I document my first bike ride in Portugal from Tires to Guincho Beach, a journey of 17km and then ride back. On the way there I stop at Devil’s Mouth, an oddity in the coastal rocky terrain and try Portuguese Beer for the first time and see what Portuguese tarts taste like in Portugal. Then it’s off to Guincho Beach and I was impressed with the terrain on the way. I also encountered bad cramps and at points couldn’t walk! A ride to remember…..!

I visit places in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, some known, some off the beaten path. Towns, parks, nature, buildings, and whatever that is interesting to me. I will be including other places in Malaysia soon, but for now, I’m exploring all I can closer to home. I am 66 (as of 2025) and intend to explore this world in my third lifetime.

Hi. Today my mission is very simple. Just to ride to Guincho Beach, passing Devil’s Mouth. I’m going to document the whole thing. Riding on a bicycle. Wish me luck. So, the first thing I have to get used to is riding on this bike cuz it’s uh my son’s mother’s bike. So, I’ve been riding around um just this block to uh get used to the gear shift and see what it does so that when I encounter a steep hill, I don’t put it in the wrong gear and run out of steam and uh topple over. The next thing is getting used to controlling the bike. Uh the seat’s a lot higher than I expected it to be. So, I managed to uh secure the phone via rubber bands. Thank god for rubber bands. And that’s got my route by uh Google Maps. And uh I’m going to start it with the cycle mode on. So I’m going by modes by bicycle. Okay. Anyway, let’s goo. Okay. So here I am on the road and uh I’m following Google Maps up this first challenge of uh mine which is the uh hill. though, but Google Maps is leading me, but it’s raining a bit. So, uh, hope it doesn’t get too heavy because I have to put away the GoPro if that’s the case. So, oo, I can already feel it in my legs. But I felt stuff in my legs before. And the first thing I want to do really is to find a supermarket so I can buy some sauces or some some sort of shoritzo because I want to get get that for energy. cuz I know I’ll need it. It’s already uphill and it’s not too bad at the moment. I’m glad that the gears and this bicycle’s working properly. Oops. I don’t want to do that. Okay. I had a bit of trauma there because uh I couldn’t shift into a easier gear up the hill. And I can tell you my legs are burning and I certainly do need to get to a supermarket quickly to get some uh supplies. Seems like a nice neighborhood going downhill, which is always good. [Applause] [Music] Getting used to the gears. Okay. Some cobbled a cobbled thingyama jig. Whoa. Okay. I can’t figure this thing out. It’s in the gears. Seems to go one way and it goes the other. Nice. It’s a small little stream over here. [Applause] Okay. Okay, a bit of a tricky junction where uh there’s a traffic light and pointed to one way and everybody’s got to go up the same way and I’m on a bicycle so I want to get up there as quick as I can not to stop the traffic behind me so that uh I can be fast enough. And I made it. Yay. Good job, Ken. My thighs, they’re keeping up. Not too bad for somebody with no training. So, I’m happy. But I’m also happy for the downhills. Pretty pretty. Come on, miss. That’s the thing about uh nice about uh Portugal is they let you go. They’re very wary about letting people go first and rights of way. So far, that’s what I’ve noticed. So, that’s good. [Music] Oh, well, I ran out of breath and I’m pushing the bike up this slope because I ran out of steam. So, this is not the easiest hill climb. Okay, so I think uh I got time lapse for the some of it, but I made it up to the top of the hill. I’m taking a bit of break, some water. No kidding. That was tough. And I wasn’t even even cycling up the hill. Okay, let’s go. Get into gear. Yeah. Yeah. Good. Why did I have to climb all this way up and then go back down? Pray tell. Oh, look. The ocean. Can you see it? Are you on Make sure the video’s on. Got to capture this one. Yeah. Do you see it? Look at that. Is that beautiful? But we got to stop here