Anyway, potentially our second last day of actual bicycle touring here in Finland before I get to Helsinki, do a few things in Helsinki and then we’re off to a new country, Estonia. Bittersweet. Uh the other thing that’s bittersweet is my rear [ __ ] rack is broken. It’s not there’s no sweet. That’s just bitter. Um actually actually we have the whole like bike of thesis thing where like everything on the bike has been changed at some point except for like the frame and like some very minor things. The rear rack is original to the bike. So the bike will even be more bike of thesis as in you’ve essentially swapped out every component. Is it the same bike? depends on your definition. Um, I posted a video on Discord of the rear rack being thought. So, right now, like one half of it’s just broken and it’s hanging on. I only noticed it cuz I was putting bags back on. I’m like, it’s wiggling more than it usually is. Is a bolt coming out? Is it loose? And then I wiggled it and I looked. I’m like, nah, she snapped. Um, yeah. But like of all the components to break, usually a rear rack. Rear racks are a common component. I don’t think the Kona suture is going to be any weird scum one that’s like steel. In theory, I think it’s a steel rack. Like does anyone weld with steel? Could just get just weld it back together. Uh anyway, we can go out. Um, yeah. I don’t know if I’m just going to run to a bunch of bike shops and try to find an appropriate rear rack or if we just try to wing it or what the strat is. But the issue is if it fully breaks, we might have issues cuz then I don’t have any way to carry luggage on the back of my bike until we get a rear rack. So like if I’m between towns, we kind of just don’t really have anything. Well, the trailer. Would that fit all my piers? Maybe. Just tuck the This wouldn’t work. That That tape’s not enough for this. How much weight do you have in your rear rack? I don’t know. Haven’t weighed my bags. I’ll get them out. You can think about finding anyone cycle to voca. They can weld it. They’re known as hydraulic press channel. Welding isn’t a hydraulic press. I think I can just show up at some guy’s YouTube channel studio and be like, weld my [ __ ] Still you can hold it. How do you like how can you tell? I feel like honestly I don’t know. I think it’s steel though. some JB weld. It could like it should be replaced at some point or done something proper to it. Um but like we a temporary fix is more than tape but you know something like JB will I could probably do it. Put a magnet on it to see if it’s steel or not. This This one’s magnetic, isn’t it? Does it not need like four points of connection? I’ve never actually bought a rear rack. one side. That’s all. like these parts. So, the bottom part here is where mine broke when it’s these parts here. But then it also attaches to the frame here. Anything? Um I’m just not sure cuz I have a lot of weight on there. So, I have to either adjust how the camera’s mounted cuz all the dimensions are different than my old rack, so it doesn’t work like it did, or I have to adjust how the pure is to make it so the bag’s a little bit further back on the rack. But I I only have one left. Um, cuz I was in Europe a month before that. So, I’m just going to ride as south as I can until I run out of time and then fly somewhere else. So, um, do you want to go to Germany? Uh, potentially if I have time, but I might run out of time. I’ve been to Germany a few times. Yeah. like uh two years ago I rode up the coast of Norway, but I started in Belgium and went through some just a corner of Germany. Okay. Um and then I’ve I’ve hitchhiked through Germany like u actually quite a bit like uh into Munich then all the way up to Berlin and then into Poland and kind of all over. Um Germany is like in the middle of Europe so no matter what trip I’m doing you kind of end up going through Germany for place in the center of Europe. Yeah. Yeah. So no I’ve been there several times. I I do like Germany. It’s a good place. Yeah. How how many years you make bike trips? Uh five years. Five years. Yeah. My first one was uh across Canada during CO. Um across Canada. Yeah. That was my like COVID activity. Yes. Cuz I felt stuck in Canada. So, but I couldn’t leave to another country, but Canada is big enough. I spent the whole summer riding my bike across. Yeah. Have you been touring a long time? Yes, I now four weeks. Four. Four weeks on the trip. Yeah. But have you been on tours before this? Yes. I’ve cycling since 35 years. 