Stage 14 to France, 16,000 feet of climbing. All the top GC riders chose arerobikes. Stage 12, 12,000 ft of climbing. Aerobikes. Time trial day. Aerobikes. What is going on in the tour to France right now that we are not seeing anyone on any team touch a climbing bike? Sure, you have your people who are in the back of the field or maybe supporters riding some climbing bikes, but it seems like the entire field right now is being dominated by arerobikes, which is absolutely insane. Have we hit a pinnacle, a plateau if you would, that these arrow bikes are just so much more dominant than a climbing bike that they’re able to achieve such a weight to be at 6.8 8 kgs, 7 kg that they are taking the benefit of an aerodynamic bike going downhill descenting, maybe having better control, maybe get an advantage when speeding up to topend speed, or maybe it can achieve a higher topend speed when going down a mountain. Uh, I don’t know. But it’s mind-blowing to me because both these bike companies, Konago and Cerllo that have TD Pagacha and Yonas Vinegard, both have a really dominant arrow bike, but they both just relaunched a brand new climbing bike. Konago being the V5 RS and with Surella the R5. The only person I saw ride the R5 that really means anything was Septus. And that was it. I believe Matteo Jorgensson wrote it and he had like his worst day on that field. Every other stage, stage 12, uh, TAD1 with his Y1 RS, this was stage 14, Matteo Jorgensson and Jonas Vanguard both rocking their Cell S5. Like I said, they could probably get this thing to 7 7.1 kg. Um, so it’s it’s something that uh I don’t know if it’s because of the fact that Yonas and both TAD are smaller guys and they have a smaller size bike, but really I mean it used to be such an advantage to get a 6.8 kilogram bike. That was the whole talk of the town. No one’s riding a bikes. They have these specific bikes. Now it seems like aerodynamics is dominating everywhere. So you have Yonas Vinegard, Matteo Jorgensson S5. You have Totty Bagasha riding Y1 or S. Pretty much his whole team’s riding Y1 or RS uh with Envy wheels. entire ride. They’re not even going to the shallower reserves like uh Yumbo, I’m sorry, Visma Lisa bike. Literally, these are still like 45 mm, 55 millimeter in the back. Uh crazy deep wheels for this ride. Uh and also that white paint I’m sure is heavy. So, I’m I’m sure this bike is still 7.2 7.4 kg. I mean, the MV wheels are much lighter, but my god, still arrow bike riding. This was on the 4,950 meter climbing day. So, it’s a 16,000 ft climbing day. Still chose the Aerobike. You have Ben Oconor rocking the Giant Propel. Again, they have the brand new Giant TCR, which they just launched, which is their dedicated climbing bike with integrated cables. He chooses the Propel. And I have a theory for why I think this is uh Simon Yates, the uh the Jirro winner, rocking the Serella S5. And he’s one of their strongest climbers beside he’s he’s their second best climber, I believe, uh for uh uh Vizmissa bike for sure. But again, rocking the shallower wheels. You have uh Orba Orca Arrow. Lynette Sofa. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. Leonard Van Itvelt. Very sorry. Rocking the Orbe Orca. They have a dedicated climbing bike that they put out. The Orbe Orca, which is I’m sorry, the Orca, which is their lightweight climbing bike that’s stupid crazy lightweight. Adam Yates rocking their Y1 RS again. I mean, literally the whole entire Pelaton. And then this this day as well for their TT stage. Uh uh Taipacha rocking a 6.9 kilogram shaved off white paint custom black lightweight as possible carbon tide sharings 6.9 kg on this bicycle for the TT stage and he was dominating on this thing. So, my theory is this. On these stiff bikes, we all know we want a light bike to go up, obviously, and you’re climbing and when you’re going at these speeds, you’re climbing at, you don’t get the aerodynamic benefit of what an aerobic does. Aerodynamic benefits you probably get at 25 miles an hour and above. Um, but aerobikes have always been known to be stiffer. They have a better lateral. They have a better uh transfer of power. So, they’re deeper tubes. They’re known to be a little bit stiffer ride, but they also give a little bit more of a uh better or generous stiffness of power. So, when riding up these crazy gradients, 8% 9% I 10% whatever it is. When going up these crazy gradients at these slow speeds, you’re not getting that frame swaying back and forth with these skinny tube the hell with these skinny tube uh climbing bikes that don’t have a lot of meat to that bottom bracket. There’s a lot of power going in. you can see definitely probably see those bikes swing. So with a stiffer arrow bike with a more beefed up bottom bracket, maybe they’re getting a better power transfer and not losing any power going back and forth. And then the also the second on there, the benefit is with an arrow bike that’s being a little bit heavier than that climb bike. Let’s say 7.1 kg, 7.2 kg descending down there, you have the aerodynamics. Now it’s probably a bit a longer wheelbase a little bit. You probably have a higher topend speed. Um, and it probably gets up to those speeds a little bit quicker as well. So, you’re getting a ton of benefit descending, which I know some of these guys, I