because it’s too beautiful not to. Look at that. Isn’t that beautiful? Oh, look at the sea. Okay, we’re going all the way down. Ready? Let’s go. Lovely, huh? question is, could I get used to Portugal? I think I could. I mean, maybe not so much uh in the city or in a town. Maybe on the outskirts I could cuz I I do like the countryside, but not necessarily the towns and stuff. So, I want to take a right. Let’s go. And it’s downhill. Can’t remember what time it started, but it’s already uh 1:00 20 1. So, don’t know uh how long it take me to get back. I’m glad the brakes work cuz if the brakes don’t work, man, just screwed. For the once of a better forward, follow the word. Uh-oh. Uphill again. Why? Oops. Come on. Let’s go. Okay, I want to take a left. It says a left. There’s no left. Oh, I’ve missed the turn. But there’s no turn over there. Oh, I guess I could go down there. Can I go down there? I don’t know. It’s a pedestrian. Huh? So, I wonder if I can take the bike down here. It’s a pedestrian place, but I’ll have a look. Yes, I can. Let’s do this. [Music] Let’s wait for everybody to go. Let’s go. Thank you, Google Maps. Yeah, this is nice. Thank you, Google Maps. Now we onto the bike path. Look at this. Coming down to the sea. Oh my goodness, this is amazing. Okay, so first stop. What stop is this? No idea. Wow, look at this. Don’t know what beach this is, but I think I’ll have to send a photo. There’s a castle up there. Look at that. I wonder what castle that is. But that’s not my mission today. My mission is to go to Devil’s Mouth. Look at the coastline. Wow. Beautiful, huh? We made it to the coast. Okay. So, what I’m going to do is I’m going to ride on this prominard for as far as I can cuz I’ve seen some bicycles do it. And then uh when I can’t cycle any further on this place, then I’m going to find the uh bicycle route. I still haven’t found my supermarket. So uh that’s a bit uh of a bummer, but I’m sure I’ll find one on the way. Pretty sure anyway. So we shall see. But in the meantime, this is what it’s like on this. I think it’s called Kashka. And uh as you can see, everybody’s like having lunch and stuff. A uh place for uh you can do some pull-ups. That’s good. But it’s not going all the way down. He should be going all the way down. It’s only doing half pull-ups, which for me is cheating. But it’s better than nothing, I guess. Well, I can smell the sea and it certainly smells some muscles. The smell of the sea, huh? Yeah. So, the other day I was uh texting a friend and I told her the water was cold and she said uh how cold was it? So, I did some research and the day that I was looking at the temperatures, it was saying it was 17.7° centigrade in the sea in the ocean when it was 22 uh on uh on land. So, that’s quite cold, you know. I mean, after all, 17, can you imagine? I mean, I haven’t done 17 before. Well, I did. The first time I did was uh obviously uh then so when I took my thing, but like I say, I’m surprised that the Atlantic Ocean is so clear. [Music] So, it’s nice and stuff. It’s a nice coal coastal route. Wow, look at this. This is lovely. We have to stop for stop for a uh break and have a look. Let’s have a look. Look at that. [Music] Okay, let’s wait till we get to the Devil’s Mouth or uh La or Guincho Beach. Is this the castle? Is it for real? What castle is this? No idea. [Music] nice place for street photos, but unfortunately I think it might be typical of uh Portugal that you don’t actually take photos because um I know for a fact that uh I’ve seen some videos and people were very very sort of uh wary of uh people making videos and uh the guy had to say, “Oh, I’m making a video of me and not of you.” So, I think it might be typical of uh Portugal. But look at the sea. