A day off for me, so what to do…? Go and watch a few blokes and lasses on bikes…at 1900m! 😮‍💨

The WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series was in Town, just a few Km’s from home (in Andorra). Unfortunately I’m back in full training which meant I only had time to get to the XCO event this afternoon, but the Downhill (mad bastards) and XC Short track were on Friday and Saturday. 🤩

Anyway, thanks to WHOOP for getting me in (check out our link below 👇🏻), what a day! And well worth a visit if you’re anywhere near one of the events in future. A little different to road, but much more like a World Champs event with laps, a circuit, good food, music and entertainment galore. 😎

Tom Pidcock was a late announcement to the start list, and as reigning Olympic Champ, former World Champ and general off-rode guru and living not far from the venue, it was good to see him cutting about and absolutely whacking it around this pretty intense course 💪🏻

Thank you very much. Heat. Heat. Now then shorts fans, welcome to another vlog. We’re here today giving VIP tickets thanks to the lovely people from Whoop who sponsored the event. That’s Pal Aaron Soul uh ski resort and we’re here to watch the uh round of the mountain bike world cup and this is cool. This is so different to road racing. This is like so chill, so relaxed. Look, these boys just rocking around. The food that they’re doing in the village like the pa so cool. Such a different vibe to what I’m used to. So yeah, I’ll take you along for the journey. I think the men go off in about 15 20 minutes. The women have just finished. I think best place Brit was Eevee Alice in six. I think um yeah, this is something I’m so unacustomed to. The actual resort I think there is about 1900 m. Um so it’s quite high. You can see all the track goes all the way up here, all the way down here, down this stuff, all the way to start and finish. But yeah, I’ve come to see Tom. Come to sport pity tea today. Um, haven’t seen him yet, but I know he’s been out and about training. Saw him the other day. So, uh, I think he he’s up for it to this point in time. Who else is here that we know? We know that many people actually. so sort of alien to me. Um it’s such a good atmosphere. Like people brought their families in a picnic chilling chilling on the side of the mountain and yeah, it’s kind of cool. So yeah, see what see what happens. Oh, there’s Tom. That’s it. They’re off. I think I’d just about be coming through about now, maybe. Look at everyone running. Everyone just hit the big switch. Everyone running to try and get to this deck section. I’m going to go up here. I think I’ve got time. I’m going to gamble. front. This is mental. They’ve got like this porch with like a massive telescopic arm. Check this thing out. Hopefully nothing on toward for the Frenchman. Pedcock though. Out for a Sunday ride. Three fastest laps. Yep. Tell me that doesn’t slap different to road racing. Like nobody has a Porsche with a telescopic arm on it. And they’re all using drones here as well. Yeah, that was impressive. These boys are not hanging around. They Some of them they are like there sort of like you can see like two or three runs and you can see some of them trying to send it down a faster line down the outside to try and make up a few places early on taking a few risks near like the tires slashing it slacking on rocks and stuff. This is cool. This is adrenaline filled. Like the buzz the buzz you get from it for me. hours like better than watching a road race when they just sweep by. But each their own. Um so what I’m probably going to do now is go to the next pit, next section of the course, head back probably via the um uh I don’t know what you call that area where all the start and finishes, all the teepeees and all the free biz and stuff. Um wants to sample the local the local delicacies. So, uh, yeah, I’m going to go and find out find out what that is. Go look at another part of the course. I also want to see some big drop offs, that kind of stuff. Some rock gardens, more. So, uh, find out where they are. Right. So, sound like they’re coming around again. Come to watch them come down this big wooden ramp thing. it looks terrifying. They’re going to come flying down there. God knows God knows what speed they’re going to be coming down at. So, But it seems to be the place to be. Like everyone’s Oh, the drones up. Guess if there is something going on with that Canail, just keep an eye on the time gaps between these two. Packing my way back up now. just seen uh him go through for the second time. Looks like Tom moved up a fair few places. He looked like he was potentially in top 10 now. Um having a good day. Sam Gay looked like he was having a bit of a bit of a shocker. He didn’t look too far up, which is disappointing, but uh yeah, hard work just walking up these, let