mean, let’s say that on the climbing bike, you can get 50 miles an hour. And then on the aerodynamic bike, because there’s less drag, you can get 55 miles an hour. That’s huge descending against an opponent who has 12 seconds on you or whatever. Uh, and instead of taking that weight penalty of the 6.8 to 7.2, that’s a good amount. I It’s It’s crazy me. I I thought for sure that the arrow bike and the climbing bike was there to stay. Specialized is a little bit behind on the tarmac SL8. I They need to bring back an arrow bike. I’m I’m missing out. I have FOMO working at my store and selling bicycles because arerobikes seem to be dominating right now. The S5 just dropped. They’re selling like crazy. The Y1RS, people want those things right now. Uh, it really does seem like it’s 2012 all over again. And the aerobike scene is just going crazy because these bikes are coming super lightweight. You can build them up with super lightweight wheels. You can get it to that 6.8 kg weight and you get a ton of aerodynamic benefit compared to the skinny tube climbing bikes for sure. I haven’t seen Yonas touch an R5 yet the entire tour to France. And that was just a bike that I don’t even think it released yet. It’s a hidden launch and like I said, the only person that was riding was Seus in that. But why would you want to go ahead and do that if especially if you’re putting down power in those gradients? You don’t want that bike swaying back and forth and losing power. These things have crazy beefed up bottom brackets. So absolutely insane. I know that there’s still more toward France to go. I know there’s still more mountain stages. Maybe we’ll see them go ahead and go for a climbing bike in that situation. I remember last year Todd didn’t have an arrow bike. He was riding the V4 RS the entire time. Uh and then Yonas in those stages was rocking his R5 because the S5 was much older, much heavier. But now these newer variations of these bikes, Tata has a choice to go arrow. He’s going arrow. Uh the new S5 came out. It’s lighter. So they’re making it a little bit lighter and they’re having that ability, too. And there’s this comment on here that this is crazy, but it says sponsor make these riders use this bike because they have to sell them. In any case, the harsh reality is that we’re not F1. We’re the bike. the integral part of the victory. In cycling, only legs count. And anyone who doesn’t understand this concept is delusional. Everything else is just business. If they made riders use bikes in 25 years ago, they do the same thing. 100% I agree with you that the legs are the biggest thing. No matter what, whoever has the best legs that day is going to obviously if if on even bikes for sure, like you know, like like in terms of like but some bikes are faster than others when you’re talking margins. You’re talking about a 25-y old bike compared to a modern day bike, it’s a it’s an unfair advantage. But there are some bikes that are marginally better than the others and just very very little. But sponsors want people to win. And no doubt in my mind does TAD and Yonas do everything they can to get the upper edge on their opponent. If they want to ride an S5 that day and that that means they’re confident that they can win that stage, they’re going to choose an S5 that day. It doesn’t matter if their sponsor Sevela says they want them to ride the R5. He wants to win that race. He wants to get on that podium. He’s gonna get more sponsor dollars for Sevel for winning. He’s gonna get more eyes on CL. So the bigname guys, they’re not being forced on any bike that they want. They choose their equipment. They choose their gear. Look at that. Even on his bike right here, he’s rocking over fast carbon fiber axles right there. I’m sure those aren’t team regulated. Same for these wheels. These are reserve wheels with, I think, customtuned hubs and carbon fiber spokes. They don’t make those wheels, but those are custom made for that. and reserve as a partner on there. They’re doing everything they can possible to go ahead and compete. Same with Tade. I’m sure Shimano wants them to rock uh the regular Durxis chain rings. He wants to lighten up his bike, probably carbon tie. So, obviously, you know, they’re going to do everything they can to win that matter. And same with Tade. They’re not going to be like, “Hey man, today you got to ride this V5 RS because our sponsor is saying so.” The sponsor like, “Hey, put that man on whatever bike feels confident. Get him a win out there.” Let me know what you guys think. This is crazy to me. Mind-blowing. Uh, it’s crazy to see 16,000 ft and 12,000 ft of climbing on arerobikes when they have lethal weapons. The only thing it means to me is that maybe they need to go ahead and lower that weight for that climbing bike to make it a reason to buy a climbing bike. Maybe 6.2 kg, maybe 6.5 kg. Um, but there these bikes now are coming out are literally crazy lightweight. You can achieve around that weight. Uh, and really there’s no point to buying a climbing bike anymore because you can just put an arrow bike with either shallow wheels or mid wheels and it’s 6.8 kilograms. So, anyways guys, that’s going to do it for this video. Let me know what you guys think. Let me know if I’m wrong. Let me know if you hate me. See you guys next

