so you want a cycling computer that’s great there are loads of good options in 2025 but the one that you probably want isn’t even that new I’m going to take you through the options and let you know why I would or wouldn’t buy each one and let’s start with [Music] Garmin the latest Garmin Edge 1050 is garmin’s most expensive to date at $700 it’s got a few new features like a group ride function so your mates don’t get lost when you drop them and a road hazard function to point out potholes to other users but honestly this is one I’d miss most of the new features won’t actually start working properly until a bunch of new people actually start using them and to do that they need this unit while it’s so expensive you might as well just go for the 1040 most of the same features 130 quid cheaper it’s still got a massive screen if you want that and from using this over the past year and a bit I can tell you the battery life is excellent Garmin claims 35 hours with demanding use so that’s running the Dual Band GPS and a few sensors now unless you’re a pro that’s going to mean just over 2 weeks of riding between charges well it does for me anyway if you don’t live somewhere with loads of sunshine like the UK honestly I promise it’s not like this every day then I wouldn’t bother with the solar version that by the way will be a theme for the next computer too but this 1040 is really good if you want a big device with a big screen [Music] size moving on we have the edge 840 this is basically the 1040 in a smaller form factor and of the two it’s the one I prefer for Road riding it’s just a bit necer on my bars and I think the screen size is big enough for loads of data and a clear M this is the solar version which I tested and again I wouldn’t bother with it now on my video review there were a few of you mostly based in the southern states of the US I think where the sun always shines who said that the tech really really works for you and that’s great if you live somewhere where the tech is going to work and you want to spend the money then you do it it’s just for me it didn’t really provide much value anyway I love using the UI on this thing it’s fast enough to get going and navigating pages is easy I like little things like the music controls because I tend to just leave this screen on when I go for a ride these days there’s also good add-ons like I’ve got my core temperature sensor data just here it’s worth noting though this UI was really designed for touch screens I had the edge 542 but didn’t get around to reviewing it it’s really similar to this internally with just a couple of spec downgrades but the key thing is it doesn’t have a touchscreen now some of you will love that but I found the buson navigation with this UI was was quite clunky like it was an afterthought for Garmin still 350 quid for this which is a darn sight cheaper than the three we’ve just looked at and before we leave garmin’s Road performance range a quick shout out to what is still Ashland’s favorite computer and it’s our pick it’s the edge 830 this thing boasts a great screen good mapping solid battery life and a nice form factor now annoyingly this has now moved to garmin’s discontinued list so it is getting a bit tricky to find for sale online still if you can find one it’s the Garmin weed recommend that’s not to say it’s perfect these comments landed on our gear of the Year video there are definitely some issues with the 830 but there are with alltech really the Garmin Edge explore 2 is still loaded with a compelling set of features for most Riders ease of use and setup are all huge plus points too thanks to garmin’s improved interface a clear and detailed screen and dependable re-rooting The Standard Version tested here doesn’t get the power pins in the quarter turn Mount so the fact that it can’t be upgraded to use the power pack is a shame we’d really like to have seen this be a possible upgrade pathway at this price rather than forcing you to spend 90 more for the option the emission of connectivity to both Shimano di2 and RAM access Drive trains might be a snag but it’s not likely to be a deal breaker for most [Music] right on to some Wahoos now starting with the element Ace and it’s wind sensing front end now I’ve had a little bit of time on this unit and while Ash thought it was actually quite good in my opinion it just misses the mark which is annoying because I was so excited when I saw the leaked images of this yes they’ve done a great job with the touchcreen and they delivered what a lot of Wahoo fans were asking for namely a bigger and better display they’ve even made that UI super nice to use and the app is still a strong point but it was released unfinished and with too many key features yet to be launched now my opinion differs from Ash but the headwind sensor is just a big gripe for me I just don’t get who is genuinely going to find this useful if it’s windy out which today it isn’t well you can feel it nor can you analyze this data on third party apps like strawber you’ll need to do that in the Wahoo app now Wahoo says that the wind sensor could eventually be used for some drag calculations giving you a little bit of live AO data but there’s no dates set for this upgrade there are still some issues with certain units I went out with Jamie Williams from Road CC and his wouldn’t connected GPS it refused to show him any distance it disconnected from his parameter and he can’t upload a ride unless he connects it to his computer our unit is fine I have to say but it doesn’t