*Chapters:*
We’re exploring Scotland’s stunning capital, and we’ve got just one day to do it. From medieval castles, and some seriously good eats to historic alleyways, sweeping views, and of course, whiskey, we’re packing it all in to make the most of one unforgettable day. And if you’re new around here, we’re Matt and Nat, and we’ve spent the last 4 years traveling the world as part-time non- remote travelers. After accomplishing our goal of visiting all 50 US states in 2021, we’ve set out on our next big adventure to see as many of the 10,000 places to see before you die. Well, before we die. In our last video, we were on a Scottish Highlands road trip where we took in the majestic views of Glenco, search for the elusive Loch Ness Monster, and ended our day with traditional Scottish food and music. This week, we’re in Edinburgh. Traveling abroad used to mean hunting down SIM cards, paying outrageous roaming fees, or just hoping for decent Wi-Fi. But thanks to today’s sponsor, Sim Local, you can skip the stress and stay connected the moment you land. So that means no shops, no delays, just instant mobile data. Sim Local offers affordable prepaid eSIM plans that keep you connected without the hassle. You just download the Sim Local app, pick your destination and plan, and follow the stepbystep install guide. It’s quick and beginner friendly. Plans start at less than a dollar per gig. Or you can get up to 80 gigs for just $19. And every plan includes talk, text, hotspot access, and coverage through EE, which is the UK’s fastest mobile network available exclusively to travelers through Simlo. It’s one of the easiest ways to stay connected while traveling, and most of their UK plans even include up to 18 gigabytes of roaming across Europe at no extra cost, which is perfect if you’re planning a multi-country adventure. So, click the link in the description or scan the QR code on the screen and use our code matin at checkout to save on your eim plan with Sim Local. Welcome to Edinburgh. As the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh is a cultural hub for the country with its old and new town being a designated UNESCO World Heritage site with nearly 4,500 individual buildings, monuments, and conservation areas. And while the city is home to more than 500,000 people, it somehow feels quaint and charming with its medieval streets, stunning architecture, and cozy cafes around every corner. But if you’d like more information and recommendations for planning your Edinburgh adventures, check out our blog. The link is down in the description. But first things first, let’s go get some caffeine. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] It’s buttery. It’s flaky. It’s messy. It’s got to be good. And it is. I asked for the cinnamon roll mistakenly thinking this was that. It is a pecan caramel roll with cinnamon in it. So, and I’m not mad at it. It’s good. I on the other hand got a almond croissant and it is going to be so messy. Mhm. Oh, yeah. It just went everywhere. This is so good though. It was packed in here by the way. And we chose probably the most popular coffee shop touristy spot in town. But it was on the way to our next spot. So, the latte is delicious by the way. Oh, my chai. Hold on. It’s a little tiny for 3.6 3.6 pound. Uh oh. It takes a second sip. Give it a five. It’s a little different. Not very sugary, which is fine. It’s got another kind of flavor in it. I’ll figure it out. But um a five. Kind of tastes like throat Coke. Maybe a licorice or something. Yeah, it has something like that in like a mow root or something. But we did find two seats together, so that’s good. [Music] [Music] So, this milkman is very iconic just because of the building, but it is very tiny and has like three seats, I think, which is why we went to the one that’s not even a couple hundred yards down the street. Same street, same food, same coffee, and you actually have seating. But then you can come right up the road and get your photos and get a look at the more iconic one. [Music] So, we’re now on the Royal Mile headed to our next destination. And the Royal Mile is like the epicenter of all the action in the old town of Edinburgh. Now, we are going to be exploring this area a little bit later. So, we’re not going to talk about it all right now, but we do recommend that you do a free walking tour as soon as you get to Edinburgh because then you get to learn a lot. Yes. And it gives you a little bit of the lay of the land. We’ll put a link down in the description for the walking tour that we did and some others that we recommend. And we learned so much. Like an alley here is called a close. So you’ll see all of these like closes. Yes. And if it looks like a close is like closed, like you might not should go down it or really like not that welcoming, just walk down it. There’s probably a beautiful courtyard or a whole another part of town that you never would have found without taking that close. [Music] So pre-booking tickets is absolutely absolutely necessary for this experience. We would say to skip the line, but all these other people bought tickets online and they’re waiting in line as well. So, so you might not get skip the line privileges with your pre-book tickets, but I think you do save a little bit of money and you guarantee yourself a spot to go see one of the most popular and kind of mustos in Edinburgh, the Edinburgh Castle. [Music] Hello. Thanks so much, Sunny. [Music] Fun fact, that’s Braveheart. We learned that on the walking tour. