DAY 1 – Seyðisfjörður]
10.04.2024
We were very eager to get on the bikes and start our Icelandic adventure, but we were immediately faced with a challenge. The mountain pass connecting Seyðisfjörður with the rest of the island was open to traffic for the first time in a while, but we also heard it described as ‘barely passable by car, impossible on a bike’. So, bus it is!
With the bikes stuffed into a trailer we quickly took off. And what a ride it was! Seeing so many cars having trouble with the climb we quickly understood the road truly couldn’t be done by bike. Even on the bus it was a bumpy ride, the bikes especially barely survived. But, in the end we safely made it to Egilsstaðir and began the bike ride around Iceland.
The icy roads didn’t make for easy cycling, but it felt great to finally be moving again. Surrounded by snow and with temperatures around freezing all day we only managed around 35 km, but we ended the day with the first wild camp in Iceland, and with a really beautiful view at that!