  1. What do you think??? do you think the aero bike is the new meta??? do you think climbing bike is a non factor? do you think the uci needs to change the weight limit rule down to a lighter weight to make climbing bikes more useful??? Let me know

  2. I saw that Jonas' S5 has overfast carbon through axles, these teams are finally smartened up to go after all the weight weenie gains that the forums have known about for 2 years+

  3. and then you have a guy like nils politt who sits at the front all day everyday. he always uses the V5rs over the Y1rs. i guess maybe the geometry just suits him better perhaps?

  4. In recent days I‘m always wondering why they wouldn‘t drop the minimum weight. I don‘t know all the details, but I assume it was introduced for safety reasons, but materials have come a long way since then. I bet back in the day a 5kg bike was ultra sketchy but in todays day and age a 6kg bike is probably absolutely fine.

since all tourbikes need to be homologated and able to be purchased by the average bloke, I bet there is some sort of crash/load testing.

I say lower that rule to 6kg or 5,5kg and let the weight weenies go crazy.

  5. from 25KPH there is a measurable benefit from aerodynamics vs weight. these gusy are averaging 27kph + on climbs. makes sense.

  6. With aero bikes coming down in weight there is no point in having 2 bikes. Its a cost factor. Also sometimes it goes downhill. At 90km/h an aero bike may be advantageous.

  7. Very bad marketing strategy considering the millions invested in sponsoring OR very bad climbing focused bike to the point of not being picked.

  8. I have heard this rumor going around various Colnago authorized dealers that Colnago wants Pogcar to win the TdF in the Y1RS.

When the Y came out and Pogi rode it, a lot of wealthy amateurs ordered the bike, as we know wealthy amateurs are the biggest demographic for those ultra expensive bikes. However, Pogi then started to ride the V bikes again, especially the spring classics. These amateurs panicked, is there something about the Y Pogi doesn’t like? So they started to request changing the order to the new V5RS feeling Pogi may still prefer the V over the Y.

So Colnago is having Pogi riding the Y1RS to change the conception that maybe he didn’t like the Y1RS. Obviously this is just a rumor/theory that I have heard, don’t flame me.

Personally i think Pogi can win with any bike in the peloton (though he might indeed have a preference), so that’s that.

  9. well on a GCN video they stated that aero starts making a difference at 15km/hr. They just didn't state how much of a difference at that speed. So maybe at 15km/hr it is only a 1% power savings and it increased from.

  10. Man, they are climbing at 18mph cant say Aero isn't important at that speed, not mention the rest of the stage when they aren't going up 10% grades

  11. New TCR Advanced SL launched along with framesets, and New Propel advanced SL and Team Jayco Alula frame set

New TCR also tops out at 172.5mm cranks on the L and XL sizes

Curiously, they also come with Handlebars that would be deemed "illegal" by the UCI if I'm not mistaken

XS and S size come with 37 on the tops, 42 on the drop
M through XL is 39 on the tops and 44 on the drops.

  12. No need for climbing bikes in the TDF. Aero bikes always dominate and Specialized needs to bring back the Venge. I saw someone riding The Peter Sagan edition on A1A. So rare to see those.

  13. still think the colnago y1rs looks sooooooo good but if the tour mag test is true it having such pour BB stiffness compared to the other top dogs for the $$$$$$$$ they want for it. need to take that back to the drawing board. They are Colnago for god sake. its like buying a koenigsegg with body flex like the old T tops used to have

  14. The canyon aeroad has been the favorite bike of the riders in the pro peloton in mountain stages for at least 2 years (Movistar-Alpecin).Good that you figures it out afther 2 years. 😂

  15. I usually agree with most of your takes but today's video was a rare miss. Climbing bikes won't be back until after the uci weight limit is removed and even then it would be a hard sell to use a climbing bike. As for the point of disagreement; aero bikes are not laterally stiffer which has been proven repeatedly, aero benefits (of non-rotating parts) are evident at almost all speeds. The biggest benefit is form the energy savings over the course of the whole day though. The tour is a massive logistics problem for energy availability, anything that saves energy is important. OH, and the Tarmac is effectively an aero bike.

  16. These new aero bikes are slowly becoming the new “do-it-all” bikes. We will see how many bike brands that don’t have a dedicated aero bike in their lineup are taking notice. Hopefully Specialized and Trek will be amongst those brands.