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Guys, I messed up. All right, so the tip here is to buy the online audio guide. It’s £350. You download it to your phone and then you can use like you’ve seen us probably do in other videos. We’ll share a pair of AirPods and we’ll be able to listen to one audio guide between the two of us. I didn’t charge my AirPods and I didn’t bring mine. Mine are charged in the hotel room. So, so anyways, we had to buy the little cell phone thing. So, we’ll be listening separately today. But thankfully, they do let you use one of their devices if you purchased online and you want to use the device rather than your phone. You can plug headphones into these if you want. Otherwise, we’ll just be listening like this. Now, let’s get to exploring Edinburgh Castle. I hear that there are crown jewels here, and I’m so excited. I already feel like I’m in an episode of Game of Thrones just walking through the gates. So wild. [Music] [Music] I love that you can hear bag pipes playing off in the distance. It’s just It feels like you’re in a movie set. It really does. I mean, absolutely beautiful. I am pretty obsessed with Edinburgh and we’ve just started exploring. [Music] It’s sunny. We were not expecting this weather today. No, it’s been a little rainy and cloudy and cold. It’s like 30°. I think the high today is going to be 56, which I’m pretty excited about. Be nice. But I’m so happy about this sun. Inside this tiny chapel, generations of royalty have knelt in prayer. [Music] Put your hand. It’s so good. [Music] So, we’re off to our next couple of stops on the audio guide. Number 22 is next, which is the Royal Palace. And number 23 is what Tanali’s been looking forward to the most. If you couldn’t guess, the Scottish Crown Jewels. Let’s go. I’m so excited. Sorry guys. So, we got to see the crown jewels. There was one crown, one scepter, and two swords. One was brand new. It was 17 lb, and the other one’s like 5 lb. They were impressive. I was surprised that there was only one of each, but it’s more than I have. So, now we’re going to go see where Mary, Queen of Scots, gave birth in her royal apartments. But who’d she give birth to? King James. Yes. Yeah. Sounds a pretty important thing. Like, King of all of England. That is true. [Music] So, we just checked out the royal palace. We got to see the hall. We also got to see where James the 6th but also the first of England. Anyways, he was like the king of all of them. Mary, Queen of Scott’s son. Yeah. He went to become king of England and Ireland. And then they say the royal blood is from that line, right? To this day. The English line is actually a Scottish line. Yep. What we’re told anyway. All interwined. Anyways, what was really cool is we got to check out like your last name, your surname to see where it’s from. And our last name, Houston, is a Scottish name. There’s a bazillion different spellings of it, but it comes from the town of Houston, which is near Glasco. Yeah. So, I think we’re going to have to come back to Scotland and go check out Houston. That would be pretty cool. Maybe actually do like a ancestry tour and see where we came from or where I came from and where you married into. I married into and then we’ll check out the green side in Ireland at some point. So, Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] These are a bit tall for me. I can’t see unless I have a little window. Well, yeah. They were here to protect you from arrows coming up, spears, guns later on. Yeah, but what about you? You’d be killed. No, they’d have to be shooting from that hill over there cuz I can’t even see the ground nowhere close to it. I can see now. [Music] This is why you get here early. Our reservation was for 9:30 this morning. We’re now coming up on noon and it is packed. Some choice scallic words and phrases such as staff gavesk. Did you get some cast which means busy. It’s very trang here. All right. So, that was so much fun. I am definitely a little chilly. There’s a lot more walking around outside than indoor activities. Yes, a whole lot of outdoor stuff. But it’s really beautiful. The castle is definitely more focused towards the military side because that’s mostly what its use has been throughout the centuries. We really enjoyed it. The audio tour was a little bit lacking. It didn’t cover a lot of details. So, you get to a spot and it would kind of cover the basics and then you were on your own to explore the rest of that area. I think it was still worth it for sure. Yeah, it was definitely worth the £3 pound50 or whatever. Yeah. And a visit to the castle is more than worth it for sure. I do wish that they would have had more things in the palace. That’s just me. But again, definitely recommend. [Music] These phone booths are original to the castle, obviously. 