yeah I wasn’t going to be paying over 120 quid more to go first class cuz that would have cost me £168.95 but when you book your ticket on Cross Country’s website you can’t select the exact seat you wish to reserve but you can put um like your preferences in so I put forward facing window seat and what seat did I get given that one right there that backwards facing aisle seat but that seat is in this section at the back of coach C which uh also has some completely unreserved seats so I have just sat myself down in one of those somebody else can sit in my reserve seat if they so wish but yeah I’m going to get myself settled down here got a fold down table plug socket down here hook up there and a window blind happy days and so the long journey began we departed Abedine on time at 0820 and the train wasn’t all that busy there were still a good few seats available now this 13-hour 11minute journey will see us making 39 intermediate stops before arriving into Penzance at a scheduled time of 2131 [Music] i am also glad to be sitting on the left hand side of the train as I’ll be able to see the coastal views i did actually have a ride along the Dundee to Abedine line yesterday and the day before but I am once again going to admire these [Music] [Music] views so it turns out the whole of Coach B is unreserved on this service i mean I’m happy in this seat now but yeah it is handy that just got myself a coffee off the trolley cost me £240 and uh I do love these cross country cups you know I have already got one of these in me train cup collection mind you [Music] [Music] we’re just making a stop at Dundee and I’ve already been on this train for over an hour so yeah I’m over a 13th of the way there honestly it’s flying by i’ll be in Pensance in no time from Dundee we entered onto the Dundee to Edinburgh line and once again had fantastic views as we crossed over the River Tay on the Tay Bridge it’s a 2.75 mile bridge that brings the train out at Wmit in F unfortunately I’m running very low on hot drink tonight i think I won’t got enough hot water left for a couple and then that’ll be me out hot drink so one best we should eat anything off the hot drinks i will be coming back to hopefully after any but for the time being is a soft drinks and snack service located in coach F the front end of the train a few minutes after calling at inving the train passed through North Queens Ferry station and just after that the train was surrounded by more breathtaking views we are entering onto the fourth bridge now which is going to take us over the fur of fourth from North Queens Fairy to South Queens Fairy and I had a day last year riding trains in F and I got off at North Queens Ferry and went to have a look at the fourth bridge from the ground and yeah it is an amazing structure next stop [Music] we’ve just pulled into Edinburgh Waverly we do sit on the platform here for 14 minutes and quite a few people have just gotten off the train but equally I think quite a few people are waiting to get on can feel me legs starting to tighten up so just giving them a stretch and the train is running along the East Coast mainline now so we’ve got some more beautiful sea views out there [Music] and we are now crossing the border from Scotland into England it wasn’t too long ago since I was out there having a walk along the Bericure coastal path to the highest point in England it was a lovely walk that one [Music] upon leaving Beric upon Tweed the iconic Royal Border Bridge carried us over the river Tweed [Music] at Newcastle the Voyager became full not full and standing just full [Music] we crossed over the river Tine on the King Edward IIIth Bridge which is one of the seven bridges here in Newcastle and again this is another railway bridge I absolutely love traveling along so I was just thinking the longest ride I’ve had with cross country prior to this one was the one I had uh from Manchester to Payton which took just over 5 hours and towards the end of that journey I did start to become a bit restless and I was uh kind of happy to get off the train when I did so yeah I thought I may end up feeling the same way being on this train today but do you know what i’ve been on here for over five hours now and I’m feeling great and if you’re wondering what post is up in the toilet it’s a whip my gate one still need to go to whip my gate the service was pretty much on time as we began running along the route between York and Bristol Temple Me which is known as the cross country route we’re just on the approach into Sheffield now the time is 14:51 and I think Sheffield actually marks the halfway point as if we’re halfway through the journey already i have pretty much just spent the whole time looking out of the window as long as I’ve got a window I’m entertained but I have also brought a word search boat with me just in case I need it so yeah might do some of those soon i gave me legs a quick stretch as we were pulled in at Sheffield before me next boarded i enjoyed looking out to the greenery as we made our next couple of stops at Derby and Burton on Trent yeah it sure looked like a lovely day out there trust the weather to warm up as soon as I decide to spend the whole day on a train eh [Music] we were due to have an 8 minute wait here at Birmingham New Street but uh we are a few minutes late pulling in but the usual thing that happens at Birmingham New Street is happening now lots of people are getting off the train and lots of people are getting on it again though it wasn’t full and standing on the train after leaving New Street it just remained [Music] full the next stop is Bristol Temple Me and me mate Soapie Muffins is in Bristol today and she has asked me if I want her to drop anything off for me but to be honest the only thing I’m in need of right now is a leg massage yeah it’s been a while since I’ve stood up but um yeah I’m soon to see how stiff my legs are sorry about the slight there is a bit congestion in Bristol T station few services just leaving now should go running into the platform very shortly instead of having a 15minute wait at Temple Me we only had a 3minute one but I did have a bottle of water dropped off for me and we left on time i had a great chat with my neighbor during the next 45 minutes we talked about Cardiff and the valleys and scenic train rides we’d had but from us being back on schedule timewise we ended up being 11 minutes delayed arriving into Taton the delay went up to 12 minutes but started to drop back down as we reached [Music] exit the views are sensational along the exit to Plymouth line we ran right alongside the river X to where it meets the sea and then right next to the Dish sea wall which runs from Dishw Warren to Dish i definitely need to walk along that wall one [Music] day well it’s 10 to 8 we’re just leaving Plymouth going to be traveling along the Cornish mainline all the way through now to Penzads and with this service being cut back to Plymouth in a few weeks from me making this journey today I did expect it to quieten down a lot on this train cuz yeah it has been full pretty much the entire journey so far and happy days i can stretch out a bit more now cuz yeah most people uh did get off at Plymouth a few people got on but yeah it is the quietest it’s been the whole journey we’re just crossing over the River Tamar on the Royal Albert Bridge look at that flowing water got the start of the sunset there as well oh it’s [Music] beautiful one hour to go heat heat [Music] we’re at the penultimate stop of Saintf oh so close got just 10 minutes left and once we leave here I will try and spot St michael’s Mount although it is pretty dark out there now our next and final call on this service will be Penzat nah can’t say a thing well thank you all for traveling with us today and wish you all a safe onward journey and here we are we’ve made it hello Penzance the train arrived in 3 minutes late oh it feels amazing to be here right now and also to get some fresh air i think uh I need to get a bit of movement back in me legs though so yeah I’m gonna head on now to me hotel ah that’s handy the premier in is right across from the station ah yes I am taking off another premiere in whilst I’m here i feel such a sense of achievement right now after having ridden all the way from Abedine down to Penzance and do you know what i thought I would be knackered out after having spent over 13 hours sitting on a train looking out of the window but I’m really quite awake i feel great honestly so glad I got to ride that service before it goes thank you very much for watching everyone bye

Love your accent. What is it?
