After riding Whistler mountain bike park for a whole week of Crankworx and Red Bull Joyride, it’s clear that almost every rider spends thousands of pounds on their enduro and downhill mountain bikes. But I wanted to answer the question, can an affordable budget hardtail MTB survive whistler bike park’s downhill tracks, jump trails like A Line and double black diamond downhill tracks.
Enjoy the test video on the Marin San Quentin 1.

today we’re going to answer the question what can an entry-level hard tail actually achieve so it’s been a long time since I worked with the Marine San Quentin hard tail this was a project that I was super involved with with Marin where we wanted to design a hardtail mountain bike that can do everything a bike that’s as suited on pump tracks and kind of your local Trails as it is here at Whistler Mountain Bike Park so this is the San Quentin 1 which is their most entry-level model the prices for this are 895 or $1,100 it’s a super sick bike with like heavy upgrade options it’s got the routing dropper post it’s a bike that you can absolutely upgrade yourself and make better but fresh out of the box this is brand new and I’ve just got the lift up to the top of aine so I feel like we’re going straight in the deep end on a bike that I know is capable but I want to prove to you guys how epic these hard tailes truly are and for that price point coming to Whistler it’s going to be a sick video isn’t it let’s drop into aine I got Duncan Shaw following me on his trail bike I’m nervous let’s do it you ready aine but the brakes are definitely going to need to B in woo so far so good right I’m going to get into it now I can trust this thing properly here we go so sick actually feels really comfortable do you want to go into the woods and do some BMS this bike does do it all even though the brakes really need to bed in this is actually super hardtail friendly woo you can rip this bike oh my word this is honestly really surprised me I dropped you I actually lost you it’s not too bad this thing blows my mind honestly spend less than 900 quid on this and come to Whistler how much money will you have left over for beer and food and fun this is sick look at that feature there let’s push this hard tail to the limits pulled over on the side of that nice smooth blue and already I’m kind of getting really over excited about this hard tail so we found this proper a classic Northshore wher style track with a drop up there over a tree stamp and then they step onto a bridge and a drop off and the landing is full and riddled with braking bumps that’s a bit that’s going to catch me out but actually to prove what hard tail can do at wer bike park I can’t ignore this stuff this is Whistler so let’s do some proper black diamonds already this wasn’t what we had planned we were going to do blue runs and maybe aine and now look I love this bike oh wow all right boys oh we’re on now that was scary yes this bike’s brilliant all right let’s carry on it was so sick stopping and doing some proper jumps on this thing though I’ve got so much faith in it now so we can go Big Woo oh you do feel the Rocks but I kind of like it it’s proper involved oh my God that’s that was not the track but she loves it the hard tail loves it I’m so stoked that this bike can just hit the drops the jumps Road gaps now we’re back on real technical stuff because of the super slack head angle this bike just eats it up and you can maintain so much control I’m buzzing I’m so into it there’s a brand new track here called Tatiana it is a double black diamond I think it’ll be the first time San quenon 1’s been taken down a double black diamond I kind of want to be the first FA and if we’re out here to prove this bike let’s do it boys and you start things off with a nice skinny all right jump onto this and jump off oh my God this is going to be so hairy I I can’t I can’t believe I’m doing this wow what can’t this bike do that was nearly a nearly a crash but I didn’t this is a double black oh my God oh my God woo H tail yes M this thing this thing’s astonishing what a bike hey I’m pretty sure it’s only got 130 M of front travel all of these rocks are bigger than 130 mil just deals with it so well I mean you can probably hear the brake bumps but the fact that I’m still going and still have life in my arms and hands is a pretty good thing I’m loving this it’s like you get to appreciate mountain biking all over again cuz all the little elements of the trail come out yes I spent the entire start of my career riding hard tails and people told me like mt they told my parents even don’t get your sons Matt jono downhill bikes and jro bikes they don’t need them they need to learn all their skills on a hard tail and I think for me having that as a reminder I spend I spend so little time on these aggressive hard tailes now I I’m going to definitely build up my san quinon again it’s just so fun and the San quente one being the most entry-level spec the fact that we just did a lap of Whistler bike park and it just ate it out I hit the jumps the technical stuff the road gaps The Rock rolls The Roots the BMS it’s just so good value for money so brilliant so get online get down your local Marine dealer and ask about the than quenon one because honestly we’re at the best mountain bike park on Earth that feels like just the best bike if you’re getting into it Legends

Yes this video is two years old, but I just watched it, so I'm commenting on it. I have a (2009) Trek 6000 hardtail, that I a) love, and b) likely fits the "budget hardtail" definition for this video, even if it is an older bike now, that said, I agree with @griffmtb that it is 90% the rider, because as good as my Trek might be, while Matt could absolutely send it down Whistler bike park, I cannot lol Very cool video though!