1500s. We didn’t see any of them working in London. So, these actually work. Look at that. Look at that. Oh, I don’t think it does. [Music] [Applause] One of my favorite views of Edinburgh is the esplanade here at the Edinburgh Castle. You literally can see almost everything on a clear day. Oh, yeah. And it’s free to come and experience. Yeah. [Music] The Royal Mile is a historic street that runs through the heart of Edinburgh’s old town, connecting two of the city’s most important landmarks. Edinburgh Castle at the top, which we just left, and the Palace of Holy Rude House at the bottom. And it’s actually a little bit more than a mile, about 1.1 miles, but it got its name from being the traditional route of royal processions. Along the Royal Mile, you’ll find a mix of historic sites, shops, pubs, and hidden alleys, which, as we said earlier, are called closes, making it one of the most iconic streets in all of the city. Let’s go. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Let’s talk about the bag pipes playing in the background. Don’t know if you can hear them, but they just kind of echo through the streets of Edinburgh. Now, back behind us here is one of the oldest buildings here in Edinburgh. It’s called Gladston’s Land. So, when you’re taking a stroll down the Royal Mile, be sure to stop and just take a glance at it. And the windows, you’ll notice. Yeah. So, half of them are glass. The upper half is glass, and then the lower half are actually wood shutter kind of thing. Exactly. Little doors. Cuz the windows didn’t open back then. The glass windows didn’t open. And what they would do is they would throw out their chamber pots out of those wood windows or get fresh air. I don’t know how much fresh air there was to get since the name of this town was Old Reeky. Yeah. It was because it rire back then. It’s still called that sometimes. just as a term of endearment, but back then it just didn’t smell good. Love me some fun bags. [Music] We’re getting postcards for our patrons who are an incredible group of people who support our channel. And if you want to become part of our Patreon family and get goodies like this, definitely check out the link down in the description. We would love to have you part of the family. [Music] I don’t know if it’s a national cookie, but we’re going to say it is. Shortbread in Scotland is 10 out of 10. Recommend. The best I’ve ever had, I would say. So good. [Music] What did you get? Along with the goodies for our patrons, I got some goodies for myself. So, you know, I couldn’t say no. Are we eating lunch in like an hour? Yes. But are they going to have shortbread at lunch? Probably not. So, got like a sugar coating around the edge of the shortbread. Let’s give them a try. [Music] I kind of forgot what a fan I am of shortbread. Or maybe it’s just Scottish shortbread. It is delicious. The little sugar crystals on the outside add a little bit of crunch to it. So buttery. This will be a nice little snack while we walk the rest of the Royal Mountain. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Another [Music] little fun story for you while we eat our shortbread. This right here, Deacon Brody, he is the inspiration for the book Jacqueline Hyde. Yeah. So, he apparently, just like Jackalyn Hyde, had two sides to him. Um during the day they say that he would like help people repair their locks and fix things and then in the night he would go and break into those locks and steal their things because he had a gambling addiction. Yeah. So So kind of a um iconic name here in Edinburgh. Mhm. So you can go to this little place. He also has his house you can go visit. And the writer of Jackalyn Hyde, he’s in the writer museum. Pretty cool. [Music] These three brass plates right here on the corner of the street mark the site of the last public execution in Edinburgh. It was George Bryce who was a murderer and he was executed here on June 21st of 1864. So, if you couldn’t tell, we learned a lot on our walking tour. But back behind us here is a well. You’ll see them all up and down the Royal Mile. Some of them are decorated with spouts for horses. Some of them are more ornate than others, but keep an eye out for those when you’re walking down this street. [Music] I’m realizing that I don’t know if I would have survived in the Middle Ages living in a castle. soul cuz it’s drafty and cold. Yeah, you you’d have been the one that was like dying of tuberculosis or some sort of sickness due to the drafty conditions. That is cold, man. [Music] So, when you’re in front of St. Guile’s Cathedral, you’ll see a heart-shaped made out of stones. And so, the first day we were here, I made Matt stand in the middle of it and kiss me. And then we found out that it’s not great. No, it’s more customary to spit on the center of the heart. Um, I can’t remember the exact reasons, but I do know that it is at the site approximately of where the doors to the old jail were. So, so yeah, fun fact, you can kiss on it like we did or spit on it. You let us know in the comments what you do. If you look, you can see spit on heart as we’re standing here. [Music] So, in about 30 seconds, we should be hearing the 1:00 gun going off from the castle. Maybe that’s why they have the bells go