Thanks for an amazing video. My Dad (who is no longer with us, sadly) was a big fan of trains, so he would have loved this. I know he took some long trips in his time, but not this one. Thank you, G, this was really interesting. I don't use trains much, but this year I've had several concerts and trips in the south, and have loved using the trains – except the hated Lichfield to London Euston, and having to stand all the way more than once!!
How much did it cost i rekon st least 200 quid
It's actually a longer trip from Penzance to Aberdeen because it's all uphill.
Brilliant video thanks for sharing it x
Loved watching this G, as always! What a journey! Could I be cheeky and ask if there is a link to your BBC appearance? x
Another brilliant vlog G,but I
11hr journey, how did you decide when to do some filming? Stay safe.😊
Glad you got to do it. Great video. Lovely views
Lovely G, although I'm here to both praise and criticise…politely. First the criticism, when you mentioned close to crossing the border that you had been on the highest point in England, I'm sure that what you actually meant was you'd been on the most northerly point in England, or put another way, the 'highest' point of England when looking at a map. Sorry for being such a pedant. As for the trip, it looked fabulous and was one that I had been looking at doing for a few years although I've never got round to it. I knew nothing of the fact that it was due to finish until I heard about it on the news so I'll now never get the chance. As for the wall at Dawlish, as a rail enthusiast you have to do that as it is fabulous. It can be done in either direction although I would suggest walking from Teignmouth station via Dawlish to Dawlish Warren station. Just don't go when it's windy and the tide is in…Thanks, and keep up the good work.
I only travelled on Crosscountry trains twice.
The first time back in 2019 it was horrendous as I did stand up for 3h whilst having booked a seat months in advance.
Last time it was in 2024 between Birmingham New Street and Stansted Airport where I was in one of the most crammed seats I have ever sat at (my kneecap was touching the tray table). The only positive feature was the lovely watersids views around Ely
I would love to take such long journeys by rail, living in a country where there are no railways at all, but definitely (and sadly) will not take any CrossCountry train ever again
Highest point in England is Scafell pike in the Lake District
Hello All,me too, today i"ll going from York to Newcatle, but not in UK,i will drive again locomotive Class 37 in train simulator 2013 pc.
I seen u that day
I stay in Aberdeen but a lovely day
Epic journey, I used to live in Aberdeenshire and I now wish I had done that journey 👍👏👍
If I have spotted you on a train does that mean I found your G spot 😅
We always love your positivity, and like your accent.
On our last trip to UK we did 141 train trips in 3 months, but not the 11+hour one. Longest was Dundee to Kings Cross, about 6 hours I think, I haven’t got my log book to hand.
Longest day was in 2010: Aberystwyth-Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury to Chester, Chester to Lime Street, Lime Street to Wolverhampton and finally Wolverhampton to Bournemouth. We left Aberystwyth about 0800 and got to Bournemouth at 2210.
I am sure you could link up a few trips similar to that.
Well done!
I'd gladly give you a massage anytime 😊
Thanks!
What a marathon ride. Thanks for doing this so that I don't have to, though the coastal views look really enticing.
Awesome. Well done
Got to have tasty snacks for good train journey. Whats ya favourite Snacks to have Gloves Trains?
Thank you for this video
I’ve just watched your video, I see you travelled the same day as I made the trip. Unlike you I did pay £168 for 1st class, I couldn’t face sitting on a XC train for 13 hours. Not withstanding I’m 6’4” tall I had no trouble with stiffness, I made a point of getting off the train at every stop which felt like every 10 minutes. Whilst I didn’t see myself in the film I did see the couple who I shared a table seat with entering the Premier Inn just before you. All the best Graham.
You did well to last that incredible amount of time in standard class seats on those 222’s ! 13 hours on a hard and pretty uncomfortable seat… I used to get a really sore back after an hour and half on those things…. Can’t wait until the new 800 series replaces them on the MML. Great video 👍👍
Just a shame the longest train journey in the uk is with cross country
Aberzance is no more
Just a shout out, only just discovered this channel and as a fellow young enthusiast it’s really heartening seeing someone carrying the torch. 13hrs on a cross country voyager you’re a brave lass haha! Sheffield to Leeds is enough!
