The council has approved plans to address health and mobility disparities between the wealthiest and poorest postcodes in Sheffield.

The ‘Walking Wheeling and Cycling Investment Plan’ will invest £300-400m to enhance safe, active and sustainable travel across the city over the next two decades.

according to the ONS people living in some areas of Sheffield have an average healthy life expectancy of up to 15 years lower than those living in other parts of the city healthy life expectancy refers to the average number of years a person can expect to live in good health this number rests at 55 in some eastern parts of Sheffield compared to over 70 in the southwest of the city sheffield City Council is hoping to tackle this health inequality with its new 300 million pound investment scheme walking wheeling and cycling the new plans span two decades and include improvements ranging from more pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes in the short term to the establishment of a fully integrated active transportation system by 2045 the plan is to improve health by encouraging and making it easier for people to live healthy active lifestyles which incorporate walking and cycling by making the city better connected the council also hopes to ensure equality of opportunity for people who don’t own a car by improving the access to jobs schools green spaces and local services
