Today we are going to Avignon. We’re going there for a wedding. Avignon is a city in the south of France, which is well known for its historical and cultural heritage. It’s a city that is 700 km from Paris and to get there, we will take the train. We are going to take the TGV, the “Train Grande Vitesse”. These are the trains that go very, very fast and to connect Paris to Avignon, it only takes two and a half hours (2h30), two and a half hours to cover 700 km, so it’s quite incredible. Here we go, let’s go! It is the next morning, we have arrived in Avignon. Yesterday, when we arrived at the station, we rented a car, took a rental car and arrived safely at the hotel. The wedding is only this evening, so this morning we have some free time and we are going to go explore Avignon, we are going to go visit Avignon. I put on my hat because it’s very hot outside. It’s super hot, lots of sun, so I put on my hat and sunscreen and off we go. We are in the historic center of Avignon. To come to the historic center from our hotel, it was super convenient. We parked in a large free parking lot outside the historic center and from the parking lot there is also a free shuttle service, organized by the city, which takes you to the old town, to the historic center. The historic center of Avignon is surrounded by ramparts dating from the Middle Ages. It’s super pretty, it’s very well preserved, so we’re going to walk together in the historic center to discover all that. I am standing in front of the Palais des Papes in Avignon, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is called the Palace of the Popes because for a time, in the Middle Ages, in the fourteenth (14th) century, Avignon was the seat of the papacy and nine popes resided in this palace and, moreover, still today, because of this past that I spoke to you about, Avignon is nicknamed “the City of the Popes”. This is the nickname of the city of Avignon, “the City of the Popes”. This palace of the Popes is one of the largest Gothic constructions of the Middle Ages in Europe and it is truly magnificent, at least from the outside. You can see that it is very well preserved. Unfortunately, today, we won’t have time to visit it, but if you ever go to Avignon, I think it’s a must-see and from what I’ve been told, it’s really very beautiful inside and the tour is very well done. We were also recommended to go see the park which is located right next to the Palais des Papes, so that’s what we’re going to do now. In the park, there is a photo exhibition and you can see in the photos that they are actors doing rehearsals for a play or who are between two rehearsals. Another thing you should know about Avignon is that every summer, in July, Avignon hosts one of the most important theater festivals in the world, “the Festival d’Avignon”. During the Avignon Festival, there are dozens of shows in various locations, around the city, often outdoors, in historic monuments and apparently, it’s a really great festival, so if you have the chance to go there, I advise you to do so. From the park, you have a great view of Avignon and the surrounding area and you can see the Rhône river very well. Avignon is located on the banks of the Rhône. You were able to see the famous “Pont d’Avignon”. That’s not its real name, its real name is the Saint-Bénezet bridge, but all French people know it as “Pont d’Avignon” and I think if you ask a French person what it looks like think when you say Avignon to him, he will inevitably answer “au Pont d’Avignon”, because of the song that all children learn from a very young age, “Le Pont d’Avignon”. I’m going to sing it to you. “On the Avignon Bridge, we dance, we dance, on the Avignon Bridge, we dance all around.” Everyone knows this song and therefore everyone knows the Avignon bridge. And maybe you noticed, but actually today, as you can see, the bridge is no longer complete, it no longer crosses the Rhône because it was partially destroyed during floods in the seventeenth (17th) century. I’m getting ready, we’re going to leave soon to go to the wedding. Don’t pay attention to the mess behind me. After our little tour in Avignon, we returned to the hotel, we took a little splash in the swimming pool, that is to say a little swim and then, we rested a little bit and there, we will leave soon. I put on my earrings. We’re going to be late. We absolutely have to go so I’m going to stop the video here. I hope you enjoyed this little day together in Avignon. Tell me in the comments if you have already been to Avignon or if this video made you want to go there. If you liked the video, don’t hesitate to like it, subscribe to the channel for more videos and I’ll see you soon for new videos. Kisses.