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Okay, so there’s no sign saying I can’t go down there for bicycle. So, I’m going to go down there at the bicycle and see if I get stopped. I get stopped. Uh yeah, it’s it’s easy enough to get down, I guess. [Music] Anyway, we’ll get there before anybody is able to stop us. [Music] This is nice. [Music] Oh, off the cliff. Off the [Applause] All right. Let’s have a look. [Music] Don’t you fall, bicycle. Well, okay. You can fall if you want. All right. Seems quite deep here. Don’t like the looks of that water. Looks murky. Don’t know why, but this this side of uh the coast seems to be a bit murkier. The other side uh was a lot better, but this side seems it seaweed or something that’s coloring the water. I don’t know. Okay, so apparently Devil’s Mouth is uh following this coastal route and there’s some fit girls around, you know. I’m following this one. [Music] [Music] [Music] Okay. Got to negotiate this place carefully. Make sure I don’t topple over and uh injure any pedestrians or myself. or worse still cause an accident. Thank you. Very narrow. Who knows? Let’s push the bike, shall we? I think that’s the better way of doing it. So therefore, I’m a pedestrian, too. Wow. They have an Indian restaurant here. Sveners, drinks, square melons. people taking photos. [Music] I mean, ever since I experienced that uh thing of uh Wow. Nice. So, I don’t know where this place is or what it is, but it’s niceish. [Music] Reminds me a bit of Greece where you have that uh famous street of things selling souvenirs and stuff. Am I on track? Yes, I am. I’m exactly on track. So, I need to get a cat, but I think it would be very expensive here. I like those cups. Everybody’s got the cameras out. I guess this is a touristy place. It’s enough. [Music] Do I feel compelled to take any shots? No, I don’t. [Music] Yeah, I don’t. I feel as though I ought to, but Oh, this is nice. Look at that. Guess I feel compelled to take a photo, but only if I can took straight photos. Uh, and that’s deliberately taking photos of uh people. So, I don’t think that’s the best idea. [Music] Okay. So, where is this Devil’s God then? [Music] Okay. So apparently I’m still on the way there and uh I’ve not seen so much uh so many uh beaches like this as cades for uh what I would think would be tourists because it seems to be like it. I mean I don’t know. I can’t find it to be of any interest to me for some reason. Don’t ask me why. I just find it just boring. As my son would say, boring. So this place for me is boring. Really? [Music] All right, let’s walk like a pedestrian, shall we? [Music] I think we’re coming. Oh, look at this. This is lovely. Yeah. On the way to the Devil’s Mouth, we have a dedicated bicycle path, which is lovely. Bit windy, but that’s okay. [Music] Look at this. Don’t want to be falling in there. Okay. Well, I’ve locked the bike up. I’ve got my special pants on. [Music] Now, let’s see what this place is like. Devil’s mouse. [Music] Let’s go this way. [Music] [Music] [Music] So that’s The mouth of the devil. [Music] Let’s go around here and see what it’s like. [Music] [Applause] [Music] I do your name. [Music] [Music] Well, I would say that’s pretty spectacular. Really? [Music] [Laughter] Can you? Sorry. Excuse me. Thank you. [Music] It’s goo. Let’s see what it’s like down there. [Music] [Music] Okay. [Music] All right. So, we’re descending into the uh throat of the devil’s mouth. How dramatic into the belly of the devil. Let’s have a look. I mean, the Atlantic Ocean really always amazes me. It always intrigues me. [Music] [Music] salt deposits, I’m guessing, as well as it white and looking like crystallized salt. More fishing. Nice. I like this space. I could live around here. It’s more my kind of thing. [Music] [Applause] Okay, so I’m actually trying the uh national beer which is called a super brock. And of course, how can you not try a Portuguese tart when you’re in Portugal? Okay, let me arrange this so you can see what I’m doing. Okay. Well, so here it goes. Portuguese tart. I don’t even know how much this cost. Well, I don’t know if this is typical of Portuguese tarts in Portugal, but it tastes nothing like the stuff that you get in Malaysia or England. So, this is a real Portuguese salt. Why does it taste different? [Music] It’s very sweet. Okay, let’s try the beer super broth, which is the uh Portuguese beer. [Music] That’s nice. Yeah, I’m set here. [Music] Okay. Well, I’m going to finish this and get on our way to Guincho Beach. So now off to Gento Beach, which is our