really fill me with confidence it’s also absolutely massive with continuing compatibility issues on bike computer mounts so really there are still too many things wrong here for me to recommend it and that’s a massive [Music] shame thankfully Wahoo’s element roome and bolt V twos continue to be absolutely excellent options starting with the ram which I think size-wise kind of sits between the Garmin Edge 1040 and the 840 which I think is a nice little compromise my favorite trick that Wahoo uses is perfect Zoom which is controlled via the two buttons here hit the upper side button and you reduce the number of fields displayed and increase their size you can display just your single highest priority data item such as power if you want the lower side button has the reverse effect that makes it easy to tailor your display on the fly to see a smaller or larger selection of data fields without needing to fiddle with screen and field dimensions in the phone app this also works way better on the map Pages than Garmin Zoom buttons I really like this a lot and speaking of maps following a route is dead easy because the map is really clear but if you’re trying to select a point to route to the lack of a touchcreen makes the process well quite slow that said it’s still a brilliant device but it’s not my favorite Wahoo that is still the bolt V2 this thing does everything that most of us want it to it’s small it’s light it displays your data and then it allows you to analyze that data the battery life stands at a decent 15 hours and again routes are easy to follow I have to say I’m really Keen to see a new Bolt from Wahoo this year I’ve had a few occasional rides on it and I absolutely love it and I have to say that my friends are big fans too but and this might be controversial with wah Hooligans I’d like to see it get the touchscreen from the latest Ace I’d also like it to lose the convex buttons and the forehead lights because I want Wahoo to make the bolt with a proper edgo Edge display keep the form factor small but give me a properly sized screen do that and I think it will blow Garmin out of the water hammerhead’s latest KW is well worth a look if you use a stram access group set and you’re quite a techy person though because Shimano isn’t playing nicely with all the other children it doesn’t work brilliantly for di2 users mapping on here is excellent and hammerhead was actually the first brand to give us a climbing feature to help you Pace your efforts uphill I still really love the way Hammerheads climb program looks and works in fact I’d say I prefer it quite a bit over Gins but the one real annoyance for me of every kuu I’ve used is that it’s so slow and I don’t get why let’s side by side boot this up next to the 840 now the ram has doubled to 4 gig and the processor has nearly doubled in speed to 2 GHz so why is this thing taking so long to get going oh and that’s assuming that the unit isn’t doing one of its regular updates we’re talking every 2 weeks or so which is fine if you’re a techy person that likes seeing loads of new updates it’s just maybe not so good for the more casual user I will say though Hammerhead launched this unit fully baited so this isn’t a wahoo a situation Hammerhead is simply continuing to add stuff to what is already a great unit but apart from a few Gremlins this is a super interesting device to own basically because it keeps getting better like with Wahoo’s Ace choros were slightly silly in launching this Dura before it was really ready but now I have to say it represents a very decent option from a challenger brand the clear standout feature is the claimed battery life and everything around the runtime now carus claims a 120 hour battery life with single band GPS running but and this is a big butt this rather large forehead is a solar panel and choros says that it will give you 2 hours of battery gain for every hour you ride but as you can see the battery claims might not live up to expectations if the conditions are anything other than a hot summer’s day at launch the unit had all sorts of issues with amp plus devices power meters for example weren’t able to communicate properly with the unit so you ended up with big sections of your ride at one wattage which made all of your power data completely useless thankfully this all seems to have been sorted now navigation is good now but you’ll still need the coros app running on your phone and your phone to have a good internet connection to do any re-rooting coros is huge in the sports wearables world and I wouldn’t doubt that they’ll kill it with a V2 but this one isn’t best to avoid those of you who remember Joe knowledge will remember fondly his neck beard and his unfussy nature this is a computer for him and Riders like him who want a Sim Le system to display power speed and not much more that is only sightly true because the rocks will display all manner of data fields which you can customize through the app it’s a super compact unit and easily the lightest on test here at just 55 G and while I wouldn’t say that 170 quid is anywhere near cheap it’s certainly the most affordable of today’s test so if you’re not bothered with what is essentially a smartphone for your bike we give this thing a look so in my opinion The Edge 830 is still the GPS computer to buy in 2025 you just really can’t beat this for Value right now if you want to see Ash’s Take On The Edge 1050 versus the Wahoo Ace why not click on here

I got a Fenix 6x plus, for 220€, two years ago. I use it as my bike computer.