off early, cuz they’re, like I said, about 30 seconds early. Isn’t it a cannon? Cannon gun. Something like that. That was it. It was very quiet. Well, especially this far. It was like a somebody hit something. It’s like sound like somebody kicked a door. Cool. We heard it. So, back behind me here is Mary King’s clothes. If you saw our Seattle video, you’ll know that there was like a town underneath the city of Seattle. We’re just going to keep building up. And that’s exactly what happened with Edinburgh. So, you can go down into these streets and people like lived there for like a long time. And it looks really cool and incredible. They didn’t have any times for us. So, make sure you guys book them in advance and let us know how it was down in the comments. Also, yes, the correct way to say the name of this town or city is Edinburgh. Yes, it looks like similar to what we would see in the name Pittsburgh in the US, but it is not Edinburg. It is not Edinburgh. It is Edinburgh. Fun facts. Correct us if we’re wrong, but I’m pretty certain that’s right. That’s what we’ve been told at least. Right here is where they would go he and then read out on the scroll right here. [Music] Good luck. Supposedly rubbing his big toe brings good luck. That’s why it’s so shiny. I do it with my gloves on. Look at that. Only fan. [Music] All right. Now on to lunch. Sounds like a great plan to me. [Music] I got a nice cold glass of Iron Brew. If you watched our Caledonian Sleeper Train video, you know I had it for the first time ever in their lounge. But now that I know it’s a Scottish thing, I knew I had to have it with lunch today. Even our server today said he has no idea what the flavor is. It’s just good. So, cheers. Yeah, it’s just good. I still say it’s some kind of cream soda. I’ve heard people say it’s a ginger something. Again, nobody really knows. My favorite fact about it was that Coke is like number one in pretty much every country except for Scotland. I am brew number one. Good for you guys. And I ordered an apple teaser. I asked our waiter what it was and if it was from here and he said anywhere he’s gone. They haven’t had it. So I maybe. So I don’t know. But I’m pretty excited about it. It’s supposed to be like apple juice with a little sparkle in there. I could do without the ice today if I’m being honest. This tart gets you back there. It’s like Granny Smith. Delightful. You got to try it. It says it’s from Brussels. Belgium, but I don’t know. So, the concept here at Mackers’s Mash where we’re at for lunch is that you order a meat or main. They also have vegetarian options and then a mash. They have a wide selection of different mashed potatoes with different flavors infused in them and all that kind of stuff. But for my meal, I got the slowcooked beef shoulder with a rich horseradish infused gravy. And by our waiter’s recommendation, I went with the applewood smoked cheddar mashed potatoes. And if you know me, you know I love mashed potatoes. and I’m excited to be here. I ordered the slowcooked lamb shank with infused tomato, rosemary, and red wine sauce. I got the basic classic Scottish mashed potatoes. Pretty excited about it. This is dairy butter on it. I’m excited about this. You see the steam coming off of this? Oh man. Oh yeah. You can see how tender that beef is. It just literally falls apart with the pork. The mashed potatoes are nice and creamy. Just a touch of smokiness from that applewood smoked cheese. And then the gravy is just heavenly. That’s wonderful. He’s going in for a second. I’m starting with my salad on the side cuz I’m a healthy girl. Oh, it’s like a cabbage sloth. Very vinegary. probably help balance out all of the richness of the gravy and mashed potatoes or whatever. It’s really good. I’m going to try this one, too. One’s a little sweeter. I’m okay. Oh, wow. That’s so tender. We don’t even need a knife. I’m just going to do the meat first. Oh my god. Incredible. You can definitely taste the rosemary infused meat. Mashed potatoes. Delightful. I was a little nervous cuz it’s a tomato sauce and I usually like brown gravy, but this place is hitting the spot. make your reservations like we made reservations and people are still having to wait. So, can’t recommend it enough. I’m so excited. [Music] Very different with the tomato based gravy or sauce. Adds a good bit more acidity than mine has with this brown gravy with it. But the lamb shank itself is as tender as you can get. So delicious. [Music] The lunch was absolutely delicious. Really good, guys. I can totally see why this place is popular. Now that we’ve got something on our stomachs, let’s go try some scotch whiskey. Let’s go. Thank you, guys. Have a good one. All [Music] right, we’ve made it just in time for our tour. Let’s get into it. Welcome to the Scotch Whiskey Experience. It’s my pleasure to take you through a journey on how we make single mold scotch whiskey. I thought we were moving cuz it was like very immersive. I started getting motion sick. I know. It was cool. all the experts in Scotch whiskey by now. Scratch and sniff. We will start off in the lowlands. That iconic smoky flavor that Isa’s so well known for. [Music] Heat. Heat. N. [Music] Sanjiva. Enjoy. [Music] Whiskey