35 years. Yes. Mostly Europe or other continents too? Yeah. German internet is not it though. And some is one bike route in the east on a big lake around. Yeah. and a small beautiful trip is close to Aayyama, but it’s only 50 kilometers. Okay. Yes. Many temples. Yeah, cuz I haven’t done a bicycle tour in Japan yet. I’d like to. I’ve only like hitchhiked in Japan. Yes. But it’s different. Um but yeah, everyone that’s been there, like when I see them riding cuz they make videos, too. Um, it looks like kind of small roads and lots of traffic and Yes. not the most comfortable. Um cuz it’s like it’s chocolatey and nice, but it’s not too thick. I don’t when it’s like really like thick and it like sticks to the roof of your mouth and stuff like that. I don’t like I It tastes still tastes good, but I can’t drink a liter of it. And I I need the volume. I need the calories. So kind of go for that. So it’s it’s this is the right chiness and the right consistency. And it’s also fresh is the key thing. A lot of countries don’t even make fresh chocolate milk. So, the things I like countries for on my trip are very much different than that someone might experience on a trip going somewhere. Like I think my experience of traveling through Japan via hitchhiking is so different from uh if you fly to Japan to Tokyo and you check out Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and then go home. So it’s difficult to answer for a vacation. And you also need to know what kind of things you like to do on a vacation. Like is a vacation laying on a beach? Is it exploring different cities and cultures and foods in a completely different place that feels foreign to you and you get to explore that? So I started bike touring. I’m from Canada. So I spent my co first co year riding a bike across Canada cuz it’s a big country and it took a while. And now I switch it up and I do like biking hit trip, hitchhiking trip, biking trip, hitchhiking trip. So this is two month bike tour from the Arctic Circle of Norway south through Finland. In a few days here, we’ll be heading to Estonia and then Latia, Lithuania. Probably make it to Poland before I run out of time. As a Canadian, I got 3 months in uh in Europe, but I only got 27 days left. [Applause] You guys think Rob will ever do a bike tour in uh Europe. [Applause] [Music] clawproof vest. Yeah, before this trip, I was working out. I was gaining weight. I had like upper body muscles that I never had before. And I was loving it. USA bikers ride on car lanes block traffic. It’s nice to see on shoulders. If there’s no shoulder, they’ll block the lane specifically to stop you from pushing them off the road. They say if the road is only as wide as like the road ends at the white line there and you ride as far to the right line as possible, people are really stupid and they’ll just try to like stay in the middle of the lane and drive straight through you. So if you drive in the middle of the lane, that forces you to wait until there’s a safe time to pass into the oncoming lane of traffic, like you’d pass a slow car. So, they’re just trying to not get hit by a car and die, which I guess is like asking a lot. But here, I got a shoulder, so I got my own space to play with. I type flag. Did I not type flag? So, you’re going in with the impression that you won’t enjoy it. But if you go in just with an open mind, being like, “I’m trying something new. I hope I like it.” There’s a good chance he will. So, when we were doing the uh tandem ride to TwitchCon, there was part one on that trip when we went from TwitchCon Amsterdam to Norway for part two. But we were riding the title like cycling tandem cycling to TwitchCon, something like that. Anyway, Sarah was really sick for quite a bit of it and it was just like coughing all the time, was not having a great time, so she needed like a day or two off, but we’re really tight on time at that point. And I felt fine. So, we got her to a train station, got her to ride like a few hundred km ahead. Can’t hear [ __ ] Is it that loud? in here. Yeah. Okay. Continuing. She took a train like a two days ride ahead or something like that. And I rode the the two person bike, the tandem bike by myself while she took a couple days off in Kong I think she was. Um because I couldn’t handle like the title being cycling to TwitchCon. If I took a train for any section, I I can’t mentally deal with it. So, I rode my tandem bike by myself for a few days and um I picked up a random dude from where is he from? On the side of the road. He like flagged me down and asked for water and food. I gave him water and food and then he asked me to call him a taxi and I’m like I don’t we’re in France. So, I don’t know how to order a taxi. And he only spoke I don’t know what language it was. Um, but uh anyway, I’m like, I don’t know how to call you a taxi, but you can ride this bicycle to the next town where there’s a train station. So, I gave him some pastries and some water and we rode ourselves. Wait. [ __ ] I have to go that way. Never mind. I assumed it was straight, but it’s right. Where the [ __ ] am I? Like, if you got across a body of water, you can’t be like, “But you could have rode your bike.” No, you can’t. So, yeah, take a ferry, cross bodies of water. But for anything cyclable, I got to cycle it. So, I just rode my tandem bike without Sarah for pride’s sake. I don’t know. Why aren’t you cycling over to Estonia? Because I am. Oh, okay. I don’t know if it still exists and I showed up there and I’m like, “Oh, this is not what I thought it was going to be.” It was like still a hostel like with bunk beds and shared