They need to make a updated 130 edge.
Living in Mexico, where the sun shines almost all year round, the Garmin Edge 840 Solar stands out as my top choice for its excellent price-to-quality ratio and remarkable battery endurance.
Time to stop the solar gimmick nonsense and give us edge to edge screens that way we won’t need a unit the size of a mobile phone.
I had been looking forward to the new Wahoo being launched but the size of the Ace is just ridiculous.
I don’t like my 830. Maybe it’s the poor software. Turn by turn routing is sketchy and often loses the course.
Great until the battery dies. No easy way to replace the battery. Planned obsolescence.
Cost like iPhone, works like 20y old samsung.
@bikeradar can you tell me what brand that gold mount you’re using please
I still rock a bolt v1. Why everyone wants a giant smartphone sized computer on their bike, I don't know.
Don't have one. Not sure if I want one but good video for my consideration.
My 1000 is great.
Hammerhead's software is now really good – took them a while for them to get there though. The current gen Karoo 3 is really cheap for what it is but the Karoo 2 is the real value king. The software updates keep coming and you get all the bells and whistles with the android based OS.
IMHO flagship functionality for lower-mid-range price.
magene all the way
Why can’t Garmin make a bike computer just for touring. Smart phones size screen. 100 hrs battery.
All navigation tools. Ect ect . A colour screen that’s easy to read ( a clear arrow on a clear background what a joke ) No bells and whistles like training programs and power tools.
How hard can it be
Edge 1040 + the beta software version gives you almost every thing offered on the 1050 minus the cellphone quality of the screen & a bike bell (seriously, a bike bike)
I would never buy the solar version of the Garmin, and I live in Florida where we get more sunshine than anyone. Do you know what that means? It's HOT! From May till Oct the low is 80 at 6 a.m. Do you really think I'm waiting around for the sun so I can charge my head unit? Not likely. Cyclists in FL are out the door before the sun comes up and we're done before it really has a chance to be high enough in the sky to do any good to solar units. My Edge 540 is a great little unit, and it eats about 10% per hour, so I get about a week of riding out of it before it needs charging. I charge it way before that. And upgrading every few years is easy really, because I simply sell my old unit and buy the new one. Garmins hold their value pretty well, so every few years it only costs me about $100 or less to upgrade. You just have to keep the box and make sure you take care of the computer.
Don't buy the Explore 2. It doesn't have Wifi. So every update will trickle down over bluetooth or needs a wired connection to a desktop computer. WTF, it's 2025.
I think the Edge 830 is a much better choice – you will have to keep your Micro-USB cable around though.
no touchscreen computer can be best, unless you are only a cafe rider in perfect conditions. they arewank
you have a dreadful idea for the Bolt. buttons are key
Garmin Edge 820 with powerbank Rockbros, what else?
Just got a Garmin 840 from Garmin for £265. Bargain that.
Love my little Edge 130 Plus (despite a few annoying bugs)
The UK lack of sunshine shouldn't effect ratings! The 1040 solar battery life is amazing! But yes I live in southern California.
Wahoo Elemnt Bolt V1 is where it is at! Simple screen and easy to see. Wish they'd do an update with some of the features of the new models such as more memory and ability to reroute but keep the other simplicity.
Livetrack never worked for me on the Edge 830 (with android phone), software was useless. Bluetooth connectivity unreliable. However it does work on the Edge 840.
