#GMB #cyclist #roadsafety #hiddencamera

back in April that the broadcaster Jeremy Vine, the famous cyclist, said that he was going to stop posting his cycling videos online because of the abuse and the death threats that he kept receiving. Yeah. That hasn’t stopped fellow cyclist and vigilante Dan Brothewell, who’s on a mission to highlight the dangers on the roads and has even gone as far as to set up secret recordings to catch people behaving badly while driving. Very good morning to you. Good morning. Um, so tell us about why you are a cycling vigilante. Um, yeah, I’m I I don’t think I’m a vigilante. I’m just trying to a campaigner definitely and trying to trying to raise awareness of of uh road danger issues. I suppose the thing is that people call you a vigilante because you’re stepping in, aren’t you, to do what you feel that the council and the police do not seem to be doing. Just tell us about what you see drivers do that makes it a danger to be a cyclist. Yeah. So, I I commute to work by bike and most of my journeys I live in Worcester. Most of my journeys around Worcester by bike. Um and uh it’s it’s certainly a small minority of drivers, but uh yeah, every time I’m out on my bike, I’ll I’ll see um antisocial, dangerous, or illegal activity. So, you set up a secret camera. Yeah. Running what continuously? No, I put this was at one particular location in Worcester outside the railway station um where there seems to be a problem with um uh overranking of taxis and parking and what that then causes is people to overtake those cars into a bike and bus lane. Okay. So, it seemed every time I I cycled on this route, I would have cars driving straight at me and sometimes the drivers giving me abuse um as if it was if it was my fault. So, on that camera, you picked how how many hundred defenses? Yeah. Yeah. So, we put a time-lapse camera up um just looking at the area where it’s a problem and in 24 hours it was over 300 offenses. And have you passed that information on to the police? I didn’t pass it on to the police. No, I raised it with the council. Um yeah, I don’t think it’s necessarily a police issue. It seems to be more a design issue. Um so I see. So you’re not actually trying to get the people that you spotted clearly breaking the law. You’re not trying to get them into trouble. No. You’re using what they’re doing to demonstrate to the council that they need to do more to sort the thing out. Cuz you see, people hate vigilantes. You know that, don’t you? There’s a guy in London called Cycling Mikey who actually does film people, you know, like talking on their phones usually behind the wheel when they’re parked up at traffic lights. He’s he’s nab quite a few famous people actually and he sends the information to the police and they get prosecuted. Now, a lot of people support him, but a lot of people can’t stand him and they say, “You want to do that job? Be a traffic warden. Be a copper.” And people might still say that about you. If you want to catch people out and send the footage to the council, be a traffic warden, be a copper. Uh, yeah. As I say, I’m just trying to raise awareness of a problem. I mean, I I have submitted evidence to to the police. Um, I don’t think that makes me a vigilante. That’s just providing evidence of a crime to the police and the police take action if they think that’s necessary. I just wanted to I mean I know that you um don’t post very much on social media but when Jeremy Vine did he received comments that he said genuinely upset him and the trolling just got too much and he had to stop posting. Just a couple of examples. A motorist that um another said that they hoped the next motorist he confronted would kick your traitor head in. And someone else said, “It may be terrible, but I hope he falls under the wheels of five cars that reverse and make sure the job’s done.” Why have we got this animosity between people who just need to share the road safely? I I honestly I don’t understand it. I don’t understand the culture war and I don’t understand why it’s stoked up because a lot of motorists are cyclists. Yeah. A lot of cyclists. I mean, no it and we all want to stay safe and what you’re doing is trying to point out just how you and fellow cyclists can stay safe, but what is it that there’s there’s just bitterness between the two groups? Yeah, I don’t know. I mean, it’s central government policy to have 50% of journeys by walking or cycling by 2030 and that filters down to Worcester County Council and Worershare, Worcester City Council. Um, but I just don’t think we’re doing enough to enable and encourage that to happen. And fundamentally, Worcester is a 15-minute city. You can get from the center to the outskirts in 15 minutes by bike. Moving people around in two-ton metal boxes, it seems incredibly efficient. Inefficient. Inefficient. Okay. Well, you’ve submitted shedloads of evidence to the council and they’ve told us this, both Worcester City Council and Worcester City. Well, they didn’t tell us anything. They didn’t want to comment. They didn’t want to comment uh on the issue. They refused to give us a statement. But in a previous statement, Worcester City Council said, “We can only enforce at the times when we are present.” Right. So, they’re just basically backing away from what you’ve done, aren’t they? You going to keep doing it? Uh, I I I think this has been a really good platform and I appreciate the the opportunity to to raise the awareness and I’m hoping I I get back to us and have some sensible conversations about the problem. Okay. All right. Thank you very much indeed. Thank you.

  1. what give cyclists the right to slow down vehicles behind them riding 2 aside riding at a below the speed limit when people have to get to work on time

  2. Why do you start the interview labelling this guy a Vigilante? He's clearly a reasonable person who is trying to highlight a problem to the council. Good on him.

  3. Pity cyclist don't keep to the highway code. One jumped the red light and I nearly knocked him down he tried to blame me. Typical cyclist wasn't even worth arguing with him

  4. Seems reasonable on the time lapse… It seems that the council have taken out parking bays where they are clearly necessary. It's a danger to everyone. Fair play. Cyclists who are aggressive and break the law themselves or antagonise to provoke are a problem. Dan seems very fair. Worcester is no match for London etc. Perhaps do one for a comparison.

  5. Jeremy Vine said he was upset by online comments, how do you think Alex Belfield felt when he called him the jimmy savile of trolling for sending just 30 emails over a ten year period.

  6. I'm from Worcester, and this guy's a vigilante, right? He never busted out-of-town Ubers for parking in taxi spots, but he's been going after hackneys for it. Maybe he should chat with our association and hear us out before he keeps targeting us. Yeah, there's a problem because the Worcester council isn't stopping cross-border stuff and letting illegal things happen. Total double standard.