alone riding. Some of the costumes getting here. Outrageous. Outrageous. Thomas made his way to second. said 30 minutes in, five laps to go. Tom’s got a at least a 26 second lead with Martin. Charlie Aldridge is in fourth. He’s rocking the Cannondale. See him at Canondale Factory Racing is currently a 26 second. He’s not far off a podium. So, here he is. Charlie Aldridge. Big old boy. But I tell you what, these boys seem bigger than than uh road racers. They just seem so much more powerful, so much more explosive. Like so so impressive what they’re doing. Best seat in the house. Made my way to the uh VIP section. uh with Woot uh kindly kindly invited me. Got my pink pink wristband to go along with my pink whoop. I got a hell of a view from the top. Going to hopefully probably stay here and watch the finish. I got the prime view of the finish line just here. But I’m going to go and see if I can make the most of uh varying different uh picky bits. Tell you what, guys, this is phenomenal. This chocolate and Bailey’s ice cream section. I can see the race here. Cannot thank W enough for this. This is incredible. You guys ever want to watch the mountain biking? This is definitely the place to do it from. This is Mrs. Shorts. You’re making a mess. Look, that’s the best Stilton I’ve ever seen. Yeah, that’s incredible. Massive Melbourne Stilton. And this paella over here pop. It’s It’s so impressive. It’s absolutely gorgeous food as well. That’s it. 20 seconds. Filled myself. My body weight in uh ice cream from uh the VIP section and the two laps to go now. Tom’s got a minute over Martin and then in third and then Charlie Oldridge minute 28 in fourth. So I’m going to head over to the other side of the course now. Have a look. What’s it Mrs. Shorts? What have you got Ellie? A iced caramel latte with oat milk. Oat milk. Iced caramel latte with only oat milk. Right. Let’s go find the other side of this door. Come on, Tom. Keep going. Go on, lad. Interesting new kit design. He’s just absolutely owned it. He’s risen off. He’s got such a big lead now. Oh yeah, he must be about ready to start lapping back. Marcus as well now. So I think he takes the bell this time. Um so we’re going to run over try and get to the finish. Try and see him see him get his hands in the air. Um yeah, second place isn’t even inside. Oh, here we are. Here’s Martan and the French national champs jersey just about to come under the uh pass the Red Bull banner. Sweet looking cannon day. Oh, here’s Charlie Aldridge. Here he is. Go on, lad. Dig in. He’s a big big unit. Big strong boy. Not sure when he he got into third, but good on him. He’s doing super well. These boys as well nearly 2,000 meters, so the ear is a bit thinner here. Um, so yeah, get to the finish and try and uh try and see Tom in that new Olympic champion Q365 kit. Uh, take the win. I learned this the other day as well. It’s 365 because supposedly 36.5 is your optimum optimum core body temperature, which is what they name their clothing brand after apparently. Here we go. One more. I think he’s proving today why he’s a Olympic champion and worth 6 million quite a year or whatever it is. Proved he’s worth every penny of it today. He uh rocks up to road races and shows the roadies how to do it and then rocks up to these mountain bike races and shows these specialist mountain bike boys how to do it as well. So, got to take your hat off to him now, haven’t you? So, yeah, let’s go get our spot on the finish and uh hopefully see him come in and get his hands in the air. I’ve got my place on the finish line. That was the uh the VIP section where we just had lunch, but I decided I’m going to watch from here. We’ve got a pretty good uh pretty good space in the fish line, right next to the television camera. So, uh, yeah, with any luck, I’ll get a good shot of him getting his arms in the air. There’s 35th, 36th, 37th, 4 minutes, 50 now. So, uh, these boys going to be out there for at least another 25, 30 minutes maybe. Uh, one lap to go. I don’t know what they’re laughing in. I think they did about they will finish it about an hour and 20 to an hour and a half. Um, see all the the media VIP people in their vest. So was offered one of them. Wish wish had taken it now. I could have swung around looking like not just a not just a a roadie with a with a camera. So uh yeah, common place on the finish line and then uh with any luck on Pity T will keep it rubber side down and um take his take a nice win in his uh his new Q3 six kit and then I think it’s a race for the gondola and get home. I don’t know what happens. I don’t know what I don’t know what mountain biking protocol is. the once again remaster here in the hinge round by the for the county factory team. The two young men are going to go two and three with the Charlie. Hallelujah. I was very satisfied. So I was an incredible race.