9:11 are you sure you don’t mean 1040, instead of 840? Because I just searched for the 840 and it’s definitely a lot smaller than the comparison at this fragment of the video?
Garmin Edge 1000 here. Got me a 1040 last year, used it for a week and hated everything about it, especially the stupid functions like showing your ride without a map. Back to the edge 1000 which was and still is the real premium gadget from Garmin. Should it ever go haywire I'll leave the Garmin eco-system.
Super happy with my Edge Explore 2.
Relatively inexpensive, comparatively large screen and reliable. Rerouting and potentially routing works offline directly on the device itself. No need for an extra app or even Internet connection when I'm in the middle of nowhere. No offline (Re-)routing is an absolute dealbreaker for me.
I only need it for navigation and a little bit of (route-)tracking. No other fitness features, so this one is perfect for me.
I was considering the cura solar one for near endless battery life, but what's the point of that, if my Smartphone has to do the heavy lifting and I'm reliant on internet connection?
My garmn edge explore 2 is a total pain . Battery life is dreadfull about 5 maybe 6 hours. It changes screens all on it own . last week screen 2 swapped the top with the bottom field without any input from me. Setting up routes is deradfull i had to manage via a thrid party app. Turned off the GPS without any input from me . I am looking to replace it so i can confine the garmin to the same shelf as the watch i was bought as a present which eats batteries.
Still have an Edge 800, and it's still more than good enough.
Is there one that just does GPS offloading from your phone? I don't care about all the other stuff, all I want is a cheap device that lets me see my route so I can keep my phone in my pocket. That with solar charging would be the perfect device for me.
the best navigation is my head, brain and eyes when they look at the signs 😀
Why is everything about road cycling stylish and well designed, except bike computers – especially the user interface? Looks like something from the 1990s.
I want to buy my first ever bike computer would you recommend the Wahoo bolt v2 or the bolt 3 when i compare the looks of the two i think the v2 just looks so much better and the black bar above the buttons of the v3 look terrible. Is the newer one really better?!
Yea i just got a new wahoo roam 2 😂
the garmin Edge 530 was updated to USB-C and also the software was update and can do almost the same as the new ones, just in a smaller display. it is the best of the best deals today.
Lol garmins transitioning to smartphone still happy using my garmin 520 for 10 yrs now 🤣😁
I don't like any of the cycling specific GPS units I prefer the etrex range and the GPSMAP 65s type units.
No live drag data for the Ace is so funny. There is no point in getting it until you can get live drag, or at least post-ride drag data.
In Sweden
Garmin Edge 830 was in 2023 269£ in 2025 it's 504£
Garmin Edge 840 was in 2023 402£ in 2025 it's 346£
I bought the garmin 840 solar for 359£
530 and 840 are nice – but the screens are too small for me to read. 1040 is perfect for my eyes. Just works. YMMV.
Take it you don't rate Bryton computers enough to review them?

Keep touchscreens off the Bolt!
Nice to have the closeup on the right side of the screen but you don't see the 'touch' on the phone when the phone is waving behind all the time. As a training video, almost impossible to follow what you are doing. I'm deaf. This would have been great if you would have just put the phone down on the table where we could see what you are touch/tapping.
so many years later edge 130 still has the most readable screen
Really hoping they release a 550 soon
Magene C606. Combines both worlds (touchscreen & buttons), has everything a cyclist might need, and costs 160 US$ NEW…
Why not just taking 1040 lol it costs the same almost as 840? Is more favorable than 840 if you can add 20$ and get 1040
I'm running out of patience with my Garmin. It's a pretty old model (530), but I guess it runs the same software as the newer models, and it's the software that I can't stand. It's so panicky – starting to scream at me to take a U-turn after losing sattelites for 5 seconds in a tunnel. It is very bad at rerouting. And you can't change things on the fly. Want to switch to an alternative route, or make a detour while following a route – forget it. It may be a proper choice for other use cases, it is not a good computer for touring.
