indoor training you either love it or hate it reasons why people love indoor training are quite straightforward uh firstly it is very time efficient secondly you stay warm and dry at least until you start sweating loads it’s quite accessible there is now a huge online community and that in turn means that you can either race or train or just ride for the fun of it the reasons people hate indoor training are well they’re reducing for starters reason I used to hate it was because it was boring unrealistic and very very painful things have changed a lot since then though but many people probably just assume that they still hate indoor training based on previous experience using outdated Tech others just don’t fancy it or are put off by the price however indoor training is one aspect of the cycling industry where functionality of the hardware seems to be increasing at the same time as prices decreasing so coming up I’m going to look at a couple of the more recent budget options when it comes to indoor cycling as well as finding out what I would get if I decided to add a few bells and whistles not that you need bells and whistles indoors I now text my butler on [Music] WhatsApp so what Hardware do you need to start cycling indoors well some some of you remember wheel on trainers from the not too distant past they were bloody awful and that is putting it kindly now a direct drive wheel off trainer feels a 100 times better and can work with indoor training apps like zwift uh they have genuinely been a transformative experience I would say and it’s one that’s now been made simpler to access by adding the zift Cog direct drive trainers have been around for quite a while now over decade and they measure your power which is how hard you’re pedaling they also offer the possibility of linking up with training apps but gone of the days of forking out a grand or more to get started there are smart trainers now available for less than β¬300 now we’ve had a look at a few options to see what you get for your money before I get into that though I’d just like to be clear that gcn worked with a number of Partners including zwift not only do they help us make the free to view content we make they also support cying more widely the Tour of France fam ax zift Etc and as we work with them I’m going to be trying these trainer setups on the zift platform there are other options out there but zift is the biggest online training platform with by far the most users so it seems like the right place to start okay let’s start then with an entry level option and one that’s actually pretty new to the market it’s next to me here it’s from vanel or Vell and it’s called the D100 you can currently get it in the UK and in Europe for less than 300 quid with the zift Cog and click more on that later on now it’s an example of just how reasonable things are getting when it comes to starting with indoor cycling and a smart trainer now some of you watching this will be aware that I’m a bit of a bargain hunter you could also describe me as tight or simply I don’t like spending money if I don’t have to either way in researching this video I had a quick look on Teemu and Ali Express to see if I could find something of similar function standard to this van risol trainer for a fraction of the price I couldn’t nowhere near actually and given that all the options I found on there came without the cassette they needed I couldn’t find anything that matched this trainer at all now just mentioned the cassette which is these cogs here on this Wahoo trainer because previously you would have to consider that and purchase one to put on the direct drivet trainer for use with your bike and make sure it was specific to the bike you were using either that or you had to constantly remove one from your wheel put on the trainer when you wanted to ride indoors remove it from the trainer and put it back on your bike when you wanted to ride Outdoors which was a pain in the was a pain in the backside however this van rle trainer comes as I said with the zift Cog and click that enables virtual shifting and also allows you to use pretty much any bike on your direct drivve trainer including this pinell which my colleague olle picked up a Facebook Marketplace for less than 500 quid just a few months ago now the fact you can use any bike pretty much on a whift cog and click is a huge upgrade from previous direct drive trainers and this particular trainer from Van R is also very quiet a huge plus I’d say no matter how far away your neighbors are what else do you need to get started well I would strongly recommend a fan a regular desktop or floor standing fan would do just fine plus a mat or an old towel for the floor and then another towel or two to help you manage all the sweat you’ll generate even with a fan and that’s about it so what are the limitations of a setup like this well that depends largely on you and what you plan to do with it this van rle unit tops out at 600 wats does that matter well it sort of depends really if you want to do Sprint training you can produce more than that then maybe same goes if you want to race on zwift uh I tried tried quite hard it has to be said to go over 600 wats and I did manage it and what I found was that what happened was on the screen it just stayed at 600 watts even though I was producing way more power probably like 650 maybe even 670 in reality there are probably quite a few of you watching this who can hit out at over 600 wats for a few seconds but whether or not you need that capability in a trainer then depends on whether or not you’re doing Sprint training or you just want to Sprint to the Finish Line in a zift race if you’re only concerned with doing urance training or even V2 Max training then I would say that 600 wats is more than enough for the vast vast majority of people I mean personally I can’t remember going over 500 watts on an indoor session for quite a few years this trainer is also limited as to what it can replicate