Have you ever wanted to visit an authentic
French town that is not as overcrowded like Paris and Marseilles? Then this video is for you
as I’m going to show you the three best places to visit in Avignon. Welcome to Unexplored, the
channel where I show you lesser known places in Eastern Europe and throughout the world. So
without further Ado here are the three best places to visit in Avignon. No visit to Avignon
is complete without visiting the amazing papal Palace. This colossal building is the largest
Gothic Palace in Europe and was built during the period of the Avignon papacy which lasted
from 1309 to 1376 where the popes decided to reside in Avignon instead of Rome. The palace is
actually not one Palace but two. The old one was built during the reign of Pope Benedict the 12th
in the year 1364 while the new one was built by Pope Clement the 6th and successive popes in
the late 14th century. While strolling through the palace you can only wonder what would have
happened if history took a different turn and the counterpopes of Avignon would have won the
dispute against the papacy of Rome and instead of the Vatican being located today in Rome it would
have been located in Avignon instead. I really like the palace but the most beautiful parts of it
like the chapels and the rooms full of frescos I cannot show you as it is forbidden to film them
so you have to come to see them for yourself The entry fee of the palace is €12. Right next
to the palace lies the Avignon cathedral which is in my opinion the most beautiful Cathedral
of the city. The cathedral is a beautiful mix of the gothic and Romanesque architectural
Styles and was built in the year 1425. During the French Revolution it was heavily damaged
and in 1840 it was renovated in its current state. The best part about the cathedral
is that it is completely free to visit. Lastly we have the Point Saint Benezet. This
bridge once connected the Provence region to the French Kingdom in the Early Middle Ages
until 1644 when the bridge was abandoned and partly destroyed. The remnants of the bridge can
be visited and from there you have a nice view over the old city walls as well as the mighty
Rhone River. On the middle of the bridge ruins lies the Saint Nicholas Chapel which was added
to the bridge in the mid 12th century. To visit the remnants of the bridge as well as parts
of the city walls you have to pay 5 euros. If you enjoyed this video then please