accommodation, but like everyone there was like a young Russian dude and they just used as like cheap accommodation and they all like had their like bunks like decorated like they clearly like lived there and I came in there. I’m like, “Oh.” Um, anyway, that was kind of weird because everyone was just like did not fit in there. Anyway, even the receptionist through a translator told me that I should probably go somewhere else the next day and they recommended a place that actually had people traveling there. But it was still interesting. I I tried to meet some people, but the only people there first time I stayed at like a traveler’s hostel that didn’t have any like native English speakers. And then I got a job, well actually last year high school, I got a job at Costco. as a front-end assistant and cashier. So, I worked at Costco, which is a for retail. It’s a decent job. Um, and then I did that while I was in college, too, for for 2 years. And then when I started hitchhiking, I quit all that stuff and I [ __ ] off for a while. And then I came back with no money. And then I spontaneously hitchhiked with a backpack and a duffel bag to Calgary cuz I lived in Cologne at the time with no place to stay and no job and like barely any money. And within a week I got a place to stay and I got a job at an outdoor sports store selling outdoor gear like good [ __ ] Uh just like a little local one-off store. I worked there for like a year saving money and living there. And after that I just like get outdoor gear jobs whenever I came back from a trip. So my jobs are always like Oh, I also worked in landscaping right before I um went on one trip. That was also like not fun work. [Music] Very much a male adult entertainer now. So, they had a [ __ ] steel rod with a metal plate welded to the bottom of it. And all you do is pick it up and slam it onto the ground. Um, and like I had no improvised strength. There’s lots of water striders on the water though. It’s a steep climb. Train should not be a problem. I’ve slept lot next to a lot of train tracks and the passenger train actually wasn’t that loud all things considered. I’ve been next to some North American train tracks when a [ __ ] freight train runs through every like 30 [ __ ] minutes and that kind of sucks. The scenery is very nice. [Music] Oh, we might even get a sprinkle of rain in the morning. Just a low chance. Excuse us here. Honestly, not right now. There’s a beach forwards from here. Oh, yeah. I see it. That’s going to be the busier place though. I think Luri like the the path up there will probably be well I’m sure there’ll be a few people that pass by there still tonight but I should have good hours until well early morning then they’ll probably be busy again. I’m kidding. I don’t need to do it like a YouTube video. Um, so I’ve had my Zpax Plex Mid One Man non-festanding DAEA tent for five over five years. It’s come with me on a lot of trips. It weighs 450 gram, weighs like nothing. Very minimalistic. Uh, sometimes not in the best ways. There’s a few minimization features that they made that I’m like, you can add 20 grams for quality of life featuring. All the daea is delaminating. Uh, it’s it’s struggling. I’m getting bit by mosquitoes. It’s time to retire it. I purchased a tent from Canada. Got shipped to Finland. Paid a bunch of import duties and customs and VATs and stuff like that when I could have just bought it in Canada, but I needed a tent. Anyway, it’s waiting for me in Helsinki. Here comes a train. Anyway, let’s do an audio test for this train. I’m like, “Okay, now I’m in my tent. I’m like, I’m cozy. I’m going to go sleep.” And then It’s not too bad. Anyway, this is a non-festanding tent. So, it needs to be staked out in order to stand up. So, stake out the four corners, add the center posts, stick out the front vestibule, and then the rear. And that’s a basic pitch. basic uh meaning like if you’re expecting more inclement conditions which we are not but you can add extra guidelines and such to increase the strength of the pitch for the harsher conditions. Um, because this is not there’s so many holes in it and like that’s not what you’re looking for in the the fly of a of a tent. The denim is just it’s done anyway. But it works fine for a bug shelter. So top’s all wrinkly. That’s what happens when things get old. I’m working on some wrinkles on myself right now, too. Little rain in the morning. I saw a 23% precipitation. Um, and you kind of like consequential things like this is the last night in my Zpack tent. So, I don’t know. I’m feeling sentimental. Uh, and also Santa Monica because tomorrow is going to be our last day of bike touring, like actual touring on the bike in Finland. We should get to Helsinki and then that’s the rest that’s the end of biking for Finland. We’re doing more biking into Estonia and stuff like that. But I’ve been in Finland so long. I’m just used to continuing my tour in Finland. So anyway, consequential days. So, uh, tomorrow is a good day to watch because we’ll finish the bike tour. I don’t know where I’m sleeping.