in terms of gradients on the climbs in that it’ll only go up to 6% so if you come across something that’s steeper than 6% in your game online it will just stay at that percentage is that an issue again not really I would say for the vast majority of people because you’re still going to be trying hard it’s still going to feel hard in terms of power measurement van R will claim that this trainer is accurate it to plus or minus 5% which admittedly is nowhere near as precise as some other trainers that I’ll be talking about later on but it’s probably still enough to ensure that you’re staying within your training zones another plus to this particular model is it’s foldable and when it is folded it’s quite compact so you could easily put it under a desk or a table if you’re limited on space so if your objective is to give indoor training a try and you’re not a topend race run Swift this trainer is a decent option [Music] so what do you get if you spend a bit more money well there are plenty of options around that also come with the zift Cog and click the jet black Victory comes with one and is available in the USA UK Europe Canada and Australia and will cost you around $400 Β£400 or Β£450 it gives you 2% power accuracy a max power of8 1800 watts and the ability to climb 18% gradient which is more than I need SL want the Wahoo kicker core zift one is similar to the jet black both in price and functionality and there’s an option at the moment to get it along with a discounted zift subscription for another 100 quid or so shop around the elite dto XR with zift Cog and click claims to be slightly more accurate again at 1 and a half% and go up even steeper gradients knock yourselves out if that’s what you need or want so what if you’d like to take this to an extreme and get the best indoor setup that you can well one option is to get a dedicated unit such as this the zift ride or this the Wahoo kicker bike there are a couple of real plus points to Dedicated units like these uh the first of those is that you can just leave them set up and ready to go the second is that you can set them up for multiple users so if you’ve got the money and indeed the space they’re definitely well worth considering however if you would like to stick with your normal everyday bike for your indoor training there are some premium options here as well for example the trainer that we use here at gcq which is this Wahoo kicker move uh this is also available with the zift Cog and click and it has a power measurement accuracy of plus or minus 1% which is about as good as it gets whether that be an indoor trainer or an on the- bike power meter or even indeed in a laboratory setting uh it will also measure up to 2,200 Watts which is a figure I am yet to crack just about obviously uh the other key function of this is that there’s 8 in or 20 cm of movement front to rear which is going to add to the comfort of your indoor training and another thing with this is it’s super quiet add in the kick a climb which raises and lowers the front end of your bike according to the gradients you’re riding and the headwind fan which can be controlled via your head unit or just by your own heart rate and you have what I would describe as a very slick setup certainly one that adds to the immersive experience that zift have created with their platform and I would say one that removes some of the mental barriers to getting on your indoor trainer in the first place because whilst yes it will still be hard and painful if you make it so it’s also enjoyable now apart from the fact that a setup like this will set you back in the region of Β£2,000 I would say the only other drawback is that you really want to have space somewhere in your house so you can leave this whole thing set up at least for the periods in which you’re doing the most amount of indoor training which for most people will be over the winter months so there are a few options for you when it comes to indoor training setups at different price points if you pay more you do get more but at the same time it’s never been cheaper to get started with indoor cycling at the lower end uh incidentally the zwift ride bike which you now see here behind me is compatible with all of the trainers that we featured in this video so it might be a consideration now or if you’re looking to upgrade in the near future also in the description below we’ll put a list of zift compatible trainers so that you know what you’re looking for right I would like to know what trainer setup you’ve got at home and why why are you pleased with it is it because it was financially quite cheap or because it’s great at performance or both uh let us know in the comments because I’m sure there’s a lot of people watching this that will be interested in what you’re using and why you’re so happy with it right that’s all for this video thank you for watching I’ll see you soon

How would you rate your indoor training or pain cave set up out of 10? What would be the biggest quality of life improvement for your indoor set up?
I picked up a Garmin TACX Neo 2 at a swap meet and, while I like it, it does not support virtual shifting so I am looking for an upgrade.
@gcn how will the KICKR CLIMB move with the KICKR MOVE when the two are paired together? How will the Climb move with the MOVE ? (isnβt the Climb designed to be just stationary?)
Thanks!
I have a wahoo kickr core that I use my Trek Supercaliber on with the zwift cog. Iβm a pure mtb racer so having digital gears saved me the money of another bike. I absolutely live it and have zero regrets.
JetBlack Victory is the way to go
Kudo's to Dan Lloyd for returning. His demeanor is perfect for being a presenter. I sometimes have trouble with British accents, especially when the person speaks quickly. Dan's accent is not as harsh as some, and the pace at which he talks makes hearing the material and thus, learning the material that much easier. Thanks Dan. Very much appreciate your skills as a presenter.
