Ever wondered what it would be like to go bicycle touring as a family? I recently had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Cedric and Azur – the father and son from the family of three which make up Six Spinning Legs. Since Azur was 1yrs old the family have undertaken family holidays on bicycle tours. It started off with Azur attached to Cedric’s bike, then by age 5 he was pedalling his own bike on some pretty epic adventures. This included completing the entirety of the Rhine River Route on Eurovelo 15.

Since those trips the adventures levelled up and recently the family of three took a trip through Central Asia. Azur is now 10 years old and he chose the destination for this tour which would see them take on the high mountain passes and terrain of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. I have to say this is a place I’ve often wanted to cycle my touring bike so it was great to be able to chat with both of them and find out what it was like to be cycling out there. We talked about wild camping, different cultures, food, navigating issues such as sickness and mechanicals and of course all about the incredible scenery and what it was like to be surrounded by amazing mountains and high altitude lakes.

Azur may only be 10 years old but already he has a world of experiences many of us could only dream about. I could tell by the way he spoke that he is mature beyond his years and when I asked him questions such as what makes a great wild camping spot, it was clear that he’s very much an expert already!

I also spoke with Cedric to find out what the reaction has been to their bicycle adventures from others – both the good and the bad. Overwhelmingly people are positive about how the family tours and the ability of Azur to pedal his bike on these adventures. But of course with the good are those who perhaps don’t see it as correct. Personally, I find it inspiring and I hope it will motivate others to think of the possibility of travelling in this way with their children as well.

The photos posted here give a great snapshot of this bicycle tour and were shared with me by Cedric. You can listen to the full interview – out now as Seek Travel Ride – ep. 40.
