Say hello to the first
segregated cycle lane
in Leigh, on St Helens Road!

The bollards and kerbs provide
separate space for pedestrians,
cyclists and motorists, which reduces the chance
of conflict between
different road users, and hopefully prevents
illegal parking on the
pavements and bike lanes. The new bus stop bypass
also helps separate people
cycling from motor traffic.

  1. As a spoiled Dutchman, I can tell you that this design wouldn't cut it in the Netherlands. The many bollards combined with the narrow cycle path seem like an accident waiting to happen. In NL most of the bollards on cycle paths have been removed because people would crash into them regularly.
But of course I understand how this is a major improvement if you had to cycle on the busy road before. I also get why the bollards are (unfortunately) necessary.

I'm actually curious how the motorists feel about the cyclists taking some of their road space.