I have an Elite direto. an Elite direto XR and a Wahoo KICKR v4 They are very simular π
I have the Kickr Core. I got it with the standard cassette setup because I'm dumb. I didn't research enough and didn't realize what that cog and click would give me. My wife would also like to try it, and she just has a mountain bike at the moment, with obviously a different cassette, so I will have to change that in addition to the bike every time. So I'm going to try out the cog and click conversion kit.
Magene on AliExpress T110 has same specs as the Van Rysel. I'm not even sure if the Van Rysel is just a rebrand.
Magene also makes a top notch power meter for the ones looking to buy one.
Non mentioning it in the video leaves the feeling as if decathlon is a sponsor of them.
Wahoo Kickr Bike, electronic shifting, no drivetrain maintenance!
Decathlons site currently does not include the zwift hub in its description as being included
Am I the only poor guy who's using a Tacx Vortex Smart? It doesn't have a power meter but its margin of error is +- 10% which is fine and it's super cheap.
I bought the Elite Suito 2 years ago and I must say I'm a bit disappointed, very noisy and not yet cog compatible …
Hi, is it possible to remove the zwift cog and install a regular cassette in its place?
This is great but what about rest of the set up??? Iβm new to this and looking at weather I can do this on a tablet or if I now need to get a new tv as well? Great content as ever!
I found a cheap cheap option: HR2VP, an app that runs on your watch or phone (with a separate heart rate monitor) and sends a calculated wattage based on your FTP and current heart rate via bluetooth that's Zwift compatible. With this I was able to use a dumb spin bike in my building's gym and get an entry into the Zwift community.
It's likely I'll upgrade to dedicated hardware in the future, but even $400 is hard to justify for a hobby you don't know you're into yet.
During the pandemic, and especially in the first year of it, Zwift was a godsend, and it made my indoor training sessions fun. Because workout equipment was hard to find in those years, I just used the trainer and bike that I already had. That meant using a CycleOps Fluid2 wheel-on trainer that I bought in 2004 with a Wahoo BlueSC speed and cadence sensor. And for the bicycle, I am using a 1991 Cannondale R400 that has been a backup bike for many years. The setup is quite reliable, and I actually like having to concentrate on holding my power output to what Zwift is telling me to produce. How is that for a frugal/cheap Zwift setup, Dan?
Coming from the era of the dumb trainer, when using it was a last resort like a foot of snow, and even then an hour was the max. The advent of Zwift etc has been by a game changer
Ive just got a wheel on trainer. because living in the south of France I find there are really only a few times in a whole winter that I canβt ride outside in the middle of the day a few times a week. So Iβve never been able to prioritise getting something nicer. I sometimes wonder if I might enjoy it if I had a nice direct type smart trainer though
I have a tacx boost, but really want to upgrade for the d109, for the price it sounds great
I am in Canada and recently bought the Zwift ride bike and the wahoo kickr core combo. It cost a lot, but it is well worth it. I have had it almost two weeks and have used it 6 times and I can feel the difference already in my strength and endurance. I love the Zwift app that runs on my Mac. I did not want to dismantle my road bike, I only have one bike. I have the room so I went for the dedicated setup. Paying for quality only hurts once, I have found, and so far I am very pleased. I am a 62 year old male and while I am not in bad shape, I do need a winter exercise regime. This is perfect for that.
We have our first smart trainer, a wheel on Tacx Flux S. It was on sale and available at our LBS. It is quiet and easy to use. We run Zwift on our Samsung 7A+ tablet and cast it to our 50" Samsung smart tv. This setup is working very well for us here in PEI Canada. Love your channel, both informative and entertaining!
Zwift frame and the Zwift One or whatever itβs called. Mainly as a time saver and safety aspect during Winter. Summer will be back to the bike outdoors
I love indoor training since ROUVY upgraded
Can you use the zwift cog with other apps?
I use Wahoo Kicker Core that I picked up used and just recently installed the Zwift Cog and Clicker and love it, saves the drivetrain, especially when shifting while climbing.
I have a used $60 wheel on trainer thatβs dumb as a sack of hammers but works great. I use an old wheel/cassette with trainer skewer so thatβs easy. On-bike power meter. iPad for entertainment. All I need
they dont hsve the van rysel d100 in america
What I hate is Zwift…
That shitty game-look-a-like environment with ugly tracks and all kinds of "noise".
Useless.
But they are a sponsor, so…
Just don't buy Tacx. They're poorly made, poor value, and the customer service is awful.