last destination on this particular escapade. And I think it says 24 minutes away. And then after that, we just head straight back and have a hardy meal because I’m hungry. And uh you know, whenever I eat carbs like tarts and stuff, doesn’t do it for me. I’m still not full. And the beer is nice, of course. I always like a cold beer on a hot day. It’s not particularly hot today, but uh I was thirsty and I drank it like I drank water. So, there we go. It’s getting a bit hot now cuz the sun’s up. My thighs are really hurting. And uh I really don’t know how much longerh I’ll be able to pedal uphill. [Music] Wa. I’m glad it’s going downhill, but I don’t look forward to the journey back cuz there’s some hills to climb. And there are many castles and I’m sure they are quite uh historical but I don’t know anything about them at the moment. So, I found a different way of paddling. Instead of using the middle of my foot or the toes of my foot, I’m using the heels. And it seems as though it’s exercising a different set of muscles, so it’s not so hard. So, I think uh my idea about uh carrying my son on the bicycle is not a good idea. And somebody suggested a knee bike. I think that’s the way to go if ever I decide to take my son on the bike. But as for now, oh, it’s tough. So, what I’m doing is I’m picking up some cones for my son cuz I know that if I don’t pick them up now, I probably won’t pick them up at all. 12 minutes away on this uh uneventful ride. It’s not that pretty over here. Look at those huge cones. Wow. My son would like one of those, I’m sure. Should I go nick one? I shall go nick one because it has to be done. Let’s do it quickly because my phone’s on the bike. I don’t want my bike to be stolen. But I do want to get one of these ones because it’s huge. Look at that. My son would love it. Let’s go. Done it. Yeah. 9 minutes away. Hope it doesn’t rain. Look at this beautiful blossoming of flowers. I don’t believe it. That’s amazing. [Music] I mean, really, look at this. There’s nothing much for me to say except that it’s beautiful. Look, it’s just everywhere. Look at this. There’s stretches everywhere. That’s just beautiful. I love it. Look at that. It’s all in blossom. Beautiful, huh? [Applause] Looks pretty pretty and I’m sure it’s pretty historical as well, but I know nothing about it. So, I just went through a sand patch and uh I’m very wary of sand patches because uh they’re very slippery. And look at this. The I guess the wind’s been blowing the uh sand. So, we got to get through this. Not easy. Can be done though. Oopsie. Okay, let’s push it through cuz I’m stuck. Let’s go. Oh, my legs hurt. My thighs. They’re seizing up. Will I be able to get back? I don’t know. Whoa. I think I need some magnesium. That’s what I need. Where do I get magnesium from? Okay, as long as I’m in this position, I’m okay. But I really do need to get some magnesium because I think otherwise I will seize up. 2 minutes to Green Jaw Beach. Come on, Green Jaw Beach. Now, this road here is uh gravel. It’s not even built. So, I think I’m going to have to cross the road here. [Music] All right. So, lock the bike up. Let’s go. mucho seems. So, this has been the objective of seeing the Devil’s Mouth and getting to Guincho Beach, which is by far the siest beach I’ve seen. Look at the sand dunes. And it seems as though it’s, you know, sand dunes over the road. Like I said, it’s just like a [Music] like a different world. It’s like flowers there and sand. [Music] That was pretty good. But look at that sand everywhere. Okay, good. I can use the toilet because I didn’t really want to pay for the toilet the last time because this is it. It’s nice cuz it’s not the busiest beach. Sand dunes everywhere. I could have gone right right up to that side, but ah waves are pretty big. Look at that. [Music] But this way is like uh sand. Look at that sand everywhere. [Music] Well, I’m taking a break cuz my legs has seized up and I can’t cycle but and I can walk but slowly at least it’s not as bad as just now. But look at this. Isn’t this beautiful in the evening? Okay, so I hope you enjoyed that. Thanks for watching. Take care. Bye-bye.
