A volcanic fissure erupted near Grindavik, Iceland, prompting the evacuation of over 100 people, including tourists at the Blue Lagoon spa. The fissure, measuring up to 1,000 meters, broke through protective barriers and released lava and smoke southeast of the town. The eruption followed more than 130 tremors in the Svartsengi region. Although lava poses no immediate threat to infrastructure, concerns remain over gas emissions and new fissures. Civil defence downgraded the alert to threat level. Grindavik, largely abandoned since volcanic activity resumed in 2023 after 800 years, continues to face instability amid Iceland’s ongoing seismic and volcanic cycle.