You should have incuded the cheaper wheel on options, I've done thousands of miles on my Tacx T2240 that cost me under 200 quid – and as I want to get back some fitness I've just ordered a Kickr Core, but T2240 did me proud!
using an Elite Suito bought in 2020. I am familiar with their trainers and gave this, their best priced one a try. Added the steerer, Sterzo for controlling turning and cornering. I like this combo very much and it was within the pricing that was improving 5yrs ago. As noticed by all probably, though, the technology, procing, and features are really blossoming every year. Live in cold weather state, and gives me a jump when the cold finally goes away (and snow if we get any).
this is paul powell i have a wahoo v6 trainer with the kicker climmb
Do not buy from wahoo. They have the worst customer support in the industry
Saris H3 on MyWhoosh. Do I love it yes. Did I ride a dumb trainer and stare at a wall prior everyday? Yes. Of course itβs an improvement but truly a world of difference for my training.
My bike came with a disclaimer about trainer use. (Roubaix SL8 Comp) The just of it was dont use a stationary model that doesnt allow the frame to flex like it would on wheels. Even then it suggested finding an older metal frame for trainer use.
P.S. i literally broke my YBN chain today. Not even at the master link… I also wax my system and both bike and chain are fairly new. Im swapping to KMC.
Geez Dan, I haven't seen you for a while, you look great buddy! π
Too long. Too much BS.
The Zwift hub and click has done for indoor cycling what electronic shifting did for outdoor cycling. It's closing in on June, and I am having trouble wanting to go for a IRL ride, but I'm riding the trainer at least 3 days a week. I'm short on time and it just works for me. I hated it before the click and the hub and I would probably not be doing anything right now had I not bought the Kickr core with hub and click. The price to my door was $568. Wow!!
The 6% max of the Van Ryder is quite a limiter. Alpe de Zwift for instance.
Tacx Neo Bike.. It comes with everything you need in one item: Tablet holder and fans. Setup and ready to go at a minute's notice
Excellent presentation as always, Dan!
I normally ride an e-bike but bought a Boardman gravel bike last September for use over the winter as I didn't think the electrics on the e-bike would stand up to a regular soaking. As a 73 yo e-bike rider I don't need a trainer that goes beyond 600 watts! After watching this video, I bought the Van Rysel D100, fitted it with the exact GRX cassette that the Boardman has and attached the Boardman. The D100 came with a coupon code for 3 free months of BKool so that is what I am trying out at the moment. It's only Β£10 pm after that so good value. What nobody seems to highlight is that you need some system to run the app whether it is BKool, Zwift or any of the others. I started on a rather low spec laptop which would only work using the minimum graphics available. Then my neighbour lent me a more powerful mini PC and monitor which is a bit better. As far as I can tell, you need a powerful graphics card or gaming computer to fully benefit from the apps. Maybe GCN could make a video explaining the various options which could cost far more than the trainer itself.
How's it going so far? Well, I'm finding it really good and it certainly makes me push myself hard. I've never really known how much power I'm putting into the pedals and to see it live in front of me gives me an extra incentive. My average speed and power are both increasing with every ride and it's good to know that the gearing matches my bike exactly so when I get it back out on the road it won't feel much different. As regards a fan, on the advice of the delivery driver (a keen cyclist) I bought two and in this weather they are essential as are the towels. So, rather than cycling maybe 3 times a week, I'm now cycling every day.
van rysel vs Wahoo kickr core
Hi, planning to buy Home trainer but i can t decide.. between kickr core and d900 from van rysel
Kickr core from 2022 and only 2k kms..and the d900 from jan 2k25 nearly 1k km…
Almost same price 300 for kickr core and 325β¬ for d900
Which one shld i choose ? And why ?
wtf are quid?
DO NOT BUY JETBLACK VICTORY. Will spare you the sorted details, but mine suffred a major calibration issue after only 3 months of use. I did all the recommended steps to fix it. The customer service has been just a nightmare. I'm going on a month now of multiple emails of trying to get this covered by the warranty. They keep telling me that someone is going to mail me a USPS label, etc, but one person keeps saying another person wil do it, etc. This has been just an infuriating experience. There is not someone in the US with whom you can speak. There is no online chat w/ an actual agent (just AI). The last option I'll try is to actually call the company in Australia and hope this leads to a satisfactory resolution.
The biggest reason for an indoor trainer is by faaaar safety! When you live in a big city and donβt want to drive for an hour to ride safely is a big advantage
Still using the CycleOps Fluid 2 trainer. Got my Tron bike and am at Level 51. It works. Donβt know any better. I might upgrade this fall.