tasting time. [Music] Everything in between. This looks American. I’m going with American. American. Yeah. Very light in color. This is excellent. Give it a swirl. This is lunch. [Music] This is Glen. Just don’t success. [Music] What? Whiskey tea. What does it smell like? Feels like it’s like a Japanese tea or something. It smells really good. Oh, look. They’ve got a bunch of teas. [Music] Guys, that was such a fun, immersive experience. We were running late if you couldn’t tell. We literally had to go straight into the room. They were like, “Any 230s gold?” And we’re like, “Yeah, that’s us. That’s us.” And they started immediately. So, get in. It started very promptly cuz we were actually 2 minutes early. Oh, were we? Yeah, we were. We weren’t running late. But yeah, it was a great experience. I can see why some people would refer to this as Malt Disney World. Um cuz it’s kind of like if you’ve ever done or even watched our Ireland videos, but if you’ve ever done the Guinness Storehouse experience in Ireland, it’s kind of a much smaller scale version of that for scotch whiskey, but it was a really cool experience with kind of the immersive aspect to it. So, definitely recommend it. It was really well done. I learned a lot. We got to try a bunch of things. We definitely recommend going with the gold option because we did get to try a bunch of different We got to taste a total of five. Yeah, we got to taste a total of five different whisies from all of the different regions which was really awesome. Yeah, we booked our tickets uh with Get Your Guide. We’ll put a link for that booking down in the description cuz you’ll definitely want to book your tickets ahead. Now, let’s go back out in the cold. Was that rain? No, I hope it was a chamber pot. Oh god. I hope it was rain. I hope it was a chamber pod. You know what? Get those shortbread cookies out. [Music] Yay. I hope I didn’t crush him. I leaned against the wall earlier and heard. [Music] It’s probably supposed to only do that with drinks. I’m sure people will let us know in the comments, but [Music] we might as well last two [Music] again. We got the Scottish bag pipes playing in the background. We are finished with our Scottish shortbread. Life is good. I don’t know what else we could ask for really. Even if it was raining, which I hope it it doesn’t, but we had a couple little drops. We are now headed to another famous street. Yeah, very colorful one. That was a clue. [Music] So, we’re now on Victoria Street, which has supposedly inspired JK Rowling for Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley. Oh, I could see that. Yeah, it’s very colorful. Lots of little shops and bars and restaurants here. Perfect place to come for a late afternoon stroll. Exactly like we’re doing. What do they call a late afternoon stroll in Galick? GI. I think it’s saying garlic but in a different accent. I’m like garlic. It is a golden hour stroll is a strag. Yeah, we’re stra. We’re stragging right now. Stagan. Maybe not the same emphasis that I did, but [Music] So, if you’re a Harry Potter fan, Victoria Street is where you need to be. Edinburgh as a whole. Really? Honestly, they Oh, yeah. They’ve got a Gryffindor hoodie outfit over there. There’s also a museum that you literally have to wait in line for. Yes. And they sell like officially licensed merchandise. The Elephant Cafe says this is the birthplace of Harry Potter, which I don’t know really about, but they do sell butterbeer, but it’s butterscotch beer cuz they can’t say butterbeer. Yeah. But yeah, this place is really, really cool. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] So, it seems like we’re on a Harry Potter roll right now, but we’re at Gray Frier’s Cemetery, and JK Rowling got a lot of her inspiration for the names of Harry Potter books, or like characters in the books from the cemetery. Yep. So, we’re going to go look for at least one of the graves, right? Yeah, there’s Moody, a Tom Riddle, Potter, McGonagal. I think there’s more, so let me know down in the comments. But it’s super cool. She was just like roaming around, roaming around the ground, getting inspo [Music] [Applause] If you want to do a Harry Potter walking tour, they have plenty of those. Yes. A huge group just left the Tom Riddle. They were all wearing their like plaid skirts. The guys had their plaid and flannel shirts on like all the different color houses. Yeah, it was cute. Thomas Riddle. Bad Boy Lord Baltimore task. [Music] Crazy. They had to put bars over graves to prevent the grave robbers from coming in and stealing the bodies. and selling them to the anatomy classes, I guess, at the colleges in the area. I’m sure this happened all over the world, but that’s just wild. [Music] Matt just asked me, have we ever roamed a cemetery before in one of our videos? And I think it’s a first. As I said, I don’t think we have. So only fitting cuz Edinburgh loves their kind of like gothic kind of Halloweeny type stuff. So they do a lot of ghost tours here. A lot of those. A lot of evening tours like night walking tours. They do so many of them. Many of them involve coming to the cemeteries. Yeah. At night. Ooh. [Music] I’m