[Ep. 1065] Take a real-time ride along the Velostrada, a 9.6 km high-quality cycling route connecting The Hague and Leiden in South Holland, the Netherlands. This route is part of the regional network of fast cycling connections and is used by commuters and recreational cyclists alike.
Filmed in May 2025 from the handlebars, this video gives a direct and unedited view of the full ride, showing the cycling infrastructure, surroundings, tunnels, crossings, and shared-space sections.
The Velostrada is designed to offer a comfortable and direct alternative to car travel on the A4 and A44. Although not a perfect cycling motorway, it provides a good link between cities and has been improved over time — with more upgrades still planned.
🔸 Length: 9.6 km
🔸 Ride time: 27 minutes
🔸 Route: Voorburg (The Hague) to the edge of Leiden

  1. This cycle route would have been considered almost perfect, almost the entire route is a 2 way bicycle lane or a cycle street. But for me just the fact that you need to get to share a tunnel with cars and a painted bicycle gutter is enough to say that this route is simply not up to standard.

  2. 25 minutes? That's not enough to get from the inner city to the suburb I grew up in. In Stockholm, Sweden. I love how different distances and places are perceived even in countries that in so many ways are very similar.

  3. 15:55 Seeing older people with their scootmobiles always makes me proud. In many countries you don't have this freedom when you can't drive a car.
18:33 Even got a trailer so he can go fish. 😁🤩

  4. It's a nice cycle path but in Leiden it dumps you on the Haagweg which is a pretty awful place to cycle. Leiden cycling infrastructure is crap in general really.

  5. Overall the Dutch looked the fittest nation, and by extension the best looking, on my cycle trips across Europe.
I don't recall a Velostrada on the way from Leiden to Hoek van Holland but it was very easy to ride. 🇳🇿
