In this episode of Learn to Ride, we walk through everything you need to know about the CBT — Compulsory Basic Training — the first legal step to riding a motorcycle or scooter on UK roads. Whether you’re 16 and aiming to ride a 50cc moped, or 17+ and looking to get on a 125cc motorbike or scooter, this video explains how the CBT works, what it allows you to ride, and how to get the most out of your training day.

We go through each element of the CBT in detail, from the safety talk and basic controls to the on-road riding section. Along the way, we share best practices, common mistakes to avoid, and tips to help you stay calm, focused, and confident. It’s all about turning up prepared and knowing what the instructors are looking for.

We also break down the licensing rules clearly: at 16, a CBT lets you ride a 50cc moped with L plates. At 17 and above, you can ride a 125cc — either manual or automatic — again with L plates, no theory test needed. The CBT doesn’t give you a full licence, but it’s valid for two years and opens the door to bigger bikes through the A1, A2, or full A routes later on.

This episode is your complete guide to the CBT — not just how to pass it, but how to get the most out of it as a new rider. Whether you’re booked in or just planning ahead, this is the best place to start.

  1. Did it two months ago. My tips. Start doing shoulder checks straightaway, every time you pull away. Make them second nature.
Keep your eyes up, look where you are going, not at the ground or the controls.
Keep hydrated and take snacks. A banana, chocolate to keep your blood sugar up.
If you're not sure, ask. Or if you want to do it again, say.
If you can do a two day, it takes the pressure off.
If youre struggling, change to a scooter, less to think about.
Lastly, enjoy it. The only time you can ride a bike all day, drop it and no one cares 😂👍

If I can do it, anyone can.