a little disappointed we didn’t find the potter on a tombstone, but there is the cutest little dog statue that I’m pretty excited about. So, the legend is that there’s a dog, his name was Bobby. Is that right? And his owner passed away and was buried in the grave cemetery. Well, Bobby hung around and stayed with his owner for 14 years after his passing. Never left his side. Slept on the grave. hung out on the grave until he passed again 14 years later. They now have a monument statue outside and you can rub his little nose for good luck, I guess. [Music] He’s [Music] using our whiskey glasses. Just a hint of scotch. No, there’s not. People watching is one of our favorite activities. And we found this cute little I think it’s called grass market. And it’s very interesting. We’ve seen a lot already. We found us a bench. We plop down and we’re just taking in the sights and the sounds and the entertaining people. [Music] [Music] Guys, so much happened. A busker yelled at some tourists for taking a photo and video, which we have our own opinion about that. Like, they’re kind of in public places. I get it. It’s the common courtesy. So if you want to take a photo and stuff, I get it. But also he also judged how much they put in the thing. Yeah, he was he like yelled at him for not giving anything and so pressured him to. Then they gave something and then he wasn’t good enough and it wasn’t good enough and he kind of cussed at him. So yeah, it happened. That was interesting. And then a poor dog had diarrhea everywhere. The guy was picking it up for a while and Matt made a joke that it was keeping his hand warm. Anyways, so it was a good little time. I really enjoyed it. Nice little break people watching. So, there are a couple things that I was dying to do when I got here to Edinburgh. And one of them was to make my own custommade Paris Tweed Islander bag. They have workshops. We got to do it the day that we traveled here to Edinburgh and had a couple of hours. They have a cafe. It was such an amazing experience. Our guide, instructor, Chris, was phenomenal. I can’t recommend the experience enough. Matt had a good time and he didn’t even get to make a bag. A chai latte and a bespoke custom handbag. You need to book this ASAP. Okay, I’m just saying. And now back to your regularly scheduled program. But these are stores around Edinburgh that you can go in and actually like purchase the bags. So, you don’t have to make them. I definitely recommend the experience of making them. So, let’s go check out the store cuz I love my bag so much. [Music] Hey, [Music] look. [Music] I know this is typically when people would go have their happy hour before dinner. um fall asleep. But our happy hour is going to be hot drinks cuz we’re freezing our booties off and we need a little caffeine. So, we found a local coffee shop and we’re going to get something to drink here. [Music] Guys, I’m so warmed up and cozy. And I feel like that’s just what Edinburgh is. Like, get a book, cozy up in a cafe. Even if it is a rundown tourist cafe. The views outside the window of the Royal Mile were excellent for people watching. And we didn’t have to freeze our butts off to do it. Off to our dinner reservations. [Music] I’m trying to convince Matt to get the wild Scottish pigeon. as a starter, but I know for a fact he’d make me try it, so I don’t know. Also, I don’t think it’s like the street pigeon she’s thinking of like Edinburgh pigeon. Probably more like actually out in the wild not eating the garbage and leftover scraps from tables. We don’t know though. True. We do not know. They could catch him real low. This is the picasha bread with Edinburgh Butter Company butter. It is super soft and creamy and spreadable. Seems like it’s pretty freshly baked and that butter is really nice. It’s not too salty. Delicious picata bread. For our second starter, you know, after our first starter of picatcha and butter, we went with a very traditional Scottish dish recommended by our waiter and it is called cullen skink, which is a Scottish smoked paddock, leak, potato, and cream chowder with more freshly baked pkatcha bread. For my main, I was torn between two. One was the Scottish venison honch and the other was the Scottish grass 35day aged ribeye. Our waiter recommended the ribeye. I said, “You can’t really go wrong with either.” So, I wanted to go with something super Scottish tonight, but after that heavy lunch and then whiskey on top of it, my body’s like, “Hey, you need to slow down and eat a salad.” But they don’t have salads, so I went with a mushroom risoto with black truffle pesto, parmesan, and chives. I’m pretty excited about it. Getting lively in here. We might have to start talking a little louder. This chowder smells delicious. It is piping hot. It’s super meaty. Got big chunks of potatoes in it. That is a wonderful chowder. The smoked fish in there just falls apart, but it’s got just enough smokiness on it. The chowder is not like super thick and creamy, which is nice. It doesn’t sit as heavy as like a really heavy cream chowder would. This is delicious. I’m a fan of felen skin. Matt taught me well, you put bread under just in case it spills. [Music] Incredible. Like