I was kindly invited along to Huddersfield Open Market to share what the market has to offer.

The Market is currently under review and will be moving to a temporary location whilst major refurbishment works are undertaken so this may well be the last chance to see the market in its current form.

Everyone was extremely friendly and it certainly got me into the local community spirit and made a fabulous alternative to my usual Saturdays.

Huddersfield Corporation acquired the market rights from the Ramsden Estate in 1876 and then ran a competition to design a new market hall to be situated on King Street. Architect George Edmund Street judged the entries and selected a design by Charles Fowler of London.

A massive thank you to Simon at Simons Pick n Mix as well as Vincent & Ivetta from Langos for being such good hosts as well as all the other market traders who were so accommodating with us and the cameras.

hi everyone and welcome back to the channel well I’ve been kindly invited along to the Huddersfield open market which you can just see behind me when I was young I used to get brought here and you never appreciated all the history behind the place it’s all the original building and it opened in 1888 as you’re walking along you can see all the original cobblestones and you can just picture yourself back way back in time when everybody was there selling the wees but let’s have a modern look around and meet some of the characters I’d say and maybe even try out some of the food that they’ve got an offer so come and join me [Music] n nah [Music] [Music] well after doing a little bit of filming and before it gets busier in the market me and the cameraman Ross we thought we’d have some breakfast so we’ve just ordered from The Snack Shack uh full breakfast for £7 and I do like it actually because sometimes I’ll take mushrooms off and replace it with an egg or something like that and they didn’t charge extra for that so some so well done for The Snack Shack but I can’t wait for the breakfast I’m really really hungry are you hungry as well yes he is and it looks like they’re bringing it fantastic wow that looks great you want be just thank you [Music] 7 quid just look at that absolutely fantastic so um it might look like the zoo while I’m eating so you might I might have to cut some of those bits bits out but uh but yeah looks nice to me [Music] [Music] it’s really [Music] nice well that was a really nice surprise really enjoyed that breakfast why don’t we go and have a look around the market and see what stalls we can find I’m hoping I can speak to a few of the stall loers as well so let’s go and have a look [Music] this [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] well I’ve just been joined by Simon and guess what the Shop’s called it’s Simon’s pick a mix nice to meet you Simon you too thank you good to see you I’ve got my childhood flashing by my eyes cuz this is how I remember sweet shops used to be paper bag get it weighed with your your pocket money um and it’s just such a contrast it is a busy little shop isn’t it how long you been here we’ve been in this location for 2 years yes uh but we’ve just moved here from Queens skate Market which they closed down in November 2022 I believe yeah you were there a long time weren’t you I was there for 16 years 16 years yes the shop was established in 1971 yeah i’ probably bought some sweets from you over there probably yes we’ve seen Generations yeah yeah um yeah so we’re well established in Huddersfield we are a traditional Sweet Shop the old fashion you know your paper bites and your the oldfashioned scales and your oldfashioned sweets I probably won’t be able to get very many sweets for the 10 p i us the shop know come on I remember going to my corner shop in the 70s I used to get 20 P worth of sports mixtures and used to get a big bag full yeah now you’re looking at a p 20 for 100 G and we’re quite reasonably priced here to be honest yeah actually it is it’s really why we’re popular yeah I’m I’m trying to avoid Temptation cuz I’m trying to cut down and I’m like in the worst possible shop I could possibly be in to try and stay that way well the tells me egg think in moderation so once a week won’t harm you I thought it was once a day but anyway well nice to meet you s I [Music] well I’ve just ordered from langos and I thought I’ll try two items so this is lead potato there’s more in that than what meets the eye by the way um which is a popular Hungarian dish I’ve been told it’s delicious so I’m going to try that and then for Afters you might have noticed that uh the cameraman has decided he wants a slice so that is a portion of choco banana cake I thought that’d be really really nice to try afterwards as well so I’m going to tuck in if there any animal sounds it’s just me don’t worry just eating it might sound like I’m at the zoo again all right so let’s try it I’m just expecting things to be underneath this L potato I have to say the potato is delicious and I like roast potatoes but this is much got lot more flavor so it looks like there sausage in there which is homemade oh wow that is delicious I would never have thought of mixing egging with leads potato with sausage really really nice FH M that is absolutely delicious you know I might actually buy some more and take it home it’s delicious well to those of you that I bumped into in the market and that told me about this place thank you ever so much cuz it’s really really nice I’m definitely going to be coming back here well they’ve just kindly giving me a sample of this dish which is chicken and pasta and it’s called T tahon tan no I no I T tahona tah tahona not yeah chicken and pasta well that was embarrassing with my accent trying to speak Hungarian um so it’s chicken and pasta I I couldn’t say t Tonia or whatever it was uh I I apologize to any Hungarian viewers uh cuz I didn’t want to offend but it does look really really nice so I’m going to give this a try so this is chicken and pasta so let’s try that M now we’ve been here for the last hour or so whilst I was cooking this fresh and it’s delicious that chicken is really tender well that’s the first time I’ve tried that really really nice you have to come down here and try it for yourself I don’t know if you’ve got a local Hungarian food place in your town or city but if you within driving distance of here give give them a try they did give this kindly to me as a sample and same with this chocolate cake but I did I have been buying some of the food I’m going to buy some more to take home with me as well by the way so I’m not just being paid to say that I like this by the way so uh thank you to uh langosh for giving me a couple of samples to try anyway cuz I might not have ever tried this you know without it I’ll be back in a second I was going to have dessert after the last dish but then they brought this to me so I’ll be back in a second well after trying those other two dishes I thought why not finish off with dessert so this is choco and banana cake homeade it looks fantastic there is two pieces cuz I thought the cameraman might as well have some so let’s have a little look at that so just broken that up looks really really nice as you can see actually there’s a melted chocolate on top actually so it looks like this white chocolate that’s hardened on top and it’s like a light it’s almost like a chocolate [Music] mousse and then the cake on on the [Music] bottom the only way I can describe the cake is it’s almost like like carrot cake but with banana really really nice the the the banana is um penetrated through the chocolate and it’s almost like a chocolatey banana on the top as well it’s got the it’s almost like it’s fused [Music] together that is really really nice I’ll be back in a bit I don’t you don’t want to watch me eats oh wow trust me that’s nice thank you thank you ever so much thank you thank you it was that nice I’m taking some home with me well I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s video we’re just laughing because we’ve had to re-shoot this part a few times every time I started to speak there’d be a super pror going past or something ridiculous but it’s been a bit different here hasn’t it so fantastic Market some great food I bought some pies some