I bought the new huffy rock creek 29, just recently got new tires, Kenda sport nevegal 29 2 20, i have the trexler nature preserve here in Allentown Pennsylvania and it handles everything from the jumps, berms and more.
anyone can do this u just need the confidence dont get me wrong tho matt is 1 of the best
I bought a Realigh Talus 5 for like 190$. And I’m just upgrading it. Isn’t 1,000$ like entry level for a hood full suspension. 😂
Because I ain’t spending that much on a hard tail
guys i have a similar bike a rocky mountain soul 20 2023 with the same fork but with 120mm travel and when i ride it it locks out after an hour of riding, is it just a bad fork or is it a problem
my hardtail is half that price lmao
the camera makes it seems youre going slow but youre not

Oh yes very cheap
I love whistler 😍
Thats not a "budget" bike, it's a entry level pro bike
it souned like a minecraft skeleton
A lot of hardtail riders watching this in knowing agreement. They can absolutely shred (if you have the necessary skills). Nicely displayed here! Proper hardcore dropping in on the big features!👍💪

Lol. "Budget "
“Do some proper jumps” 🧐
bro i always thought the bolinas was budget and bobcat midrange while san quentin very expensive lol
“Budget”💀
is it 29" or 27,5"?
Lmao there's a reason why this video is 8 min long lol
a hardtail can handle anything the rider can handle.
Don't even get a tapered head tube for that price. I know this is 2 years old but so many better options fir cheaper now. With tapered head tube's which means more upgrade options. Even the san Quentin 3 for almost 2k still appears to not even have a tapered headtube that's crazy
Not just on bike this is true definition of skill
I'm 100% buying one of these this looks fun!
Bro 1100$ is not budget that is really much
the worst thing is when i am riding my hardtail and i go over a couple smalldrops or down the stairs and i hear my deraileur dying in the back
Just recently found this Channel and have been binge watching all Matts vids..I am 54 and used to ride BMX in the 80s but I bought a mountain bike last year and have found my passion for riding again..Sending love to you and all your viewers from Leeds UK..✌️❤️
That is a clone of my 2006 Gary Fisher Mullet which I had setup like a true old school mullet dx32 24" 2.6 front dx32 26" 2.4 and 8" hydraulic brakes single speed marzocchi drop off shocks and husselfelt truvativ cranks and a dj seat slammed and I hit everything your riding for many years on the bike and all I ever had to replace was brake lever my grips and the front tire and I had taken that thing off of 10-ft drops jumping staircases with it s doing bush riding just finding stuff to hit that is what I always enjoyed most is finding my own lines creating my own course and I used to have a mini shovel I would bring with me and I would just build stuff I did the same thing when I used to snowboard and I'm only one hour drive away from Whistler so you got to imagine living in the Canadian Northwest there is so many spots to ride you know some places you have to go to a bike park not me you know I didn't want to go to a bike park and have to take money out of my paycheck to ride when I could just find places on my own unfortunately that bicycle was stolen during the pandemic along with my 2009 Norco a-line team and it was also set up in a mullet configuration and my current jump bike is still running 24" wheels and yes you can still buy 24 and 26 cause they ain't dead all those putting 29s on a jump bike looks ridiculous for me my DX 32 and a 24 could handle anything and everything that I threw at it and I always landed rear tire first always and I'm 200 lb.
So that same setup but with a 150-170 single crown is perfect with a 780 mm bar with a slight rise and some serious tires is an excellent experience.
Budget 😭
I’m a new rider and bought a new hardtail to get started. Thinking of going to mountain creek with it to check out the scene there. I’ll stick to the greens but looking forward to it

To be fair, in the late 80's and into the 90's, the gear was nowhere near as capable as even the affordable stuff today. But, yeah, a good rider makes it look easy just like a pro tennis player could still destroy me with an old wooden racket.
stop it your proving my wallets point of me not needing a new bike its just my skill issue
I have watched so many great riders shred on basic bikes it's obvious the rider is the important part, not the bike. Like Efren Reyes beating the top American billiard pros with a $20 cue…
Matt pushing the sponsorships HARD. Of course the video outcome will satisfy the hypothesis.