Matt said, super light, not super rich, so I can see how you could eat a whole bowl of this. It’s like good comfort food, especially when it’s cold and rainy. I really like that. That might be one of my favorite chowters. It’s delicious. I think we can say we really like the soup. My steak also came with a small side salad and chips. The chips are fresh out of the fryer. Crispy, delicious, but what can you ask for? Very green, very salady. He’s not the hugest fan of salad. Oh yeah, bring it home. Thank you. The steak is a little small than I would normally get, but it’s the only steak size they had on the menu. And it’s 8 oz. Slightly thin cut to be honest, but they seem like they’ve done a good job getting it cooked to medium rare without going over that. Solid steak. Not a lot of seasoning going on. Just relying on the quality of the meat, which is great. Fat seems to be rendered nicely. Again, I wish it was a thicker cut steak personally, but flavor is great. Can’t complain about it. So you can definitely smell the truffle pesto. Risoto is really hard to cook. So I’ve had some really great ones and I’ve had some really mediocre ones. So see well al dente. This is really good. The parmesan and the truffle and the chive. I’m really happy with this dish. Every time we pull the camera out, everybody stares at us cuz we’re surrounded by people. So we’re just going to eat our meal now in peace. And um yeah, we’ll see you after. [Music] So, dinner was good. Not great. Yeah, unfortunately. So, but I think the move if you do decide to go here is to go with one of the more traditional Scottish dishes because the cullen skink was honestly fabulous. And they have award-winning haggus. And we saw a lot of people getting like the roast and potatoes and the casserole. So, yeah, if you do come here, don’t make the same mistake that we did. Just go with the traditional Scottish dishes. No, it definitely didn’t put a damper on our time. I have fallen in love with this city. Oh my gosh, it really is an incredibly beautiful city. It’s like you’re walking on a movie set around every corner. So, if you ever get the chance to visit, we can’t recommend it enough. And we hope that we’ve helped you plan your trip to Edinburgh. And if you need more tips and recommendations for planning your trip, check out our blog. We’ve linked it down in the description. And we’ll see you guys on the next adventure. What you doing back there, Natalie? putting stuff from my purse to match backpack because my neck hurts. I’m getting a headache. My little show horse isn’t used to doing any work. She gets uncomfortable when she has to carry things. Matt says I’m a show horse and that he’s a workhorse. Two kind of horses in the world. Show horses and workh horses. And I’m the workhorse. She’s the show horse. Show horses. Okay, that’s a lot better. Thank you. I’m ready to go now. Oh my gosh. What you have in there? I know it’s heavy, dog. You really think it’s heavy? And the other one’s like 5 lbs. It was impressive. What kind of do? It was impressive. Now we’re going to go see where and I ordered an appetite teaser. Apple teaser. Apple teaser. I don’t know what it is. If I can get any of it. Customize it and have a Harris. What’s it called? Oh, I think she’s dying. She’s okay, which is good. Okay, where was I? I got to start from the beginning. Uh, [Music] [Applause] [Music]

Walkers is far from the best shortbread. Try Deans
You can’t do 1 day in Edinburgh to give it any justice. Glasgow yes but you need a full weekend if not a week for Embra.
noooooooo don't touch Bobby's nose it wont bring you luck it only damages the statue Edinburgh people like myself really dislike it the rumour which was started by a stupid tour guide
My wife and I were there 30 years ago. Such a beautiful place. As Australians we were pleasantly surprised to be able to by vegimite in a corner shop. Thank you for the walk down memory lane.
King James I, one of the most famous Kings of all time! He had the Bible translated to English, thus, The King James Version.
We were there a couple of weeks ago. Tried to book Makars Mash before leaving home but no time available. We tried walking up twice as well but no success. That means we have to go back!
Always so fun to watch!
Over there, it’s “house (🏠) -ton”
Nice wee video guys. From someone who is from Edinburgh. Haste ye back. 🏴🥃
Loved the video and you guys know that Scotland is very high on my bucket list!! Thanks for showing me some places that I put on my list to visit, Michael said he would definitely order what Matt ordered at that restaurant!! From the comments, it looks like I will need to make a reservation!! I have always loved shortbread cookies as well so looks like I’m gonna have to try those in Scotland! ❤

Aww i love how romantic Matt got after those whiskeys 💕and finishing off those shortbreads 👀. Great video as usual ❤
Auld Reekie refers to the smoke piollution that has coloured may buildings and monuments such as the Scott Monument it does not refer to waste that was thrown out.
How have we just come across your channel? Love it! We’re off to Edinburgh in early October and cannot wait!
What month are you in visiting Edinburgh?
