The Seven Sisters are actually now just five and a half sisters, sitting on Copt Hill near Houghton-le-Spring, but there were once seven beech trees at the top.
The mound which they are sitting on is known as a bowl barrow, which is a type of burial ground, or tumulus. A tumulus is a mound of stones and earth built on top of ancient graves, measuring around 3m high.
The site was first excavated in 1877 by Canon William Greenwell of Durham Cathedral Library (cool job). At this point, it was thought to be a burial ground dating back to the Neolithic period (2400-1500 years
ago).
However, after further excavations in 2003, evidence was unearthed that dated it’s origins to the Mesolithic period (7000 years ago). Due to it’s significant history, the site is now a scheduled monument.

[Music] Do you remember? Um, today we’re going to have a ride to the Seven Sisters by Coptail. Um, it’s probably one of the first rides I did back in the day when I started riding two a year ago. Um, I bought a secondhand bike off Facebook Marketplace and I cycled up there and to be honest, it felt like I’d been in the the tour to France. I was absolutely shattered by the time I got there, but I got there nevertheless. So, we’re going to have a ride up there today and uh we’ll go up the heading line up towards Merton through Cars Farm and uh past the wind farm at Little Edoon and then down past the Horton Golf Course and uh down to Cocktail. So, we’ll get on with it. We’ll see you in a bit. [Music] Do you remember when we were two beautiful birds? We same way in the morning. [Music] You were silver and blue like moon in it was cold as a summer sun. One day was for a different song. One that I just couldn’t sing. I got the melody sharp and it was all wrong. Those were the last days of spring. To build a nest, we pecked feathers from our chest. So, we’re at uh the wind farm. I don’t know. Initially, these went up in the 1990s and I think there was three on the top top of the hill over there. And there was such a novelty at the time. People used to come up and have a look. I think people from my generation, the only time we s seen a windmill was watching Trump with Windy Miller. Do you know who lives here? Yes. Windy Miller. Um the site itself is actually an ancient burial site dating back 7,000 years. Um the last dig was done in 2003 and they found found artifacts dating back to that time. So yeah, it’s pretty old like I say seven sisters. There’s only five now. Um, one’s behind me and I think the other one ran away with a post or something like that. Touch mountain toes, golden sand, seen pyramids and temples made of stone. Keep seashells in a cashmre scarf. A treasure book or photographs in every single one you stand alone. You seen Vienna around the Bing wall. And as you watched the decades fall, the letters that you wrote never made it home. Birthdays flew past like June with Christmas days in hotel rooms and New Year’s Eve with people you don’t know. Build friendships, but they sailed without you. You never meant it. And that’s why they doubt you now. They don’t ever talk about you. And you’re older than you used to be. The mirror weaves a tapestry of lines that dance shimmer around. Finish. Today’s ride off where we started over at Hen Lions Country Park. Not a massive ride today. As I say, it was the first ride I did when I started a ride. And I remember the sense of achievement when I finished that first ride. And I remember the sense of cramp after I’d finished that ride. But it’s been a canny ride out. See, you lucky if I’ve done 10 miles tonight, but just getting out and getting about, it’s good for your mind and soul.