Hi guys, love your videos!! You two are so cute! 🥰
I was just wondering what shoes Nat is wearing in this video? I would assume they would have to be very comfortable for doing a lot of walking, but they’re cute too, so I’m intrigued.
Hi guys i hope you read this, its to do with ancestry, which you mentioned in the video. back in 2000 my father passed away, it was the time of the PC (home computers) my mother after my father passed, was 58 years old. she decided to trace our family back on her side of the family, she did a few courses, then when she was 59 years old, she went back to university to take her teaching degree, she was also north east england student of the year. The surname she was tracing was her family name Heskett. after gaining her teaching degree, sh taught mature students, family history on the internet how to trace your family. Over the next 20 years, she traced our family back to 1430 in ireland, sadly she could not get back further as back in the 1430s record keeping was not as good and some records had been destroyed during the troubles in ireland. There was no claim to fame in our family except in modern times. Which is my uncle Bishop Ralph Heskett. (see the family name) he was the bishop of Gibraltar, the part of spain owned by the british. Sadly we met him 6 weeks ago, when we laid my mother the legend she was to rest. Bishop ralph did her service, but not only that, Bishop ralph, has done all our family, marriages, deaths and baptised all our chidren in the family, he married me and my wife. In 1992 when i got married, money was tight. we got married where my parents were married, for £60 pounds, my uncle did the service, we had the keys to the church, opened the church, got married locked it back up, next door to church hall for a buffet reception. it cost us 20 pounds for the organ, 40 pounds for the registrar and a 20 pounds dontaion for the church hall.
i went to Edinburgh last summer and this brought back all the wonderful memories – love you guys, this was super fun to watch
and as a Scotsman who grew up not too far from Edinburgh and visit all the time the ubiquitous bagpipes i love them my one comment as shown in your vlog is that now they play way too fast a slower lament sometimes would be much appreciated x
Incredible video of a city we love so much! As always super informative. You guys are the best!
Ps: if you have the chance, come back when the theatre fringe festival is on! The Royal Mile is rammed and the city is buzzing even more!
This video is an absolute masterpiece! The amount of effort and passion you've poured into this truly shines through, making it incredibly captivating from start to finish. You're genuinely setting the bar high for quality content! ✨
boring. 4 minutes in and nothing yet….
Glad you enjoyed my Country 🏴🏴❤️❤️
Please be careful when visiting Edinburgh. Sadly over the last five or ten years it has become a cheap and nasty tourist attraction and a student town/city. The festivals are primarily visited by visitors and tourists rather than residents.
I read that Mary used to spend time at my grandfather's Seton Castle. Can you even imagine? 😄 I used to obsessively read about Mary and other historical figures, not having a clue that my ancestors were hanging out with her 😄
Love this, lots of tips for my trip next month. I am hoping to escape my Australian Winter/Spring weather. Hopefully it will be good weather and I will charge my pods 😉 I know to book the castle too. Would love to try the mash place but I am not sure they will be keen on solo diner taking up space. Do you know if they do takeaway?
LOVE all your vlogs. You do a great job, informative, and look like you really are having a fun time. Thank you.
I just cant tell you how much I loved this !! I married a Scotsman and lived in Edinburgh, well outside of town, for 3 years. Moved back to America , Im a Texan, in 2001 with my husband. This brought back so many memories !! By the way, Nat you are just beautiful ! I am 81 now and just like watching you and Matt show us so many great states in our beautiful country of America too.
Love the red nails!
What a wonderful day!
Great video and lovely to have memories rekindled. I lived just off the royal mile for a year. The locals pronounce Edinburgh Eedin-bruh. I'm looking forward to returning to this wonderful city in a few weeks time.
Really enjoyed your video! Greetings from Germany 😊
Edinburgh is on the wishlist for our travels!
Thanks for sharing
Last time i see video Malini Angelica YouTube Scotland. Thanks for sharing.
1h7day job
Just came across your channel and this is the first video, am from Scotland an hour away from Edinburgh, subscribed and see what adventures you take me next lol , great video guys 😊
How can you stand to spend only one day in someplace so beautiful? Is there anyway that you can find time or that they can give you time to spend a little more time in these beautiful countries? It makes me sad, but it makes me sad for you too you guys work so hard.
Usually it’s pronounced Edin—bruh,
Iron-bru does have iron in it.
Great video! I'm traveling to Scotland next month, so excited
When it snows it is beautiful
It seems like if you're not a alcohol drinker nor potato eater there's not much to enjoy culinary wise in Scotland. Is that true?
